Bautista To Sign Two-Year Deal With Suzuki On Thursday?
Submitted by David Emmett on Wed, 2009-08-12 17:28.

Although most of the MotoGP world is awaiting the decision of Jorge Lorenzo, currently the largest log jamming up the 2010 rider reshuffle, a smaller block could soon find itself being shifted. The Spanish website Motocuatro is reporting that Alvaro Bautista has signed a two-year deal with Suzuki, and that he will be making an official announcment on Thursday.

According to Motocuatro, the deal will be announced by "a senior figure inside Suzuki" and will also see the announcement of Loris Capirossi's contract extension for 2010. This would see Bautista line up alongside the Italian veteran at Suzuki for next year, with Capirex retiring at the end of the 2010 season.

The impending announcement leaves Jorge Martinez and the Aspar team in something of a quandary, but the team must also carry some of the blame. Bautista signed a pre-contract with Suzuki last summer, when Martinez looked close to a deal with Suzuki to run a team for the 2009 season, a deal which eventually fell through after Suzuki decided against supplying more bikes for the series. This left Bautista already committed to Suzuki for next season, and subject to a penalty if he want to get out of the deal.

The penalty clause is not Bautista's main consideration, however. The Spaniard is known to be keen to join an official factory team, and Aspar's promise of promotion to the Ducati factory team in 2011 was simply not enough to sway Bautista's decision in Aspar's favor. With Suzuki exempt from the rule barring rookies from going straight to a factory team, the Rizla squad was Bautista's only option of a direct factory ride.

With Bautista apparently out of the equation, Jorge Martinez is left to fill the gap at Aspar. The two current favorites are Toni Elias, who will not be staying at Gresini beyond the end of this year, and Hector Barbera, the Spanish rider currently competing against Bautista in the 250cc class. Elias already has experience on the Ducati, the bike which Aspar will be fielding, but Barbera is from the Valencia region of Spain, and as Aspar's sponsors all have strong ties and strong roots in the region, that connection may just tip the decision in his favor.

First, though, Bautista's management are due to meet with the Aspar team at Brno on Thursday. Once that meeting has been held, then official announcements should be made, and another piece or two of the 2010 MotoGP puzzle will have fallen into place.

Hector Barbera Signs Aspar MotoGP Deal For 2010
Submitted by David Emmett on Wed, 2009-08-12 23:56.

Now that the paddock at Brno is starting to fill up with teams and riders, as they prepare for the Czech Grand Prix this weekend, silly season is starting to get back into full swing. Already, news is starting to break of Alvaro Bautista's impending announcement of a deal with Suzuki for the next two years, as team mate to Loris Capirossi for 2010, and that move has precipitated a bit more reshuffling.

For with Bautista now taken, the Aspar team, who will be making their debut with the fifth Ducati fielded this year by Sete Gibernau, have had to turn to their backup plan for a rider. According to Spanish website Motocuatro.com, that backup plan is Hector Barbera. Barbera and his management met Jorge Martinez, boss of the Aspar squad, in the paddock at Brno, and according to Motocuatro, at that meeting Barbera concluded a one-year deal to ride the Aspar team's Ducati in 2010. The deal is due to be announced officially on either Thursday or Friday, as Jorge Martinez had promised he would do to the Spanish press.

Barbera was Aspar's preferred fallback option, for the Aspar MotoGP project is to be funded by the Generalitat Valenciana, the Valencian tourist board. With both Jorge Martinez and Hector Barbera being natives of the region, the project is now a 100% Valencian undertaking, serving the interests of the sponsors down to the ground. Alvaro Bautista, Aspar's initial option, is from Talavera de la Reina, a small town southwest of Madrid, in the Castile-La Mancha region of Spain.

Barbera was known to be talking to other teams, including Tech 3 Yamaha, but the sponsorship deal sits much better with Aspar than elsewhere. If Barbera had also chosen to pass on the option, then Jorge Martinez would have had to turn to Toni Elias, currently with Gresini Honda. Elias rode the Pramac Ducati last year, putting the bike on the podium twice, at Brno and Misano, though he was aided by Michelin's tire woes at Brno, and crashes at Misano.

With Barbera taking the Aspar ride, Elias' options in MotoGP are starting to get very thin indeed. His only real option looks like being a return to Pramac, alongside Mika Kallio. But that decision is likely to wait until after Ducati have decided what to do with their option on Nicky Hayden, which expires at the end of August.

Honda To Pen New Deals With Repsol, Pedrosa And Dovizioso At Brno
Submitted by David Emmett on Thu, 2009-08-13 14:46.

Now that the MotoGP paddock is assembling once again at Brno for the Czech Grand Prix, some movement is starting to return to the rider market. We reported yesterday that both Alvaro Bautista and Hector Barbera are likely to announce the deals they have penned, with Suzuki and Aspar Ducati respectively, but today, news of much bigger fish has started to emerge.

The website of the Spanish magazine Solo Moto is reporting that Repsol and Honda will be finalizing renewal of their sponsorship contract this weekend. HRC president Tetsuo Suzuki is said to be on his way to Brno to put his signature to the deal, which Solo Moto's Manuel Pecino believes will be a two-year extension of their current contract. The Spanish petroleum giant has been working with the factory Honda squad since 1995, and are so closely associated that they have become almost synonymous.

The deal would put an end to much speculation. Earlier in the year, Repsol was rumored to be looking to take its sponsorship elsewhere, after Honda failed to deliver an instantly quick bike for the third year in a row. Repsol really wants a Spanish world champion, but since the switch to 800cc, Honda have struggled to deliver. The last few races have shown a marked improvement, however, and Repsol and Honda have been getting closer to a contract extension for the past couple of months, to be concluded at Brno.

The renewal with Repsol is likely to be just part of the deal to be announced here this weekend. Solo Moto is also reporting that new deals will also be inked with Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso, the Repsol Honda team remaining unchanged for next season. Dovizioso's renewal is in part a reward for the debut win the Italian took the last time out, while Pedrosa's contract was made possible by the news that Jorge Lorenzo's first priority is to remain with Yamaha.

Once Pedrosa and Dovizioso have been signed, then an announcement by Lorenzo will surely not be far behind. Once both Repsol seats are filled, Lorenzo's options with Honda will quickly run out, leaving the Spaniard with few options other than to re-sign with Yamaha. The irony of Pedrosa and Dovizioso announcing their contract renewal before Lorenzo would not be lost on the paddock, as it would see the man who has held up the rider merry-go-round for so long with his dalliances with Honda and Yamaha forced into a decision not of his own making.

Honda keeps Dani Pedrosa, Andrea Dovizioso
HRC president Tetsuo Suzuki has announced that both Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso will remain at the factory Honda MotoGP team for the next two seasons.

Pedrosa has been a Honda rider for his entire grand prix career, which began in the 125cc class in 2001. The Spaniard won the 125cc world championship in 2003 and then the 250cc crown in 2004 and 2005.

Graduating to MotoGP with factory Repsol Honda in 2006, Pedrosa was a race winner in his first premier-class season and, until Dovizioso's victory in the recent British Grand Prix, was the only Honda rider to win races in the 800cc era, which began in 2007.

Pedrosa, who has battled frequent injuries in recent years, was second in the 2007 MotoGP World Championship and is presently fourth in the 2009 standings after ten of 17 rounds. Pedrosa has won seven MotoGP races.

Dovizioso has been a Honda rider since his first full 125cc season in 2002 and won the 2004 world championship before spending three seasons in the 250cc class. Dovi finished twice runner-up to Aprilia's Jorge Lorenzo before joining the Spaniard in moving to MotoGP in 2008.

Fifth in the championship with one podium also made Dovizioso the top satellite rider and he was promoted to the factory team for 2009. Dovizioso currently sits sixth in the championship with his Donington win also marking his first podium of the year.

The news of an unchanged factory Honda line-up for 2010 means that Jorge Lorenzo is almost certain to remain at Fiat Yamaha - and that Yamaha's bargaining power has now increased significantly.

Had Lorenzo switched to Honda, arch rival Pedrosa was expected to move in the opposite direction and partner reigning six time MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi.

The news that Pedrosa and Dovizioso are staying put means that five 2010 seats are now confirmed, the three others being Rossi (Fiat Yamaha), Casey Stoner (Ducati Marlboro) and Marco Simoncelli (Gresini Honda),

Melandri to return to Gresini for 2010

Saturday, 15 August 2009
Fausto Gresini has announced that he has signed Marco Melandri to ride for his team, alongside fellow Italian Marco Simoncelli, next season.

Italian MotoGP star Marco Melandri is returning to the Honda Gresini with whom rode for three years, from 2005 to ‘07, following an announcement made by Fausto Gresini in Brno on Saturday.

The 27 year-old rider was the MotoGP World Championship runner-up with Gresini in 2005, winning five races for the team and finishing on the podium 17 times over those aforementioned three seasons. After spending year with Ducati in 2008, Melandri has ridden very well with limited resources for Hayate this year and has impressed Gresini enough to bring him back into the satellite Honda squad.

“It gives us great pride and satisfaction to have Marco Melandri back with us,” said the San Carlo Honda Gresini boss. “I have always had great belief in his potential and to get our sporting and technical project with him back on track following his experiences with other teams creates fresh and important motivation. Melandri is a huge part of the Honda Gresini story. We have had great results together that over time consolidated a relationship founded on mutual respect and friendship.”

Gresini continued, “With Simoncelli and Melandri together in the premier class and San Carlo as main sponsor we have a true Italian flavour to the team. The choice we have made means that we will not be extending our relationship with Toni Elias or Alex de Angelis, but after a start to the season that certainly wasn't easy, thanks to a lot effort from everybody involved we are starting to pick up some good results so I hope we can keep it up until the end of the season and help them find a good ride in MotoGP.”

Pasini to test with Pramac Racing on Monday

Friday, 14 August 2009
Monday’s post-GP Brno test will see Italian 250cc rider Mattia Pasini make his debut on the Pramac Racing Ducati Desmosedici GP9 Sat.

Mattia Pasini is set to get his hands on a MotoGP bike on Monday, following an announcement that Pramac Racing will allow him to test a Desmosedici GP9.

Pasini will use a bike left available by Mika Kallio who has temporarily joined the Ducati Marlboro team for three races and will also test with the factory squad in Casey Stoner’s absence on Monday in the Czech Republic.

Pramac Racing Team Principal Paolo Campinoti explains, “This idea has come together with Ducati after it became clear that Mika’s bike would have remained without a rider in the box. Mattia has demonstrated during this season that he deserves this opportunity and for these reasons we’re happy and proud to have him with us, even if for only one day.”

Pasini himself stated, “I want to thank Ducati, Pramac Racing and Paolo Campinoti who are giving me this magnificent opportunity to try their bike in Brno on Monday. It will be an important test for me as I will have the possibility to understand if I will be able to ride a MotoGP bike. I have always liked difficult challenges and I am ready also for this one."

HRC Wants Pedrosa, But Not Puig - Updated
Submitted by David Emmett on Sat, 2009-08-15 15:48.

Normally, the arrival of the senior figure from a manufacturer's racing organization at a race track means that a number of questions which linger of the future of a team are about to be cleared up. Such was the expectation when HRC President Tetsuo Suzuki turned up at Brno, the assembled journalists assuming they would hear that contracts had been signed and a lot of loose ends tidied up. That, at least, was what paddock scuttlebutt indicated prior to Suzuki's arrival.

At the press conference given by the HRC boss on Friday morning, that was more or less what was presented, but after the press had interpreted Suzuki-san's pronouncements to mean that contracts had been signed with both Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso, HRC issued a press release pointing out that the phrase used was in fact "basic agreement," by which they meant that agreement had been reached in broad terms, but that there were still a few details to be cleared up before contracts could be officially signed.

This was perhaps the first sign that not everything was as it seemed. Spanish TV, mischievous as they can occasionally be, immediately headed over to Dani Pedrosa's manager Alberto Puig to enquire about Pedrosa's new contract. Puig immediately denied that any contracts were signed, but told TVE that they were indeed close to a deal, with only a few details to be ironed out.

One of those details, it would appear, is the role of Puig himself. A story has appeared in the Catalonian paper El Periodico which suggests that a power struggle has broken out in the Repsol Honda garage, between HRC on the one hand and Alberto Puig and Dani Pedrosa on the other. HRC does not want to sign a contract with Pedrosa which includes a clause which would see Puig in an official Repsol Honda uniform, as is now the case. The tension which Puig has created in the Repsol Honda garage, along with the many management changes he has demanded - without producing any success on the track - leaves HRC feeling the team would run more efficiently without Puig in the Repsol Honda garage. Pedrosa, on the other hand, is unlikely to sign a contract with Honda which does not include a role for his manager and mentor Puig, as Puig provides him with valuable assistance in setting up the Honda and even sitting in with him on meetings with Japanese engineers where the development of the bike is discussed.

However much HRC may want to be rid of Puig, it is not that simple. Puig plays an important role inside Dorna, and is closely involved in the various rider development programs, such as the Red Bull Rookies and the Grand Prix Academy. If the story, as reported by GPOne.com, has any truth to it, the battle of wills could turn into a very complex and drawn out affair.

Official: Bautista to MotoGP with Suzuki
Suzuki has officially confirmed that, as rumoured, it has signed Alvaro Bautista to race in MotoGP for the next two seasons.

Bautista, currently fighting for the final 250cc title before the support class changes to Moto2, had been offered the chance to graduate with his present Aspar team - which will field a one-rider Ducati entry in MotoGP next year - but has chosen a full factory GSV-R instead.

Suzuki is the only team which is able to sign rookie riders, since it does not have a satellite outfit, but the team has taken only one race win since the start of the four-stroke era in 2002.

Bautista, the 2006 125cc world champion, has won eight 250cc grands prix since stepping up to the quarter-litre class in 2007. The Spaniard is presently just 12 points behind title leader Hiroshi Aoyama with six rounds to go.

The #19 is expected to partner MotoGP veteran Loris Capirossi at Suzuki next season, meaning no seat for Chris Vermeulen - the only rider to win a race on the GSV-R.

Bautista's deal means he joins Valentino Rossi (Fiat Yamaha), Casey Stoner (Ducati Marlboro), Marco Simoncelli (Gresini Honda) and Marco Melandri (Gresini Honda) on the 2010 MotoGP grid.

Honda claims it has reached a 'basic agreement' to keep Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso at its factory team for the next two seasons, but contracts have not yet been signed.

Aspar meanwhile now looks set to sign another Spanish 250cc star, Hector Barbera, for its MotoGP project.

2009 Brno Post-Race Test: Rain Stops Proceedings Early - Updated
Submitted by David Emmett on Mon, 2009-08-17 18:13.

The rain brought proceedings to an early end at the final day of testing for the MotoGP class for this season. It started to rain shortly after lunchtime, and though it rained only briefly, by the time the track had started to dry out a fresh shower arrived to drench the track again. Only in the final hour did the riders venture back out onto the track again, and then, it was only Valentino Rossi who managed to improve his time.

So the riders did not get the testing done that they had hoped for. Jorge Lorenzo was once again the fastest rider on the track, ahead of the ever tardy Valentino Rossi, who did not roll out of the garage until after 11am, and Dani Pedrosa. The Repsol Honda riders were due to test Ohlins suspension, but as Dovizioso was scheduled to run the Swedish suspension in the morning, and Dani Pedrosa only in the afternoon, Dovi did the bulk of the testing. Pedrosa did get out on the new forks, according to GPOne.com, but certainly wouldn't have given the new suspension the kind of workout he would have hoped for.

Julian Ryder, over at Superbikeplanet.com, reports that there was cloak-and-dagger atmosphere inside the Suzuki pits, where screens were being erected around bikes every time the fairings came off. Obviously, the factory brought more than just the minor tweaks that they gave to Loris Capirossi for the race on Sunday.

The first outing for a Moto2 bike at an official MotoGP event was not a roaring success. Spanish rider David de Gea crashed during the morning while testing tires for Dunlop, and was transported to a local hospital with a broken foot. De Gea was not the only faller. Both Gabor Talmacsi and Nicky Hayden hit the gravel, though neither man was seriously hurt.
