Sir Arthur C. Clarke, author of "2001: A Space Odyssey" and other popular science fiction novels, is among the survivors of Sunday's tsunami that hit his home nation of Sri Lanka and other Asian countries.
Like scientists who focus on the dangers of these incredible sea waves, Sir Arthur has written about them. He provided this message Monday on his foundation's web site:
"Thank you for your concern about my safety in the wake of Sunday’s devastating tidal wave.
"I am enormously relieved that my family and household have escaped the ravages of the sea that suddenly invaded most parts of coastal Sri Lanka, leaving a trail of destruction.
How Tsunamis Work
"But many others were not so fortunate. For hundreds of thousands of Sri Lankans and an unknown number of foreign tourists, the day after Christmas turned out to be a living nightmare reminiscent of The Day After Tomorrow.
"Among those affected are my staff based at our diving station in Hikkaduwa and holiday bungalow in Kahawa – both beachfront properties located in areas worst hit. We still don’t know the fully extent of damage as both roads and phones have been damaged. Early reports indicate that we have lost most of our diving equipment and boats. Not all our staff members are accounted for – yet.
"This is indeed a disaster of unprecedented magnitude for Sri Lanka which lacks the resources and capacity to cope with the aftermath. We are all trying to contribute to the relief efforts. We shall keep you informed as we learn more about what happened.
"Curiously enough, in my first book on Sri Lanka, I had written about another tidal wave reaching the Galle harbour (see Chapter 8 in "The Reefs of Taprobane," 1957). That happened in August 1883, following the eruption of Krakatoa in roughly the same part of the Indian Ocean."

Strong quake rattles northern Japan, authorities warn of small tsunami
Mon Dec 6, 9:46 AM ET
TOKYO (AP) - A strong earthquake shook northern Japan late Monday, and authorities warned of a threat of a small tsunami wave along the country's northeastern shore.
Japan's Meteorological Agency said the quake, which struck off the coast of Japan's northernmost main island of Hokkaido, at 11:15 p.m., had a magnitude of 7.0.
The agency quickly issued a tsunami warning for the eastern shores of Hokkaido's Pacific coastal area. Tsunami are potentially dangerous waves triggered by seismic activity.

"We are worried because what happens, in any tsunami, these massive waves, is the sewer and water systems get combined. They get put together," Natsios, the USAID Administrator, told CNN.
"And as a result of that, the only water people drink is basically mixed with sewage, and that means a high risk of cholera and other communicable disease that can begin epidemics."

klasican nacin formiranja tsunamija posle pomeranja tektonskih ploca kojih 18 metara kao u Aziji:
Tsunamis can be generated when the sea floor abruptly deforms and vertically displaces the overlying water. Tectonic earthquakes are a particular kind of earthquake that are associated with the earth's crustal deformation; when these earthquakes occur beneath the sea, the water above the deformed area is displaced from its equilibrium position. Waves are formed as the displaced water mass, which acts under the influence of gravity, attempts to regain its equilibrium. When large areas of the sea floor elevate or subside, a tsunami can be created.
Large vertical movements of the earth's crust can occur at plate boundaries. Plates interact along these boundaries called faults. Around the margins of the Pacific Ocean, for example, denser oceanic plates slip under continental plates in a process known as subduction. Subduction earthquakes are particularly effective in generating tsunamis.

Thailand decided not to issue a tsunami warning:

US je znala za tsunami:
International ocean monitors predicted that a tsunami would likely follow the deadly earthquake that hit the Indian Ocean on Sunday. But they didn’t know who to inform.
"We put out a bulletin within 20 minutes, technically as fast as we could do it," said Jeff LaDouce, an official in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
LaDouce noted that they e-mailed Indonesian officials, but said that he wasn’t aware what happened after they sent the e-mails.#
edit:
i evo svi seizmolozi na svetu su registrovali taj zemljotres :
"This is the type of earthquake that's recorded by every seismograph in the world, and recorded very clearly," said Jim Lawson, chief geophysicist with the OGS. "This is almost the biggest earthquake that could occur."
