Joan As Policewoman
Signed to label: Reveal Records
From: New York, New York State
Named after the '70s TV series "Police Woman" starring Angie Dickenson as an undercover cop, Joan As Police Woman is the solo project of New York based Joan Wasser. Described as being "vocally reminiscent of Deborah Harry singing Nina Simone" (Village Voice) Joan is a member of Mercury Music Prize winners
Antony & The Johnsons, and part of
Rufus Wainwright's band. She has also been a member of The Dambuilders, Those Bastard Souls, Mind Science Of The Mind and Black Beetle (which she formed with
Jeff Buckley's band). Released December 5th, Joan’s debut single for Reveal Records - taken from her self-titled, self-released EP, ‘My Gurl’ - will be available on coloured limited edition 7” only and backed with a cover of David Bowie’s ‘Sweet Thing’ which is exclusive to this release.
Throughout her career she has changed the profile of the violin in rock music and now extends this innovative strength to singing and songwriting. Her voice, songs and stage presence have garnered comparisons to Nina Simone, Dusty Springfield, Prince and Chrissie Hynde - but comparisons will never do justice to her unique voice and brazen attitude. Wasser's spare and dynamic arrangements are complimented by poetic, emotional lyrics sung at one moment in a deep throaty swoon and the next in a high wail. Joan leads her trio on guitar and wurlitzer accompanied by Rainy Orteca on bass and Ben Perowsky on drums.
Joan has recorded with or played alongside a scarily impressive list of musicians, from Lou Reed to Laurie Anderson, Dave Gahan to Elton John, Sheryl Crow to Scissor Sisters. A groundbreaking artist that defies easy classification, a rock-jazz-punk-folk-r&b singer, songwriter, keyboardist, guitarist and violinist.
