Gene: I thought I was going to die
Monday, June 2nd 2008, 14:05 GMT

Marc GeneMarc Gene says he thought he was going to die when he crashed and rolled a Peugeot 908 HDi at Le Mans yesterday.

The former grand prix driver, who was sharing the No.7 car with Nicolas Minassian and Jacques Villeneuve in the test day for 24 Hours, spun and rolled into a barrier in the Porsche Curves, destroying the car and fracturing a toe.

"The truth is that I didn't think I would survive the accident," he said on his personal website. "This has been, without a doubt, the biggest crash of my career and it was a miracle that I walked away.

"I just want to thank Peugeot for building a car that saved my life. Now I'm only thinking about recovering and being ready for the race. We face a great challenge to rebuild the car but I trust Peugeot, who have supported me a lot since the accident."

Gene is expected to be fit to drive in the first qualifying session for the 24 Hours next Wednesday.

Ovde možete videti i čuti to "čudo".link

"In the early stages of the race, the #55 car made its way to third place with the #18 car behind it 2 laps down. The #18 had a lower gear ratio setup meaning the car used less fuel but was 20 km/h (12 mph) slower. The #55 would by night, move into second place, when the Mercedes-Benz C11 of Michael Schumacher, Fritz Kreutzpointner and Karl Wendlinger spun off and later pitted with a gearbox problem."

Sarrazin sets blinding pace for Peugeot
By Steven English Wednesday, June 11th 2008, 19:18 GMT

Peugeot set a shattering pace in the first qualifying session for this weekend's Le Mans 24 Hours with two of the French diesel-powered 908 HDis setting 3:18 lap times.

Stephane Sarrazin, in the No.8 car, lapped eight seconds quicker than last year's pole time with a best of 3:18.513.

The Frenchman was fastest for much of the first session, and eventually ran four seconds quicker than the best time he set on the test day 10 days ago. Then team-mate Franck Montagny put the No.9 car just one tenth behind, two thirds of the way through the two-hour session.

Nicolas Minassian completed a lock out of the top three for the French manufacturer.

Seven-time winner Tom Kristensen set the quickest Audi time in the No.2 R10 TDi, but his lap was nearly seven seconds off the pace of the lead Peugeots.

Mike Rockenfeller drove the next fastest Audi, half a second off Kristensen's time, with Frank Biela rounding out the top six a further two seconds back.

Jean-Christophe Boullion was best of the petrol-powered cars, taking seventh for Pescarolo just a second off the back of the Audis. The Japanese Dome also set an impressive pace with Daisuke Ito at the wheel, going eighth overall in the new prototype.

Michael Vergers posted a late quick lap to go to the top of the LMP2 standings in the Barazi Epsilon. The lead Porsches from Van Merksteijn and Essex were just a second further back with Jos Verstappen and Sascha Maasen setting the quickest times in each.

The Van Merksteijn Porsche picked up a right rear puncture later in the session, though, forcing Peter van Merksteijn to limp back to the pits with damage to the bodywork of the RS Spyder.

Christophe Bouchet was fastest of the GT1 cars in the Larbre Saleen, ahead of the Corvettes of Oliver Gavin and Johnny O'Connell. The factory Aston Martins of Antonio Garcia and Heinz-Harald Frentzen were fourth and fifth in class.

Porsches struck the first blow in GT2 with the IMSA and Flying Lizards cars leading the way, ahead of the Virgo Motorsport Ferrari and the Felbermayr Porsche.

Peugeot take top 3 grid positions for Le Mans 24 hours

Peugeot have taken this years qualifying by storm and when the chequered flag fell they occupied a very impressive 1st, 2nd and 3rd in LM P1. The Audis did begin to speed up towards the end of the session but pole is safe for the #8 Team Peugeot Total, Peugeot 908 HDI FAP driven by Lamy, Sarrazin and Wurz.

They never came under any threat all the way through two days of qualifying; however it is interesting to see that at one point when both Audi and Peugeot were running in ‘race trim’ they were both putting in steady 3:26/27 laps. So maybe they are in fact rather more evenly matched than it looks on the time sheets. Whatever the times might say there is no doubt that both teams have carefully worked out their race strategy, almost regardless of these qualifying performances. However Peugeot are facing some problems rebuilding the #9 Peugeot Sport Total, Peugeot 908 HDI FAP that crashed heavily. The team will now be under pressure to ship more spare parts down to Le Mans to virtually rebuild the car. After #7 Team Peugeot Total, Peugeot 908 HDI FAP was written off during testing the team are facing a tense build up to the race despite their tremendous outright speed advantage. The fastest petrol powered car was the #10 Charouz Racing System, Lola Aston Martin which was eventually 6th overall ahead of the #1 Audi Sport North America, Audi R10 driven by Biela, Pirro and Werner

In LMP2 the Porsche Spyders have been swapping times all the way through qualifying. It has been an impressive show and they are placed 14th and 16th overall. Next up in 19th place is the #32 Barazi Epsilon, Zytek 07S driven by Barazi, Vergers and Moseley. They are almost two seconds behind the two Porsches.

In LMGT1 The quickest car is the #63 Corvette Racing, Corvette C6.R of O'Connell, Magnussen and Fellows which has been at the top of the sheets most of the day. The surprise is seeing the #50 Larbre Competition, Saleen S7R of Bouchut, Bornhauser and Smet lying second ahead of the powerful line up in the #64 Corvette Racing, Corvette C6.R of Beretta Gavin and Papis. After a slow start the #009 Aston Martin Racing, Aston Martin DBR9 of Brabham,Garcia and Turner has moved into a more encouraging 4th in class. So there is a very interesting mix of cars in LMGT1 and they all seem pretty evenly matched.

In LMGT2 The Porsches have shown their strength and finally dominated the Ferraris with the #76 Imsa Performance Matmut, Porsche 911 GT3 RSR on pole driven by Narac, Longa and Lietz. Second in class was the #77 Team Felbermayr-Proton, Porsche 911 GT3 RSR driven by Davison, Henzler and Felbermayr sen. Third was the #96 Virgo Motorsport, Ferrari F430 GT driven by Bell,Sugden and Mullen. This was a bit of a surprise since the Ferraris were expected to be quicker than the Porsches.

So all the cars have qualified with the possible exception of the #22 Tokai University - YGK Power, Courage-Oreca Ygk Suzuki Kageyama Kurosawa which may be struggling, they are 35 seconds slower than pole and that might not have been quick enough to qualify.
