World’s First Shipboard Go-kart Track
The world’s first full-scale shipboard racetrack is now on the water, in a project which has brought the best out of German karting technology specialist RiMO Supply and Dutch decking specialist Bolidt for owner Norwegian Cruise Line.
The 326m long, 167,800 gt Norwegian Joy entered the water at Germany’s Meyer Werft in March, offering a glimpse of surface from Bolidt that has been extensively used for road works, car parks and bridges, but which has never before been requested for go-karting afloat.
Some 230m of track have been manufactured, using Bolideck Racetrack, a synthetic material that is based on established road surfacing technology. The breakthrough delivery has been possible due to the product’s high flexibility and hard-wearing qualities, which will allow 20 karts onboard to race around on its slip-resistant surface at any one time.
Jacco van Overbeek, Director, Maritime Division, Bolidt, said, "The product is ideal for this application. It is durable, and slip resistant enough for safety purposes but not so non-slip as to take the thrill out of racing. RiMO came to our test facilities in the Netherlands to evaluate our wearing courses with their karts. Through this collaboration, we were able to develop the optimum grip on the flooring system for the race track. The look and feel of the material needs to be authentic, and the end result is both functional and attractive."
RIMO designed the track to NCL specifications and Bolidt worked with them to determine where the markings within the Bolideck Racetrack system needed to go, and how the deck finish would be finessed underneath the side skirts and against the edges of the steel track. The complete project involved the delivery of around 1350m2 of Bolideck Racetrack.
The race track is located on the ship's upper decks, 18 and 19, and features a viewing platform, covered pit lane, workshop, storage room, timing system and floodlights. RiMO also supplied the electrically powered race karts that will use special technology to ensure they work well under the very particular conditions encountered at sea, with high levels of UV and saltwater exposure.
Norwegian Joy, which can accommodate up to 4,200 passengers, is due to be handed over to NCL by Meyer Werft towards the end of April. She is the first cruise ship built by NCL specifically for the Chinese market, and will be homeported in Shanghai and Tianjin. Her maiden cruise is expected to commence in June this year.

The Gilles Villeneuve Formula 1 circuit in Montreal is currently undergoing key upgrades in preparation for the June 11 race.
Due to the changes to the technical regulations, the introduction this season of faster Formula 1 cars has forced the FIA to revise the safety features of every F1 circuit. Experts predict the F1 cars to be quicker by three to five seconds a lap in June in Montréal.
The layout of the circuit will not be altered, just the safety features of the track.
Most of the guardrails and some 5,000 tires will be removed and replaced by the new Tecpro barriers. These red-and-white barriers made of polyethene are filled with plastic, foam and even sand sometimes. They offer a significantly better energy dispersion when a car slams into them.
The FIA also wants to see the traditional gravel traps be replaced by portions of asphalt like what's seen at other F1 tracks. The infamous “Québec Wall” – also known as the ¨Wall of Champions”, the concrete wall that’s located at the exit of the last chicane – will see its angle modified, because the FIA found it was dangerous.
For now, cranes, payloaders, trucks and graders are in action in corners 1 and 2 (Senna), 5, 13 and 14 (Québec Wall). Then, work will begin in corners 7 and 8, and 10 (the Jacques Cartier bridge hairpin). A SAFER barrier as seen on most NASCAR ovals will replace the old steel guardrails in corner 5.
The promoter of the Grand Prix, engineers and workers expect to have the work finished by mid-May.

Brown says F1 and Long Beach are no longer compatible
McLaren CEO Zak Brown says that rumors of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach being on Liberty Media’s list of potential U.S. Formula 1 events are wide of the mark for both financial and practical reasons.
Brown stated that although Liberty Media, who took control of the Formula One Group late last year, is scoping venues to expand F1’s footprint in the U.S., there was no reason to believe that the Grand Prix of Long Beach – which switched from F1 to Indy cars in 1984 – would be perceived as a viable option.
He told Motorsport.com: “The Grand Prix of Long Beach is obviously a fantastic event and has a wonderful 43-year history, initially with Formula 1 but most recently with IndyCar. It’s a great venue for IndyCar.
“But the economics that Formula 1 requires would need heavy subsidy from government, and from what I understand, I don’t believe Long Beach is prepared to pay that type of rights fee.
“The other very significant part is that to host an F1 race, the track would need to be FIA Grade 1, and that would need a longer track with much more run-off and a substantial pit complex. Well, the track is up against the harbor so you’re not really dealing with an environment that is easy to modify! Plus, the entire circuit resides within the jurisdiction of the California Coastal Commission so any circuit improvements such as the necessary pit/garage complex would be subject to their review and approval.
“So even from the construction point of view, the amount of capital expenditure that would be needed is tens and tens and tens of millions of dollars. On top of that, like I say, the rights fee for Formula 1 is infinitely more than IndyCar demands.
“Combine those two costs together and there is no economic model where private investors can get any return on that investment, so therefore it all comes back to the state of California and the City of Long Beach coming up with the funding. I know KPMG has been hired to conduct a study, but that study is going to say it will cost hundreds of millions in commitment.”
The nearest point of comparison is the Circuit of The Americas, which hosts the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, which is paying a rights fee agreement of $250m over 10 years.

Braun je u pravu, Long Bic ne zeli F1, nedavno su izjavili da planiraju dugorocno da ostanu sa Indikarom. Studija o isplativosti prelaska kod F1 se radi samo zato sto imaju zakonsku obavezu da je odrade ako se javi potencijalni promoter, a javio se, da se uporede troskovi, zarada, drustveni uticaj i ostali faktori izmedju ostanka sa Indikarom i prelaska na F1. Inace se vec zna zakljucak - potrebna su ogromna ulaganja da se staza dovede na standarde F1, potrebno je izgraditi novi padok i boksove, za to su potrebne vladine subvencije koje LB nikada nece dobiti, a da bi takva staza bila profitabilna neophodno bi bilo drasticno povecanje cena sto bi trku ucinilo nepristupacnom lokalnoj populaciji - LB kao grad je ponosan sto vecinu njihove publike cine lokalne familije sa decom i ne zeli da se to menja.
No, cinjenice takve kakve su nece spreciti autisticne F1 medije da izvestavaju kako je LB prakticno vec stavljen na F1 kalendar, jer pobogu kako je moguce da neko ne zeli da ugosti F1???

Ovi iz Libertija su već smislili zamenu za LB u vidu noćne VN NJu Jorka i to već sledeće godine. Ubio me bog ako ikada vidimo VN NJu Jorka u skorijoj budućnosti. Za to vreme Alejandro Agag ima trke u LB (nije u aktuelnom kalendaru ali možda će sledeće godine biti) i NJu Jorku istovremeno, koja komedija. Formula E se šprda s Formulom 1 za sve pare. Agag je nedavno izjavio "bolje biti glava miša nego rep lava"..

Formula One: Bernie Ecclestone made us 'look like idiots' - Sepang boss
London (AFP) - Bernie Ecclestone was accused on Friday of having "made us look like idiots" by the chief executive of Malaysia's Sepang International Circuit after the former Grand Prix supremo admitted deliberately over-charging tracks to stage Formula One races.
"I don't understand why he made those kinds of statements," Razlan Razali told AFP in an interview in London. "As a loyal customer of his for the last 19 years, it showed a total lack of respect, I think, and made us look like idiots in some ways."
This year will witness the last Malaysian Grand Prix for the foreseeable future, with the race disappearing from the calendar a year earlier than planned after a combination of low attendances and high fees. The government spent some US$67.6 million (S$94.46 million) annually to stage a race first run in 1999, and that was no longer something that Sepang International Circuit (SIC) officials and their political bosses could tolerate.
Earlier this month, 86-year-old British businessman Ecclestone, ousted from his controlling position in Formula One during the off-season following a takeover by US-based Liberty Media, gave an interview in which he admitted over-charging.
Speaking to Autosport magazine during the Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sakhir circuit, one of several new venues for Formula One since the turn of the century, he said: "When I convinced people to build this place and all the other places, I feel a little bit responsible. I charged them too much for what we provide.
"On my watch, we didn't deliver the show that we charged people for."
He added: "Sooner or later I'm frightened that the governments behind them (the track promoters) will say enough is enough, and bye-bye."
That is pretty much what happened in Malaysia and Razali added: "We always complained that the cost was too high and every year we tried to negotiate to get more value for money.
"To come out with that kind of statement, it's frustrating and it makes us look like (idiots) really."

WEEHAWKEN -- Years after the possibility of a Grand Prix race in New Jersey failed to get to the starting line, the idea has reportedly gained new life.
Citing a report in the German Auto Motor Und Sport publication, several racing reports Thursday said a Formula 1 race through Weehawken is once again a real possibility.
According to Newswheel, F1's new owner, Liberty Media, is in negotiations to bring a night race in 2019 to a circuit in Weehawken.
The race would be amid a backdrop of river views and the Manhattan skyline.
The news brings back an F1 dream dating back to 2011, when much of the ground work was done to bring a race to the area in 2013 or 2014.
Local politicians were in support of the race, but it never came to fruition.
Since much of the work was done earlier, Sports Rageous reported the race could come to New Jersey as early as next year, but due to race scheduling, it would more likely be slated for 2019.

Ecclestone hits back at ‘stupid idiot’ claims
Ex-Formula 1 owner Bernie Ecclestone has refuted the claim that he made Sepang chief Razlan Razali "look like an idiot" and also revealed he will not be buying the Interlagos circuit.
Razali reacted to Ecclestone's initial admittance that he overcharged circuits for hosting Formula 1, but the former F1 supremo has said he has no involvement in making anyone look stupid.
"Nobody made him look stupid, and it’s difficult to make people look stupid. If they are, they are," said Ecclestone.
"They have done a very good job with the motorcycles, he’s fallen in love with the motorbike racing — and that they apparently make money from.
"With Formula One they don’t make money and what I said was, and we talked about a lot of the promoters, we haven’t been delivering what they bought. Not our fault. We don’t make the show.
"But thankfully now, if Ferrari keep up their job and the other people do the same, we’ll have very good racing and then things should be a lot better for the promoters.
"They should be able to sell tickets."
Ecclestone also said there is "no chance" he will be buying the Interlagos circuit so it can continue to remain on the Formula 1 calendar.
"No chance. Not at all," he added.
"I’ve been trying to (broker a deal) but it’s not easy for anybody there."
"I met the mayor (of Sao Paulo) last time I was there, months ago, and I got him to agree that when it goes out to tender for selling the place that they keep the circuit.
"If the circuit is still there, if you bought it for developing then you’d have to keep the racetrack and find someone who was going to run the race or be the promoter."
