Final result: Latvia 3-2 Finland

Perhaps not the greatest strength in depth in Latvia? If it wasn't for Ernest Gulbis, who took all three of their points and rendered the final rubber obsolete, the Latvians would have struggled in this one.

MARSEILLE, France -- Third-seeded Ernests Gulbis of Latvia beat defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France 7-6 (5), 6-4 to win his fifth career title and maintain his perfect record in finals.

Playing in his 19th career final, the second-seeded Tsonga was favorite to win the Open 13 for the third time and to secure an 11th career title, but he struggled with Gulbis' attacking approach.

Tsonga was under pressure throughout, saving 10 of the 11 break-points he faced and failing to take the two chances he created on the serve of Gulbis, who had 14 aces and hit 41 winners compared to 22 for his opponent.

Gulbis, ranked 23rd, beat France's two best players in straight sets on his way to the title, eliminating the top-seeded Richard Gasquet 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals.

After defeating world No. 9 Richard Gasquet and world No. 10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to win Marseille, Ernests Gulbis is on the verge of cracking the Top 20 for the first time, but says that is not good enough.

"My long-term goal in tennis isn't to be Top 20. It's to be No. 1," Gulbis told reporters. "Anything less than that wouldn't make me fully satisfied. I don't want to get to 30 years old, look back on my career and say I didn't make something of it. Everybody's looking for satisfaction in life, and my joy and happiness is based on my tennis career…I don't feel I'm in the same league as the [Top 4] yet, I need to prove it. Game-wise, I think that I can be."

As for smashing his racquet, that was only to be expected – and he did give the mangled remains to one of the kids sitting in the crowd. Not only did he need to let off a little steam, he also had to fulfill a lifetime goal.

“I have to respect every court, you know,” he said, grinning from ear to ear. “I have to break at least one racquet on every court of the world.  Otherwise if I would show too much disrespect to Paris centre court and I cannot allow this to myself. I just had to do it.”

“You start to understand: OK, first make one step. Don’t miss five days of practice. Just miss three days of practice, and then two days, and then one, and then nothing. So it’s a process.”—Ernests Gulbis, on his highly idiosyncratic evolution as a tennis player.
