Four weeks before Pedrosa can bend leg
Dani Pedrosa is facing a race against time to be fit for the Qatar MotoGP season opener on April 12, after doctors stated that it will be a minimum of four weeks before he can bend his leg following Wednesday's skin graft surgery.

The Spaniard sustained a fractured left forearm and reopened a left knee wound when he was thrown from his Repsol Honda during Monday night at the Qatar test and was then hit by his RC212V. Pedrosa's knee was still recovering from surgery in December, to help heal damage sustained on lap one of last October's Australian Grand Prix.

After receiving treatment in Qatar, including three stitches in his knee, Pedrosa returned to Spain for detailed examinations of his injuries, which confirmed that the six-time MotoGP race winner had suffered 'a loss of internal matter on his left knee' and 'a fractured left distal radius affecting the wrist joint on his left arm'.

The former 125 and double 250cc world champion returned to Barcelona's USP Institut Universitari Dexeus for surgery at 7.30pm on Wednesday. Pedrosa was operated on by Dr Bartolomé Ferreira, specialist in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and Dr. Xavier Mir, Head of the Hand Surgery Microsurgery Unit.

The two doctors carried out the three-hour operation at the same time, with the left knee skin graft the most lengthy.

Afterwards, the doctors spoke about each procedure and the likely recovery time.

“Dani Pedrosa received a graft on the open [knee] wound using a rotation graft - a graft of skin and fat taken from the inside of his left thigh - to cover the affected area,” stated Dr. Ferreira. “We must now wait for scar tissue to form; the patient will be able to start moving a little within three weeks and within a minimum of four he can begin to bend the leg.”

Dr. Mir believes that the forearm fracture should heal more quickly: “The fracture on the left distal radius, which was affecting the joint, has been repaired, it was then fixed with a titanium screw. The functioning of the affected zone will begin within ten days, in the meantime Dani Pedrosa will stay in hospital for the next 72 hours.”

The timeframe given for the knee recovery means Pedrosa is almost certain to miss the final pre-season test session, at Jerez from March 28-29 - just over three weeks - and the 23-year-old will then have only two more weeks of recovery time before the racing season begins at Qatar from April 10-12.

Pedrosa also began the 2008 MotoGP season injured after fracturing his hand during testing at Sepang, but went on to win two races and was leading the world championship when he fell from the lead of the wet German Grand Prix in mid-July.

Hand and ankle injuries from that accident contributed to Pedrosa eventually finishing third in the 2008 title chase.

John Hopkins tells fans to expect 'big treat'
John Hopkins has given his first public comments following Kawasaki's January withdraw from MotoGP.

Hopper should have been starting his second MotoGP season with Team Green in 2009, alongside new team-mate Marco Melandri, but has been left in a precarious position by Kawasaki's change of plans.

Whilst Melandri was subsequently named as the sole rider for the new, unofficial, Hayate Racing Team entry - which Kawasaki has been persuaded to support - the #21's future remains unknown.

However, writing on his official website, the 25-year-old explained his silence and told fans to expect a “big treat” when he does reveal his plans.

“I have been under STRICT instruction from my management not to comment on anything or talk of any plans from here… but I will give you my word right here and now I promise you all, as payback for your support, as soon as i get the go ahead on what I can do and say this page will have the first press release from myself!

“It seems that anything I say can be twisted or manipulated in the media, so I am choosing to not say much to avoid any confliction or drama. I appreciate all of you that support me, you are true die hards and that's awesome. All I will say is, you are all in for big treat!”

Hopkins, who made his MotoGP debut with Red Bull Yamaha in 2002, rode for Suzuki from 2003-2007 - culminating in his first four podiums and fourth overall in the 2007 MotoGP World Championship.

Hopper then moved to Kawasaki, where a disappointing, injury-interrupted season resulted in a best race finish of fifth and just 16th place in the final 2008 standings.

Hopkins joins WSBK with Stiggy Honda
MotoGP exile John Hopkins has confirmed he will join the World Superbike Championship with the Stiggy Honda team from Valencia onwards.

Hopkins has been heavily linked with Johan Stigefelt's team in recent weeks, but only now, having seen his last chance of reunification with Kawasaki come to nothing, has a deal been signed.

Although it isn't currently clear whether Hopkins will ride a third Honda CBR1000RR or replace one of Stiggy's existing riders, the American revealed that he will be on the grid with the team from the third round of the championship at Valencia, Spain.

Thanking Kawasaki for allowing him to pursue other projects, Hopkins, who follows in the footsteps of Max Biaggi, Makoto Tamada and Shinya Nakano, is excited by the challenges that face him.

“Kawasaki and I worked it out where both parties left the relationship happy, and I am thankful to Kawasaki for letting me ride their bikes and race in their program,” Hopkins, who will bring valuable Monster backing with him, said. “I'm excited about racing in the 2009 season and solely putting my focus on moving forward.”

Hopkins had been tipped to make a World Superbike move from the moment Kawasaki confirmed it was withdrawing from MotoGP for financial reasons back in January.

However, while Hopkins was in line to replace the then-injured Roberto Rolfo at the start of the season, the prospect of a revived deal with Kawasaki – under the Hayate banner - is thought to have stalled negotiations. Only when it was apparent that Hayate would be built around Marco Melandri, did Hopkins reignite his Superbike plans.

Joining Ben Spies in increasing America's prominent involvement in the series, his arrival will be seen as another huge boost for the rapidly ascending production series.

Although he joins a privateer Honda team, Stiggy have already shown they are capable of good results in 2009 having helped Leon Haslam to a podium in their first meeting at Phillip Island.

LCR Honda confirms Playboy deal
The LCR Honda team has announced that Playboy will be its title sponsor at select events during the 2009 MotoGP season.

Lucio Cecchinello's satellite squad, which will field Randy de Puniet for a second season in 2009, has a history of punching above its weight in terms of attracting sponsors - but the Playboy deal is by far the most significant in the team's short MotoGP history.

The initial agreement with the Italian arm of the Playboy empire will see the bunny logo and branding present as title sponsor on LCR's RC212V during this weekend's Jerez test and then rounds two and three of the world championship, at Motegi (Japan) and back at Jerez (Spain). Playboy will not to be present at the Qatar season-opener on April 12.

After round three, Cecchinello hopes to secure further title sponsorship on a race-by-race basis.

“We have been in touch with Playboy US for a long time and, taking advantage of the opportunity given by the presence of some American top executives part of Hugh Hefner entourage during his latest visit to Europe, we have defined the guidelines of a project allowing us to start negotiations with some of this evergreen brand's global licensees,” said Cecchinello.

“Playboy Italy has positively assessed the project and confirmed the sponsorship for the early stage of the season (MotoGP Championship Launch during the tests in Jerez de la Frontera, GP in Japan and Spain as Title Sponsor, GP in Qatar... unfortunately, we all know the kind of problems for that) linking it to their activities in the view of relaunching the magazine in Italy.

“Currently, there are further ongoing negotiations with licensees in more countries, who have been presented with our 'projects by event' concept, which does not imply any millionaire investments”.

“We are really pleased to have signed this sponsorship agreement”, added Alessandro Ferri, director of Playboy Italia. “The women-motors pair has always been a winning pair for our readership and we are glad to offer it to our readers together with LCR Honda Team”.

LCR Honda entered the MotoGP class with Casey Stoner in 2006, when the future (Ducati) world champion claimed the team's first pole and podium on his way to eighth in the standings.

Carlos Checa finished 14th overall for LCR in 2007, with de Puniet - whose race results were far lower than his practice and qualifying performances - just 15th in 2008.

2009/2010 MotoGP rule changes defined
On Saturday at Jerez, the FIM and Dorna gave a further update on the MotoGP rule changes, aimed at cutting costs during the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

In mid-February, in response to the withdraw of Kawasaki and growing pressure on the remaining MotoGP manufacturers to reduce costs, the Grand Prix Commission announced six immediate rule changes for the 2009 season.

Those changes, which were aimed at lowering maintenance and running costs, consisted of: The removal of Friday morning practice whilst reducing the three remaining sessions from one hour to 45 minutes; a maximum of 5 engines for the final 8 races; banning of ceramic composite brakes; banning of launch control; banning of electronic suspension and only two post-race tests during the season.

Further rule changes were then to be discussed for the 2010 season.

Those 2010 rule changes - plus an update on the 2009 restrictions - were duly announced by FIM president Vito Ippolito during a press conference at the final MotoGP pre-season test:

“The first change is about the use of the engines, as you know,” said Ippolito. “Now a rider can use five engines for the final seven races [after the cancellation of Hungary], from Brno to Valencia of this year. A rider can then use six engines for the whole of next year, 2010.

“The teams and manufacturers also agreed to reduce the tests. This year and next year we will have only eight days of testing.

“For the next season, 2010, we have also some important changes. The first of them is that we will have only one machine [per rider, meaning no spare bike] during each MotoGP event, from two machines that are allowed now.*

“For next year we will also change some regulations for entry into the MotoGP class; new riders will not be allowed to participate in a factory team. The new riders from 250cc class or Moto2 or any other championship arriving to MotoGP will be allowed to participate only in private or satellite teams.

“In Moto2, there is a proposal coming from the manufacturers to have one make engine regulation. That means that we will have [only] one engine brand in Moto2 class.”

The penalty for breaking the MotoGP engine change rule will be a loss of 10 points for both the rider and manufacturer.

MotoGP rookies banned from factory teams
MotoGP rookies will be banned from riding for a factory team, as part of new rule changes to be introduced for the 2010 season (see separate story).

On Saturday at Jerez Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpetela and FIM president Vito Ippolito revealed that, among the regulation amendments for next season, will be a rule forcing all rookies to spend at least one season in a satellite team.

“For next year we will also change some regulations for entry into the MotoGP class; new riders will not be allowed to participate in a factory team,” said Ippolito. “The new riders from 250cc class or Moto2 or any other championship arriving to MotoGP will be allowed to participate only in private or satellite teams.”

The rule is intended to help support the satellite outfits and will provide manufacturers with further incentive to back at least one independent team in addition to their official outfit.

However, it is bad news for the likes of rising superstars such as Ben Spies (WSBK), Marco Simoncelli (250GP) and Alvaro Bautista (250GP), tipped to join MotoGP next season and naturally aiming to secure the most competitive rides possible.

Nevertheless, it will still be possible for rookies to receive the latest factory machinery and factory support - within a satellite team.

Rookies that have recently entered MotoGP with factory teams include Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha), Randy de Puniet (Kawasaki), Dani Pedrosa (Honda), Nicky Hayden (Honda) and Marco Melandri (Yamaha).

Valentino Rossi made his premier-class debut as a factory Honda rider in 2000, but raced for a one-man Nastro Azzurro Honda team, rather than the official Repsol Honda outfit.

Chris Vermeulen's first full MotoGP season was as a factory Suzuki rider, while Spies made his MotoGP debut as a wild-card for the factory Suzuki squad.

It is not clear if the new rule will also apply to wild-card or replacement riders.

James Toseland suffers huge crash at Jerez
Sunday's 45-minute 'qualifying' session at Jerez has been red-flagged after James Toseland's suffered a huge highside with 16 minutes to go.

The Englishman, who has been fighting to make up for lost track time after suffering the 'biggest accident of his career' during the first day of 2009 testing at Sepang in February, suffered a fall of similar magnitude at Jerez.

The double World Superbike champion lost the rear of his M1 on the exit of a high-speed left hander, and was then thrown high in the air when the rear-rubber gripped.

After a hard hit to his upper body, Toseland was sent tumbling roughly through the gravel before coming to rest with parts of his broken Monster Tech 3 Yamaha lying around him.

Toseland was later placed carefully on a stretcher by marshals and carried away from the track.

Ducati's Casey Stoner has dominated the session so far, but with Valentino Rossi closing to within a few tenths.

UPDATE: Initial medical reports state that Toseland is 'ok'.
