The Volkswagen ID R wants to set a Nürburgring record

VW’s 670bhp electric racer wants the NIO EP9's scalp. This year, too

Well, why not, right? Volkswagen, having already broken the Pikes Peak record, now wants another one: it wants to become the fastest EV at the Nürburgring.

And it wants to become the fastest EV at the Nürburgring soon – we’re told the attempt will take place at some point in the summer of this year, 2019. “A lap record on the Nordschleife is a great accolade for any car, whether a race car or a production car,” explains VW motorsports boss Sven Smeets.

The team is gunning for Peter Dumbreck’s 2017 record-setting EV run, when he took the NIO EP9 and managed 6m 45.9s.

There’ll be a fair few changes made to the aero of the mad VW ID R over the version that ran at Pikes Peak. Largely because Pikes Peak starts at 2,862m above sea level and finishes at 4,302m. The ‘Ring? Between 320m and 617m above sea level.

What won’t change is that drivetrain. There are still a pair of electric motors – one on each axle – developing a total of 670bhp and 479lb ft of torque. It’s capable of pulling between four and five G under braking. It harvests a significant amount of energy.

And – as we found out upon attempting to drive the thing quickly – is quite an effective sleep aid. Well, if a G force-indcued loss of consciousness counts as sleep, anyhow.

Step forward  the person tasked with running it through one of the world’s toughest circuits: Romain Dumas. He set the Pikes Peak record, and has a string of Nürburgring 24-hour victories to his name, along with Le Mans pedigree too. He’s pretty pumped.

“The thought of driving the ID R on the Nordschleife is already enough to give me goosebumps,” he says. Goosebumps isn’t what we’d be thinking of, if we’re honest.

“I know the track very well, but the ID R will be a completely different challenge, with its extreme acceleration and huge cornering speeds,” he adds. “Breaking the existing electric record will certainly not be a stroll in the park.”

Watch this space…

‘One-trick pony’ Vettel is ‘massively overrated’ – Irvine

Former Ferrari driver Eddie Irvine believes Sebastian Vettel is “massively overrated” and that none of the current Formula 1 drivers come close to the talent of Michael Schumacher.

Irvine won four races for Ferrari during a four-year spell with the team which included finishing runner-up in the drivers’ championship in 1999; a year when Schumacher missed seven races with a broken leg. Irvine rates the German as the best F1 has ever seen, and is critical of Ferrari’s current star driver after seeing Lewis Hamilton dominate in recent years.

“I think Lewis is in a different league from all of them,” Irvine told the BBC. “He’s not in Michael’s league and I don’t even think he is close, although he’s racking up lots of wins. He’s got the best car, there are more races and the competition is debatable.

“I think Vettel is good if he is at the front and doesn’t have anybody to race. When you watch Lewis race, he’s focused on racing, and Lewis is really focused on getting ahead of the other guy.

“Vettel, when he is racing is someone, is focused as much on the other guy as he is on where he is going and inevitably crashes into the other guy, which happens nearly all the time.

“I think Vettel is a good driver, but as a four-times world champion, I just don’t see it. I think he is massively overrated, he’s a one-trick pony and Lewis has a much broader talent.”

However, Irvine believes Hamilton – who has won the four of the past five drivers’ championships – lacks the consistency of Schumacher to be considered on a similar level, despite closing in on the seven-time world champion’s records.

“Michael was on it every day, like [Ayrton] Senna, but Lewis has his off days. If you look over the two years Lewis and [Jenson] Button were together, Button actually outscored him over two years. No-one ever did that to Michael, his level of performance was consistently higher.

“Lewis is an amazingly talented driver. When he first came to Formula 1 he was fantastic to watch, and his overtaking was second to none. He’s probably a better overtaker than Michael was. But for pace, and consistency over a whole weekend, over a whole year, I don’t think anyone touches Michael – even Senna.”

I win a 24h race.. In 23h 50'
