Monger beats minimum cockpit exit time, eyes FIA F3 move

By: RACER Staff | 4 hours ago

British driver Billy Monger, who lost both legs following a racing crash in 2017, made another move toward advancing his career by demonstrating the ability to extract himself from a Halo-equipped Formula 2 car.

Monger has driven in British F3 this year for Carlin Racing, taking multiple pole positions and finishing sixth in points. Although he indicated in September he might opt to switch to North American racing and the Road to Indy for next year, the 19-year-old appears to see F3 as his preferred option, if the necessary funding can be secured.

In the video he shared on social media, Monger exits the Carlin F2 car in under three seconds. FIA regulations dictate that all drivers must demonstrate the ability to get out of their cars in under eight seconds.

The new FIA F3 series, which introduced its new spec chassis at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, is set to replace GP3 as the undercard on F1 weekends next year.

Richard Philippe, who competed in Indy Lights in 2009, was among five people killed in a helicopter crash in the Dominican Republic last week. He was 28.

Philippe, who won the 2005 Formula BMW USA championship, raced against current Verizon IndyCar Series drivers Simon Pagenaud, Graham Rahal and James Hinchcliffe in Champ Car’s Atlantic Series in 2006.

After racing in Formula Renault 3.5 and Formula 3 Euro in Europe in 2007-08, Philippe joined Indy Lights in 2009. He finished 13th in the standings despite missing four races, with best showings of second place at Long Beach and Edmonton.

Bloodhound supersonic car for sale after project halted

ssc3.jpg

By: RACER Staff | December 8, 2018 3:32 PM

Project Bloodhound’s mostly finished supersonic vehicle — built with a jet engine bolted to a rocket in an attempt to break the world land speed record — is up for sale after attempts to find financing for the project failed. And the car itself is available for the cost of only around $318,000.

Bloodhound Programme Ltd, the company behind the initiative to break the land speed record, entered into administration in October to try and save the project, meant to “hit speeds of 1000mph at a specially built, 18km long, 1500m wide racetrack at Hakskeen Pan in the deserts of the Northern Cape of South Africa,” as well as serve as a focal point for STEM education in the United Kingdom, the project’s website states.

Planned test runs above 500mph were supposed to take place in late 2018 before trying to break the world land speed record in late 2019. The team tried to find around $33 million in funding to complete the project.

“You’re going to need to find a few million to get it running to full speed,” driver Andy Green told the BBC. “We have basically completed the main structure, the desert is ready; we just need the funding.”

Project Bloodhound was founded in 2007 and has operated on a private partnership and sponsorship model, with support from a variety of partners including Rolls Royce and Rolex. The UK Ministry of Defence lent prototype jet engines for the car, and the Northern Cape Provincial Government in South Africa supported the creation of the Hakskeen Pan track. Individual donations from members of the public have also supported the development of the car and the global education program.

Up to this point, the car has been tested to speeds up to 200mph, but the project team said the test also helped to develop and test propulsion, aerodynamic and telecommunications technologies with the potential for applications outside of the project.

“Since [entering administration in October] we have worked tirelessly with the directors to identify a suitable individual or organization who could take the project forward,” joint administrator Andrew Sheridan told the BBC.

“Despite overwhelming public support, and engagement with a wide range of potential and credible investors, it has not been possible to secure a purchaser for the business and assets.

“We will now work with key stakeholders to return the third-party equipment and then sell the remaining assets of the company to maximize the return for creditors.”

Svaka cast mali! :hail:

British racing driver Billy Monger has been honoured with the Helen Rollason Award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year show.

Monger, 19, had both his legs amputated following a crash during a Formula 4 race at Donington Park in April 2017.

He returned to racing in March 2018 - less than a year after the accident - at the British Formula 3 Championship.

'Billy Whizz' then claimed his maiden British F3 pole position on his return to Donington Park in September.

He was presented with his award by his hero, five-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, surrounded by his family, team and the Donington Park marshals, doctors and nurses who helped to save his life.

The Helen Rollason award recognises outstanding achievement in the face of adversity and was introduced to the show in 1999 in memory of BBC Sport journalist and presenter Helen Rollason MBE, who lost her battle with cancer during that year at the age of 43.

Previous winners of the award include Hillsborough disaster campaigner Anne Williams, charity marathon runner Ben Smith and last year's winner Bradley Lowery, whose parents accepted the award posthumously.

Bloodhound SSC's 1000mph mission may have been saved
The land speed record may yet be broken, as a buyer steps in for Bloodhound
Stephen Dobie
17 Dec 2018

On December 7, it was announced that the struggling Bloodhound SSC project had failed to find a new buyer, and would therefore come to a halt. Little over a week later, it may just have been saved.

“Following this announcement,” reads a statement, “the Joint Administrators were contacted by a number of other interested parties and a purchaser for the business and assets has now been secured, which will allow the project to continue. The business and assets are being bought for an undisclosed amount by Yorkshire-based entrepreneur Ian Warhurst.

“Ian has a strong background in managing highly successful businesses in the automotive engineering sector and he will bring considerable expertise to bear in taking the project forward. He will be outlining his plans for the project in detail early in the New Year.”

Further details are scant, but any positive step is welcome when it looked like Bloodhound – and its 1,000mph land speed record target – was on the ropes. We’ll keep you posted…

Niki Lauda has now returned home after a long period in hospital and rehabilitation.

That is the news from Dr Helmut Marko, who is F1 legend Lauda's Austrian countryman and friend.

69-year-old Lauda, the Mercedes team chairman, underwent a lung transplant in early August and missed the rest of the 2018 season.

But Red Bull official Marko says Lauda's recovery is going "very well".

"After five months, Niki has finally left the hospital and rehabilitation clinic and is back home," he told Servus TV.

"All his organs are working, now it's time to regain his strength. I am optimistic we will see him back in Australia next March."
