Hungarian Moto GP likely cancelled

BUDAPEST (AFP) — The Hungarian leg of the MotoGP looks set to be cancelled due to delays in construction of the new circuit, the minister for local government, Istvan Gyenesei, said Tuesday.

Spanish group Sedesa, which is building the 80-million-euro (103-million-dollar) track, had failed to begin its part of the construction work on time, the minister said.

"So, it's very likely that the circuit won't be ready and the race won't be able to go ahead. But we've had no official word from the Spanish side," Gyenesei said.

He insisted that the Hungarian side had done all the necessary ground work for construction to begin this month.

Hungary had announced last July that it planned to build a motorcycling circuit to host MotoGP competitions from 2009 onwards, with the 2009 leg scheduled for September 20.

It was to replace the Shanghai MotoGP in China.

The 4,650-metre (2.8-mile) long Balatonring is located near Savoly, 180 kilometres from Budapest near the Lake Balaton holiday area.

The management company overseeing it is Balatonring Zrt, 30 percent of which is controlled by the Hungarian Tourism board and the remaining 70 percent by Spain's Worldwide Circuit Management S.L. (WCM).

Motorsport has become increasingly popular in Hungary, with home talent Gabor Talmacsi winning the 2007 MotoGP 125cc world championship.

Melandri Agrees To Ride "Dornasaki"?
by dean adams
Tuesday, February 10, 2009

Sources in Europe this afternoon confirm that Italian Marco Melandri has agreed to ride the ex-Kawasaki MotoGP bikes this season. Insiders suggest that Dorna will run the team independently and the bikes will be not be branded with the Kawasaki logo.

Dorna is attempting to acquire the Kawasaki machines and run them through a self-sponsored effort in 2009.

Melandri to race at Losail… in Speedcar
Wednesday, 11 February 2009
Italian keeps busy with participation in four-wheel Qatari night race.

A man currently in professional limbo, former MotoGP World Championship runner-up Marco Melandri has guaranteed that his latest on-track participation will come in an evening race at the Losail Circuit in Qatar. However, rather than the MotoGP season-opening Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar, the Italian’s appearance will be part of the 2009 Speedcar Series on February 12th-14th.

Melandri will form part of the Team Lavaggi squad for his first car race since 2006, accompanying erstwhile Formula 1 star Heinz Harald Frentzen. The two will compete against each other and a further twelve drivers in the Speedcar Series’ first ever night event.

Household names taking to the track this week will be ex-Formula 1 drivers Jacques Villeneuve -World Champion in 1997-, Johnny Herbert and Jean Alesi, whilst Melandri will be the only two-wheel star turning his hand to car racing for the event.

Melandri is still waiting on news of possible participation in the 2009 MotoGP World Championship following Kawasaki’s announcing their intention to withdraw from the series.

Next test crucial for wrist
y Michele Lostia and Matt Beer Thursday, February 12th 2009, 12:28 GMT

Casey StonerCasey Stoner says he will be extremely concerned about his 2009 MotoGP season if he continues to struggle with wrist pain in the Qatar test next month.

The former world champion was frustrated by the amount of discomfort in his wrist when he returned to action at Sepang last week, having expected surgery last November to solve the recurrent injury that had plagued the end of his 2008 campaign.

He hopes that his condition will improve before testing resumes at Losail on 1 March, but admitted that it would be an ominous sign if he continued to struggle in Qatar.

"Three months have gone by and my wrist has little mobility and hurts badly," Stoner told Motosprint. "I don't like the way this story is going at all.

"I'll try not to think about it until the test in Qatar, then we'll see. If the situation in Qatar hasn't improved radically, then it means there will be plenty to worry about.

"I just think that three months have gone by and in my opinion the situation isn't good at all. I say that I shouldn't be in this situation, because the bone has healed, yet it hurts me badly. That's what I can't explain.

"It's been really disappointing finding out that after three months the wrist is a lot worse than I expected. I already had a wrist operation before, and after two weeks I was already okay."

Despite the wrist problem, Stoner managed to be quickest on two of the three test days in Malaysia. He said he had surprised himself with his pace, although he had to limit himself to short runs.

"I try to adapt, to change the way I sit on the bike: I make some movements to make up for the fact that the wrist barely moves and most of all it hurts me a lot under braking," said Stoner.

"It feels almost unreal to me that I manage to be so quick. The situation is worse than I expected. I say it's not normal. I didn't expect to feel great, but not this bad either."

Electronics limited and Friday morning practices scrapped for 2009 season
Wednesday, 18 February 2009

Electronic systems will be partially limited in MotoGP and Friday morning practices removed from Grand Prix schedules as of the 2009 season following a GP Commission meeting in Geneva.

At a meeting of the Grand Prix Commission on Wednesday a number of rule changes have been made with immediate affect, ahead of the 2009 MotoGP World Championship.

At the headquarters of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme in Geneva, Switzerland, in the presence of FIM president Vito Ippolito, the Grand Prix Commission ratified proposals put forward and agreed on unanimously by the MSMA in meetings held earlier this year in Japan and Malaysia.

The amendments to the Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix Regulations address issues raised over the cost of competing in the championship with regards to the 2009 MotoGP season and beyond.

As of the 2009 season Friday morning free practice sessions for all classes have been removed from the Grand Prix schedules and all MotoGP practice sessions (including qualifying) have been reduced to 45 minutes in length.

Electronic and hydraulic launch control systems and electronic suspension systems have been banned.

Furthermore, in the eight 2009 MotoGP World Championship races which follow the summer break, commencing with the 14th-16th August trip to the Czech track of Brno, each MotoGP rider will be restricted to the use of a maximum of five engines until the end of the season.

Silverstone reveals new MotoGP layout
By Matt Beer Wednesday, February 18th 2009, 11:33 GMT

Posted Image

The Silverstone MotoGP layoutSilverstone has unveiled plans for a new track layout ready for the arrival of the British MotoGP round from 2010.

The circuit - which is losing the Formula One British Grand Prix to Donington Park from next year - announced last month that it had won the right to host motorcycle racing's premier championship instead, taking the MotoGP event from Donington.

As part of a £5 million revamp package, the Silverstone MotoGP track will leave the F1 layout at the Abbey chicane and travel up the International circuit towards Becketts, where it will join the National circuit via a tight left-hander to be known as the Arrowhead. New spectator areas will also be constructed around the section, which will be clearly visible from the Becketts grandstands.

There will also be changes to other spectator banks and grandstands to bring them closer to the circuit, while the chicane at Woodcote normally used by motorcycle events will be removed as part of alterations to the run-off at this point.

New pieces of track are also being created at Chapel and Club for MotoGP use.

The circuit's managing director Richard Phillips believes the changes will address any concerns that MotoGP had about the move to Silverstone.

"The new Arrowhead on the inside of Becketts will be a major new feature of the circuit," he said. "The fast approach and sharp left should provide plenty of opportunities to overtake, making it a real focal point for spectators.

Artists' impression of the Silverstone MotoGP track"The views will be fantastic, especially from the new spectator banking areas and grandstands we will be building around the Arrowhead.

"The viewing experience for fans is hugely important and we now have an opportunity to make sure it is absolutely right, all around the circuit. The new layout will also enable fans to circulate around the venue more easily, to watch all the action from different vantage points.

"We are making a significant investment but it is absolutely worth it. Early feedback from both riders and drivers has been very positive. The chicane at Woodcote is going and changes to other sections of the circuit should result in increased overtaking opportunities."

The current F1 GP track will not be affected by the changes, so will remain available for other events.

British Eurosport to continue MotoGP coverage?
By Matthew Birt

MotoGP

19 February 2009 09:25

British Eurosport has denied clinching a deal to continue showing coverage of the MotoGP world championship in 2009.

But MCN understands that a deal is close to being reached with MotoGP rights owners Dorna for coverage to continue on British Eurosport in 2009.

However, the deal is not expected to include live coverage of the MotoGP race. With the BBC having exclusive rights to show MotoGP in the UK, MCN understands as a result of that exclusivity, British Eurosport will show the MotoGP race delayed and not live.

Live coverage of the 125 and 250 races is expected to remain, as is British Eurosport’s heavy output of practice and qualifying from all three classes.

It is all part of a new deal struck by British Eurosport bosses and follows similar negotiations conducted by French Eurosport with Dorna.

But a British Eurosport spokeswoman told MCN: “At the moment there is nothing to add regarding MotoGP."

Dorna announced last June that it would end its long-standing collaboration with Eurosport.

The decision was part of Dorna’s new strategy of working with national network broadcasters around Europe, always focusing first and foremost on free-to-air coverage to bring MotoGP to wider audiences.

That deal effectively ended Eurosport’s international coverage, but in October Dorna cut a deal to continue coverage with the French arm of Eurosport.

Dorna’s decision to ditch MotoGP provoked a flood of complaints from fans in the UK, upset at the loss of favourite commentary team made up of Julian Ryder, Toby Moody and Randy Mamola.

Sponsors leave MotoGP world champ in the dust
Saturday, 21 February 2009
MotoGP 125cc world champion Gábor Talmácsi has lost all but one of his sponsors, forcing the team to restructure the budget for the current year. “We are mostly trying to save money on travel costs”, Talmácsi’s manager Stefano Favaro told Inforádio last Thursday, adding that smaller companies were revoking their earlier promises one after another because of the global financial crisis. Favaro said that the only remaining sponsor for the motorcyclist is Hungarian oil corporation MOL, but Talmácsi’s team is in negotiations, so his circle of supporters could grow before the season starts in Qatar on 12 April.

Melandri will race Kawasaki in MotoGP
Marco Melandri will race a Kawasaki in MotoGP this season after a deal was struck between the manufacturer and Dorna to enter a one-rider team.

Despite signing Melandri on a multi-year deal to partner John Hopkins in 2009, and development of the new ZX-RR well advanced, Kawasaki Heavy Industries announced on January 9 that it had 'decided to suspend its MotoGP racing activities from 2009 season onward and reallocate management resources more efficiently' in response to the global financial crises.

But Dorna, facing a slim 17 rider grid, was unwilling to allow Kawasaki to simply walk away from the remaining three years of its MotoGP contract, instead offering to release the company from the 2010 and 2011 seasons providing its machines were still on the grid in 2009 - and warning that they would 'take Kawasaki to court' if they were absent.

Dorna and Kawasaki have since been working on a solution that would satisfy both parties - and it is thought the decision to put one bike on the grid is an attempt by Kawasaki to minimise costs, whilst avoiding the possible financial penalty for breaking their MotoGP contract.

While full details of the new project are yet to be confirmed, it is understood that Kawasaki will supply the one-rider team with the necessary machines, parts and technical support

However, it isn't so clear how involved Kawasaki will be in the day-to-day running of the team, or indeed who will even head the squad - former boss Michael
Bartholemy was known to be trying to run the ZX-RRs as a privateer team, but has been silent since the official withdraw.

The future of John Hopkins is an even bigger question mark. Was Hopkins offered the chance to ride alongside Melandri and turned it down, or did the new agreement effectively force the #21 off the premier-class grid?

A short statement from Kawasaki said:
“Kawasaki announces that after constructive talks between Kawasaki, Dorna and other involved parties, a new one-rider Team will participate in the 2009 MotoGP Championship season.

“This decision was made after negotiations that followed Kawasaki's January 2009 announcement to suspend its factory supported MotoGP activities due to the economic crisis. Rider for the new MotoGP team will be the Italian Marco Melandri.

“The team will be equipped with Kawasaki motorcycles and supporting materials.

“That Kawasaki has come to this new team approach is the result of on the one hand the need for a strong reduction of MotoGP racing investments and on the other hand the necessity to come to constructive solutions for all related parties.

“The new team will disclose more details about its 2009 season's plans on a short notice.”

Melandri, who is due to make his second Speedcar appearance at Dubai on Friday and Saturday, is now expected to join his 2009 MotoGP rivals at the Qatar test, which starts on Sunday.

Melandri has already missed the Sepang test, although Kawasaki's test squad was in action at Eastern Creek and Phillip Island in January.

Kawasaki, the only MotoGP manufacturer not to win a race since the four-stroke era began in 2002, took a best finish of fifth last season with Hopkins and Anthony West, but had high hopes of an improvement from its brand new 2009 racer.

British Eurosport to retain MotoGP
By Matt Beer Thursday, February 26th 2009, 11:58 GMT

Eurosport commentators Julian Ryder and Toby MoodyBritish Eurosport will continue to broadcast MotoGP coverage in 2009 alongside the BBC, the sport's rights-holder Dorna has announced.

It had been thought that Eurosport's long relationship with MotoGP would end this season as Dorna pushed to ensure that live race coverage was on free to air television whenever possible.

This saw the BBC awarded exclusive UK broadcast rights for the MotoGP races, but British Eurosport has now completed a deal to show all Friday and Saturday practice sessions, and the 125cc and 250cc races, live plus slightly delayed coverage of all the MotoGP races. These will be broadcast just after the BBC's live race coverage has finished.

Autosport.com's MotoGP correspondent Toby Moody will remain part of the British Eurosport commentary team.

The BBC has also announced full details of its plans for MotoGP coverage in 2009. It will continue to show all 18 MotoGP races live on its television channels, while the qualifying sessions for all three world championship classes, and the 125cc and 250cc races, will be shown via its Red Button digital service.

Its MotoGP Extra analysis programme will also run on the Red Button channels immediately after the live coverage of each MotoGP race.

"We are delighted to be offering more than ever of the world's leading motorcycle series," said Philip Bernie, the BBC's head of TV Sport Editorial.

"Our coverage of MotoGP, the 250s and 125s means that BBC viewers will be able to get the most comprehensive view of this spectacular sport. Combined with our new F1 contract, this means the BBC is now showcasing fully the best motor sport on both two wheels and four wheels."

The BBC and British Eurosport will both make their MotoGP coverage available on their respective iPlayer and Eurosport Player online catch-up systems.

e sad, dal' je to vazi samo za British, ili ce biti i za nas, nemam pojma. bolje da odlozim slavlje.

Bulgaria to host race before 2016

Bulgaria will host a round of the MotoGP world championship between 2012 and 2016, according to the Bulgarian motorcycling federation.

The BMF has signed a preliminary agreement with Dorna Sports, which holds the commercial rights to Moto GP, to stage a round of the world championship for five years.

"Yes, we signed the agreement with (Dorna boss) Carmelo Ezpeleta and we're very pleased because no country from our region has hosted a motorcycle grand prix," BMF's chief Bogdan Nikolov told Reuters.

"It's still not clear which track will host the races as we're still thinking over two options," he said.

Nikolov recently said a new track, to be built near the northern town of Dolna Mitropoliya, will probably host the races.

Bulgaria is also due to stage a round of the World Rally Championship next year and is keen to host a Formula One race.

Melandri surprised by Kawasaki announcement
Marco Melandri has revealed his surprise at being announced by Kawasaki as the lone rider for its new 'scaled down' MotoGP entry in 2009.

A Kawasaki statement released on Thursday confirmed that, after negotiations with Dorna and 'other involved parties', its planned MotoGP withdraw has been replaced by 'a new one-rider Team [which] will participate in the 2009 MotoGP Championship... equipped with Kawasaki motorcycles and supporting materials.'

Both Melandri and John Hopkins had contracts with the previous Kawasaki Racing Team for the 2009 MotoGP season, but the release was clear: 'Rider for the new MotoGP team will be the Italian Marco Melandri.'

However, Melandri claims he has not yet officially agreed to such a project and is waiting to see how the new 2009 ZX-RR performs during the forthcoming Qatar test, which starts on Sunday.

"The announcement was a surprise for me too!” Melandri told Sportmediaset.it “I knew they were looking for a new team name [rumoured to be 'Hayate'] but that was all. The Japanese have not contacted me yet.

"I'm going to the Qatar test to understand the level of the new machine with respect to the competition and then we can discuss everything... The new bike is said to be a radical change compared to the 2008 bike so I am curious to experience it myself.”

Kawasaki becomes Hayate
The start of Sunday's opening night of testing in Qatar also marked the return of Marco Melandri and Kawasaki to MotoGP action, under the new name of 'Hayate Racing Team'.

Kawasaki announced on Thursday that, after talks with Dorna and other parties, it had reversed its planned withdraw from MotoGP - made in response to the global economic crisis - and would instead support a new unofficial one-rider MotoGP team for 2009.

Melandri was named as the sole rider, although the former MotoGP World Championship runner-up claimed he has yet to officially agree to the project and is waiting to see how the 2009 ZX-RR performs at the three-night Qatar test.

Melandri, the first rider on track tonight, indicated that his first impression of the new ZX-RR was positive.

The Hayate Racing Team will be run by former Kawasaki Racing director Ichiro Yoda, with Andrea Dosoli as team manager and Jasja Bos team coordinator. Former Kawasaki Racing Team boss Michael Bartholemy does not appear to be involved in the new structure.

Hayate means hurricane in Japanese.

Qatar MotoGP test times - Sunday
MotoGP lap times from a quiet opening night at the Qatar test, held at Losail.

One hour after the circuit opened at 6pm, a rain shower brought proceedings to an abrupt halt. With no sun to dry the floodlit surface, wet patches remained on parts of the track until the end of the test at 12 midnight.

As a result, reigning world champion Valentino Rossi (like team-mate Jorge Lorenzo) completed only one lap, while Casey Stoner, Dani Pedrosa and Loris Capirossi never left the pits.

Nevertheless, Sunday marked the return of Kawasaki, running Marco Melandri in its new 'unofficial' format under the name of 'Hayate Racing Team'. Guinea Ecuatorial Team's Sete Gibernau is absent due to a shoulder injury.

Testing continues on Monday night with the opening round of the 2009 MotoGP World Championship also at Qatar, on the evening of April 12.

Pedrosa injured in Qatar fall
Dani Pedrosa's pre-season preparations have suffered a worrying setback after the Repsol Honda rider was stretchered away from a Monday night test accident in Qatar with hand and leg injuries.

The team is yet to officially comment on his condition, but initial medical reports indicate slight damage to his hand, but also suggest he has re-opened the left knee injury for which he underwent surgery in December.

Pedrosa finished last month's Sepang test one day early in order to rest that knee, which he injured on the first lap of the Australian Grand Prix.

The Spaniard previously injured his hand and leg when he fell from the lead of the wet 2008 German Grand Prix. Pedrosa was also leading the 2008 world championship at the time of the accident but eventually slipped back to third in the title chase.

Pedrosa, the only rider to win a race on the RC212V, began the 2008 MotoGP season injured, after falling during testing at Sepang.

Pedrosa facing knee and forearm surgery
After a detailed examination of his left knee and forearm injuries sustained in a Monday night highside at the Qatar test, it has been announced that Dani Pedrosa will need surgery for both injuries.

Pedrosa, whose knee was still recovering from surgery in December - following damage on lap one of the Australian Grand Prix - was hit by his Repsol Honda after falling at turn 10 in the final hours of the second night in Qatar.

“Now I will go home for some more scans and hopefully they won't show anything more serious,” Pedrosa had said before leaving for Spain.

The #3 arrived in Barcelona on Tuesday and was taken directly to the USP Institut Universitari Dexeus hospital, where he was examined by Doctor Mir, the head of the Hand Surgery Unit, and his team.

After a checkup and diagnostic tests (TAC in 3 dimensions and Magnetic Resonance) Pedrosa was unfortunately diagnosed with a fracture on his left forearm-wrist. This injury will be operated on at 18:00 on Wednesday, when a titanium screw will be inserted.

In addition, the check-up revealed that Pedrosa has bruising and a loss of some flesh around his left knee (which received three stitches in Qatar) which will require skin graft surgery on Wednesday.

The estimated recovery time will not be known until after the surgery, but the final pre-season test takes place at Jerez from March 28-29, with the season-opening race at Qatar on April 12.

Pedrosa - the only Honda rider to win MotoGP races since 2006 - also began last season injured after fracturing a hand during testing at Sepang.

Nevertheless, the 2007 world championship runner-up was leading the title chase when he fell from the lead of the wet German Grand Prix, in mid-July. Pedrosa fractured the top bone of his left index finger in the incident and also damaged his right ankle, forcing him to miss the following US GP.
