'Nico Rosberg a world champion and nothing else,' says ex-Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone
Dec 7, 2016 17:14 IST

Bernie Ecclestone says Nico Rosberg's shock retirement is certainly not good for Formula One but the German will only be remembered as one-time World Champion and not a great of the sport.

Rosberg's decision, though widely respected, opened a debate over the timing of his retirement, which came five days after he secured the world title at the season finale in Abu Dhabi.

Can he be put in the same league of his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton, a three-time champion, or the likes of Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso, who have won four and two titles respectively? Formula One supremo Ecclestone doesn't think so.

"Well, lets just say he is a world champion. The other names that you mentioned (Hamilton, Vettel, Alonso) have obviously won more than a few times and have achieved more. So I would just call Nico a world champion and nothing else," Ecclestone told PTI from London.

However, he insists Rosberg's absence from the grid is a loss to the sport.

"Okay, not as popular as Lewis but Nico was a very popular driver. So his absence is certainly not good for Formula One," said Ecclestone, who was lifted off his feet by a jubilant Rosberg minutes after he finished second at the Yas Marina Circuit to clinch the world title.

The 31-year-old drove his heart out the entire season to halt the juggernaut of Hamilton, who was denied his third title in a row in Abu Dhabi.

With his feat, Keke Rosberg and Nico became the only the second father-son duo to be crowned as world champions.

His sudden retirement has created a coveted slot at Mercedes, who have been the Constructors' Champions for the past three seasons. It is no secret that Mercedes are considering the experienced Alonso for the job along with others.

If Alonso finds way out of his contract with McLaren and joins Mercedes, it will be the second time that he would partner Hamilton, forming a mouthwatering partnership.

"A lot of people are linking Alonso with the Mercedes drive but I would like to wait and see what decision the team takes. He is a fine driver without a doubt," said Ecclestone.

On the new technical regulations in 2017 and the way ahead for Formula One under new owners Liberty Media, the 86-year-old added: "Formula One remains big but I think it is too early to talk about how it would be with new owners taking charge".

Nico Rosberg has hit back at his former boss Niki Lauda, following criticism of his sudden decision to quit Mercedes and formula one.

Lauda, the F1 legend and Mercedes team chairman, had said German Rosberg made the outfit look "stupid" by leaving it with a top driver to replace in December.

But Rosberg told the German newspaper Die Zeit: "I don't understand what Niki was riding when he said that. He must have misunderstood something.

"If it had only been up to me, I would rather have waited until Christmas to announce my retirement, but I didn't want to do that to the team," he added.

Rosberg said there is little room for pure selfishness in F1, "But my life belongs to me".

So Rosberg defended his decision to quit as champion, insisting that had he failed to achieve his career dream this year, he would have tried again in 2017.

"It was strange," he said. "The thought of quitting was motivating. At the same time I couldn't think about it too much, otherwise I would lose focus."

But he did reveal the extent of the stress he was under as he fought for the title this year, saying that "because of the pressure", he struggled even to sleep.

And referring to his battles since 2014 with Hamilton, Rosberg told Sport Bild: "Fighting Lewis in the same car and losing twice was horrible -- disgusting.

"I had to fight back again and again. Beating him is just exhausting. It sucks a lot out of you physically but most of all mentally.

"I did mental training, started to meditate. In Japan, I met a zen master before the race. I raised everything to the next level.

"Last winter, I bought two go-karts and drove, drove, drove -- as much as when I was 14 and fought for the karting world championship. And I analysed why Lewis beat me so often in fights and realised I had to take more risks.

"Now I have reached my goal. Sure, I could have gone on, trying to defend the title. But why?

"It's easy to want more, more, more, but you also have to be careful and not lose yourself as a person. For me there is nothing more than this title. I wanted it and I got it.

"I feel as though I have climbed Mount Everest, I'm standing on the top and no peak that I see is higher."

A opet vozio jos nekoliko godina.

Mercedes boss Dieter Zetsche has revealed to Autocar the moment he discovered that Nico Rosberg was retiring from Formula 1.

And – of course – he was getting out the shower. “I was stepping out of the shower lacking any clothes - which I normally do when I get out of the shower! And my phone was ringing,” Zetsche explained.

“And I saw it was Toto [Wolff, Mercedes F1 boss] and I thought, oh again, something with Lewis! But then I got the news. And I did not expect that, I must say.”

But Zetsche said he was quick to accept the move by Rosberg to step away from the F1 circus.

He continued: “I respected that decision. I mean, obviously, one [Hamilton] is saying 'I want more and more and I want to break more records and make history', and the other one [Rosberg] is saying 'well, I finally fulfilled my life dream and what can be on top of that?', and both approaches are legitimate.”

Zetsche acknowledged it would have been easier for the team if Rosberg had stayed, given that it would have meant having two world champions behind the wheel: “Of course, it would have been easier and more pleasant for us to have two world champions in our team for the season to come - not necessarily less fight but this was part of the entertainment, and now we need a new driver and that’s how life works. And so I was not insulted or totally disappointed. I respected his decision."

Rosberg still hopes to renew 'good relationship' with Hamilton
Wednesday, 22 March 2017
By RACER staff / Images by LAT

Retired world champion Nico Rosberg remains hopeful that he and Lewis Hamilton can rebuild their relationship now that they are no longer competing against one another.

The pair were close friends while rising through the junior ranks, but their rivalry became increasingly acrimonious during their four years as Mercedes teammates; the latter three of which pitched them against each other in the championship fight.

Hamilton beat Rosberg to the crown in 2014 and '15 before the German's 2016 triumph, which was followed just five days later by the announcement of his retirement. Speaking to internationally-syndicated sports interview series "In Depth with Graham Bensinger," Rosberg said he and Hamilton spoke shortly before his retirement was announced in what he believes could be a first step toward a permanent thawing of their relationship.

"It was important for me to tell [Lewis] personally [about retirement], because of the battles we've had and everything," said Rosberg (pictured above visiting his former team during pre-season testing). "I just wrote him a message before the actual announcement, and then afterwards we got together and had a chat about it, and just went through stuff and it was a nice conversation. And I'm open to finding our way, and even having a good relationship again in the future. Why not?"

rosberg_hamilton_abu_dhabi.jpeg

Despite the olive branch, Rosberg remains convinced that Hamilton was in the wrong from a team standpoint at the Abu Dhabi finale (pictured), where the Briton slowed down and tried to back Rosberg into traffic. Despite his disapproval though, he admits that Hamilton had his own title hopes to think of.

"It was not right, what [Lewis] did," Rosberg said. "In the end, we're driving according to certain guidelines that are given to us by the team. And I respected those guidelines, because in Monaco we had exactly a similar situation where I was second, he was third, and I was driving too slow – just as he was in Abu Dhabi. And so we were risking a good team result, so the team wanted me to let him past. And I just did straight away – let him past. And he got the race win, which helped him in the championship fight as well, ironically.

"And so it was the same situation in Abu Dhabi and he didn't abide by those rules, so from a team's perspective, that was not the right thing to do. But as an individual I can understand why he wanted to try something."
