Haas protests Force India over chassis design

Haas has protested Force India ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in regards to the team’s use of a car that a previous entrant built.

Force India was accepted as a new entrant in Formula 1 during the summer after the previous team went into administration, with ‘Racing Point Force India’ purchasing the assets. As a result, the previous Force India team was excluded from the constructors’ championship and the new team only started scoring points from the Belgian Grand Prix onwards.

As part of Force India’s re-entry, the majority of teams agreed to allow the team to inherit the previous entrant’s constructors’ prize money. However, Haas — having not been entitled to certain payments until it had completed three years in F1 as a new entrant — argues the new Force India team should follow the same rules it has had to.

Should Force India not receive the prize money, those funds would be divided up among the remaining teams.

The issue has dragged on since August, and Haas has now protested the legality of both the Force Indias that are due to race in Abu Dhabi, with it understood the protest relates to the car’s IP belonging to the previous entrant and the VJM11 not being built by the new Racing Point Force India itself.

Appendix 6 of the F1 Sporting Regulations states: “A competitor shall, in respect of the Listed Parts to be used in its cars in Formula 1, only use Listed Parts which are designed by it”.

Force India team representatives are required to report to the stewards at on Friday morning at the Yas Marina Circuit in relation to the protest.

Haas declined to comment on Thursday evening in Abu Dhabi, while the FIA will only reveal further details of the matter following a decision from the stewards.

Nije problem što mu je Max dao 4,5s nego što je od Strolla dobio 1,5s. Jbg...

Lewis Hamilton is displaying a number one on his car this weekend but is still officially entered as number 44, Mercedes has confirmed.

The Mercedes driver has used number 44 every since since drivers were given the option of choosing career numbers in 2014.

Formula 1 rules state “each car will carry the race number of its driver as published by the FIA at the beginning of the season” and it must be “clearly visible from the front of the car and on the driver’s crash helmet.”

Hamilton is officially entered as car number 44 on the FIA entry list and that number is displayed on the sides of his car. However the number one is displayed on its nose.

“It is car 44 on the entry list and timing screens and races under this number – the number is still present on the engine cover,” Mercedes confirmed in a statement.

“But Lewis has requested and been given permission to run the number one on those nose at this final race of the season because he’s world champion.”

:ajme: Oce kaki nece kaki.

A decision on the Haas protest against Force India at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has been delayed until Saturday at the earliest.

Haas lodged a protest against the two Force India cars on Thursday evening, with the case understood to be relating to the fact the cars were designed and built by the previous Force India team, which went into administration in the summer and was excluded from the championship. A new entrant — Racing Point Force India — took its place, but the majority of teams agreed to allow it to keep the constructors’ championship prize money the former team was entitled to.

Unhappy with the situation, having had to wait for prize money as a new entrant itself, Haas lodged the protest and presented a number of documents as evidence, which initially led to the hearing being adjourned until Friday afternoon in Abu Dhabi, and now a decision has been further delayed.

“A substantial amount of written evidence was submitted and each party made extensive verbal representation,” the stewards stated. “The stewards are deliberating on the matter.

“It is anticipated that a decision will not be handed down any earlier than just prior to Free Practice 3.”

FP3 takes place at 2 p.m. local time at the Yas Marina Circuit, with qualifying at 5 p.m.

Force India team principal Otmar Szafnauer admitted earlier on Friday that he hadn’t been expecting such a protest, despite the prize money issue having dragged on since the Belgian Grand Prix in August.

“Well, after the protest was lodged it wasn’t a surprise at all,” Szafnauer said. “But just before that we weren’t expecting it really, so a bit of a surprise, but in a way it’s good that all of the information can be presented to the stewards and in due course I think they’ll make a very informed decision.”

Haas team principal Guenther Steiner says the basis of the protest against Force India is to set a precedent and ensure all teams are treated equally.

On Thursday, Haas lodged a protest against the two Force India cars at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, with no official reason provided by the race stewards. With a decision coming no earlier than Saturday, Steiner (pictured above) declined to give details of the protest on Friday evening but says Haas wants to ensure all teams are treated the same way in Formula 1.

“What we are seeking is equality for all the teams,” Steiner said. “We came in under certain circumstances into Formula 1, we were aware of what we had to do, we did it all, and we feel that this was not done this time with Force India. So we are just seeking equality or at least an explanation why it isn’t done.

“The problem is maybe bigger than Force India, but we are just seeking that everybody is treated equally. We are not trying to get more. We are just trying to make sure that everybody in this position in the future knows what he’s going to do.

“You set a precedent with this one, so you need to sort the precedent out so the future is not painted.”

It is understood that the protest relates to the prize money that Force India is set to receive from F1 for the team’s previous performances in the sport, despite officially being accepted as a new entry at the Belgian Grand Prix after the previous entrant went into administration. The way the commercial agreements are structured, Haas was not entitled to certain payments at the start of its time in F1 as a new entrant.

Although many teams agreed to allow the ‘new’ Force India to receive the money back in August after jobs were saved, Steiner — who argues Haas also created jobs by entering the sport — admits his team was always unhappy with the situation but didn’t want to resort to any official protest until it absolutely had to.

“I think we weren’t ready (in Spa) and we tried to mediate and find an amicable solution but we didn’t get either a good or bad answer — we didn’t get any answer. So at a certain point you need to do what you need to do.”

Steiner insists team owner Gene Haas is not after more money by lodging the protest, but wants Force India — as a new entrant — to be treated the same as Haas was when it first came into the sport.

“Haas abided by the rules and did what needed to be done, so he’s just trying to make it equal for everybody. It isn’t a crusade, he doesn’t want more, he’s just saying, ‘Hey, we did this, I knew I was going to do this, I was happy to do it, and it’s the same for everybody.’”
