Qatar MotoGP: 800cc top speed beats 990 best
The 2009 Qatar MotoGP night race saw an 800cc machine exceed the highest top speed of a 990cc bike for the first time during a grand prix weekend at the Losail International Circuit.

Losail hosted its first MotoGP event in 2004, when Max Biaggi's Camel Honda was clocked at 334.4km/h (207/8mph)along the 1.068km main straight.

That record stood unbroken for the remainder of the 990cc era and then the first year of 800cc racing in 2007.

However, Ducati's Marco Melandri was able to exactly match Biaggi's top speed during last year's race - and Dani Pedrosa took his Repsol Honda to a new record of 338.6km/h (210.41mph) in this year's qualifying session (now without qualifying tyres).

Mika Kallio's Pramac Ducati was second in qualifying with 338.0km/h, followed by Ducati Marlboro's Casey Stoner (337.2km/h) and Jorge Lorenzo's Yamaha (337.0km/h). Team-mate Valentino Rossi was ranked fifth with 334.2km/h.

One of the main reasons for reducing engine size, and restricting fuel, had been to try and reduce top speeds.

The Qatar Grand Prix has been held at night for the past two seasons.

Qatar top speed 2004-2009:

2004: Max Biaggi Camel Honda 334.4km/h (990cc)
2005: Carlos Checa Ducati Marlboro 328.7km/h (990cc)
2006: Dani Pedrosa Repsol Honda 330.2km/h (990cc)
2007: Casey Stoner Ducati Marlboro 324.7km/h (800cc)
2008: Marco Melandri Ducati Marlboro 334.4 km/h (800cc)
2009: Dani Pedrosa Repsol Honda 338.6km/h (800cc)

Kvalifikacije Japanese GP

Valentino Rossi will start Sunday's MotoGP race at Motegi from pole position after today's qualifying session was cancelled due to heavy rain.

A torrential downpour shortly after the MotoGP practice on Saturday caused the 125cc and MotoGP qualifying session to be delayed, and the decision to cancel the day's running was taken when the rained did not let up for the rest of the afternoon in Japan.

The grid was decided on the fastest times set by each rider during the weekend's practice sessions, all of which were set on Friday as Saturday's practice session was run in wet conditions.

Rossi earned his 42nd premier class pole position with his last flying lap of Friday's session when he beat Ducati's Casey Stoner's best effort by just 0.056s. Stoner will join Rossi's works Yamaha on the front row, along with the second factory Yamaha of Jorge Lorenzo.

Suzuki and Kawasaki were among those to benefit from the Friday times being counted, with Chris Vermeulen and Loris Capirossi sandwiching Colin Edwards - who was fastest in today's wet practice session - on the second row. Marco Melandri's Hayate Kawasaki was eigth quickest on Friday, so will start in the middle of the third row.

Andrea Dovizioso's late effort on a poor Friday for Honda became more significant as it earned him seventh on the grid, while team-mate Dani Pedrosa will start down in 11th place.

Toni Elias will start ninth on his Gresini Honda, with James Toseland's Tech 3 Yamaha completing the top 10.

GP – HAYDEN INJURED AGAIN

Nicky Hayden, who is still suffering from the dorsal and back injuries sustained by crashing last time in Qatar, receives daily therapy at Clinica Mobile before riding his Ducati.

In today’s MotoGP race, he was involved in a collision with another rider hurting his lower back again. The clinical and instrumental tests performed were negative, so Nicky will be able to race next time in Jerez.

GP –125 RACE, SMITH

In the last few laps of the 125 race today at Motegi, Bradley Smith in an attempt to control his bike, hit his bike’s front with his helmet sustaining neck and chin injuries.

He bravely fought to finish the race and when then treated with Steri Strips instead of traditional suture stitches at Clinica Mobile. He will be able to race at Jerez next weekend

Honda to supply Moto2 engines

By Simon Strang Saturday, May 2nd 2009, 14:39 GMT

Honda will be the single-engine supplier for the new Moto2 category in 2010, which will eventually replace the 250cc class as MotoGP's primary feeder series from 2011.

The FIM announced at the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez that the new bikes will be integrated into the current 250cc championship next year - similar to the way MotoGP bikes were mixed with the 500cc class in 2002 – following a meeting of the Permanent Bureau comprising FIM president Vito Ippilito and Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta.

The Honda engine will be a 600cc, four-stroke unit, and is expected to produce 'over 150bhp' according to the statement.

Though it has not been confirmed, it is considered likely that European-based Honda specialist tuner Ten Kate will be given the contract to prepare the motors for the new open-chassis formula.

Speculation also suggests that the tyre regulations may remain free to allow open competition between manufacturers, with Michelin known to be showing interest in building tyres for the series.

MotoGP practice to be lengthened

By Matt Beer Saturday, May 2nd 2009, 12:43 GMT

MotoGP practice and qualifying sessions are to return to one hour in duration from the next event at Le Mans, the FIM has announced.

As part of the cost-cutting measures introduced for this year, Friday morning practice was cancelled outright, and the other sessions reduced to 45 minutes.

But this proved unpopular with leading riders, who urged the organisers to allow additional mileage.

In a meeting of the Grand Prix commission this morning, the decision was taken to make the remaining two practice sessions plus qualifying one hour long again, although there will remain just one session on Fridays.

While the restoration of what amounts to 45 minutes of practice time will be popular with the riders, they are likely to be disappointed by the continued absence of a Friday morning session.

"For me it's a better idea, even if we went to 45 minutes for four of them instead of three one-hour sessions," said former champion Casey Stoner at Jerez yesterday. "Everyone's here, everyone's ready, and on Friday morning we're all sitting around doing nothing.

"Everyone wants the Friday session back. Everyone's flying in here, we all arrive on the same day, we have the press conference on Thursday and everyone has to be here, but we're only getting on track on Friday afternoon, so it's a waste of time."

Lorenzo: Yamaha first choice for 2010

By Toby Moody Saturday, May 2nd 2009, 17:09 GMT

Jorge Lorenzo and Dani PedrosaMotoGP championship leader Jorge Lorenzo has said that negotiations have already started on his 2010 contract with Yamaha, amid strong suggestions that Repsol has begun moves to get the Spaniard on a works Honda from next season.

Repsol is believed to have approached Lorenzo as a potential replacement for Dani Pedrosa, who has been the Spanish oil giant's MotoGP title hope for three seasons but has yet to deliver a championship.

But Lorenzo said his priority was to remain at Yamaha, and that he was already in talks with the company's racing boss Lin Jarvis.

"I met with Lin Jarvis yesterday," said the Jerez pole-sitter. "I'm in a good place, though. The first idea is for me to continue (with Yamaha)."

Pedrosa declined to comment on his own future, saying only that "there may be other makes" should he ever part company with Honda.

While suggesting he was content to stay at Yamaha, Lorenzo added that he was pleased by the interest in him after his very strong start to 2009.

"When you are fast everyone wants you," he said, "when you are not fast then no one wants you."

Repsol Honda could potentially offer Lorenzo a substantial salary increase in order to entice him away from Yamaha.

Although happy at his current team, Lorenzo would not have undisputed number one status at Yamaha all the time he was riding alongside Valentino Rossi, who is currently signed with the Japanese manufacturer through 2010.

Bautista In Talks With Suzuki For 2010, Simoncelli To Gresini?
Submitted by Kropotkin on Sat, 2009-05-02 22:53.

Regardless of the outcome of this year's 250cc championship, that series' two biggest names will be leaving for greener pastures at the end of the year. Both Alvaro Bautista and Marco Simoncelli intend to step up a class for the 2010 season, though they seem set to go in quite different directions.

The man whose future seems clearest is Alvaro Bautista. For according to the Spanish website Motoworld.es, Bautista is in negotiations to join the Rizla Suzuki team in 2010. Motoworld.es is reporting that representatives for the Spanish 250 star have been talking to Paul Denning about joining Suzuki, as Bautista is determined to sign with a factory team, which leaves Suzuki as the only option. The Hamamatsu factory was given a dispensation from the so-called Rookie Rule which prevents riders eligible for the Rookie Of The Year award from going straight to a factory team, as Suzuki only fields two bikes and does not have a satellite squad which they can use to nurture newcomers to the class.

According to Motoworld.es, Bautista is most likely to be replacing Chris Vermeulen at Suzuki, as the Australian has an offer from another team for next season, though the site does not say which team that might be. Like Bautista, Vermeulen is keen to remain on satellite equipment, and at the moment, there are appear to be very few factory seats open.

Bautista was in talks with Suzuki last year about switching to MotoGP for this season, but the Man From La Mancha (Bautista is from Talavera de la Reina, in Spain's Castilla-La Mancha region) decided to stay on a year in the 250 class after losing the title to Marco Simoncelli. But Bautista is also a protege of Jorge Martinez, boss of the Aspar squad, and Martinez is keen to hang on to the Spaniard. To this end, Martinez is in talks with Yamaha about obtaining satellite M1 machines for the 2010 season, though the success of this approach will depend on whether the proposal to allow riders just one bike at each race actually makes more bikes available than the four that Yamaha currently fields.

As for Marco Simoncelli, it is an open secret that Aprilia want the Italian superstar to ride their RSV4 machine in World Superbikes next season, even offering Simoncelli a wildcard in World Superbikes earlier this year. Aprilia is furious with Dorna and the MSMA with the way decisions were made about the Moto2 class, the Italian factory's plans to field a V Twin thwarted by the class moving to a 600cc four cylinder engine, a configuration Aprilia has neither the experience nor the interest in building.

But Simoncelli is yet to be convinced. The Italian feels he is still young enough to take a chance in the MotoGP class, and Motoworld.es is linking Simoncelli to the Gresini Honda squad. Simoncelli shares his manager with Alex de Angelis, who will no doubt be talking to Fausto Gresini about Simoncelli's future.

It remains to be seen how Simoncelli's close friendship with Valentino Rossi plays out. There is no doubt about Rossi's influence with Yamaha, and the internet is rife with rumors linking Simoncelli with Yamaha, and especially Herve Poncharal's Tech 3 Yamaha squad. So far, these are very much still rumors, and as virtual as the world which spawned them. Silly season has started very early in 2009.

Rossi says Jerez win impossible

By Toby Moody and Jamie O'Leary Saturday, May 2nd 2009, 16:47 GMT

Valentino RossiValentino Rossi does not believe he can win the Spanish Grand Prix after running into problems with his front tyre during qualifying.

The six-time world champion, who lies second in the points, qualified fourth on his Yamaha, but was 0.709 seconds slower than his polesitting team-mate Jorge Lorenzo.

Afterwards, he said that the most he could expect from the race was a podium finish.

"No, it's not possible [to win]," said the 30-year-old Italian. "It's a big difference compared to practice yesterday. I could ride much better then.

"For sure we expected to have a better weekend here than we have done, especially after yesterday, but we had some problems that we didn't expect. Now we just have to make the maximum and try to arrive on the podium in the race."

Rossi, who had set the pace on Friday, said that his main problem was with the spec Bridgestone front tyres introduced this year, which are too soft for his liking.

"It's a big worry for sure," he added. "Last year me and Casey [Stoner] were able to use a different front tyre. Now that tyre is cancelled and we need to adapt our styles and our settings to this tyre, which is much softer.

"For sure my gap to the front guys was bigger with the qualifying tyres than the race tyres, but we have a problem.

"We already have some ideas of what we need to change for tomorrow, some changes in the settings, but it's not sure yet. We need more time to look at the data and decide what to change for the warm-up."
