Ejbitibul preti Palmeru.

Abiteboul admits Palmer future not secure

Cyril Abiteboul has admitted Jolyon Palmer's F1 future is not secure.

Briton Palmer has struggled for form and results in the opening quarter of his second season with the French marque, while team newcomer Nico Hulkenberg has shone.

Boss Abiteboul told the French-language agency AFP: "We need two drivers who are able to score points.

"We're doing what's right for Jolyon to get him through this difficult phase," the Frenchman added.

So when asked if a prolonged struggle for Palmer endangers his place at Renault, Abiteboul answered: "We all need to have results.

"Nico shows that the car is able to score points, and Jolyon must also contribute.

"We are extremely supportive and there is no plan, but we are in an ultra-competitive environment and everyone has the pressure of results. For now we give ourselves time to analyse the situation," he added.

Renault rule out major engine upgrade for Baku

Renault Sport Racing Managing Director Cyril Abiteboul has poured cold water on talk of a significant power unit upgrade for the next race in Azerbaijan, saying that the French manufacturer will not introduce a big overhaul until next year.

Speaking to Formula1.com at the Canadian Grand Prix, Abiteboul said that suggestions of a major update for Baku had come from customer team Red Bull, but that it would be wrong for them to expect a ‘magic bullet’ this term, saying only incremental upgrades were in the pipeline.

“It was Red Bull who said that there would be an upgrade [in Baku],” said Abiteboul. “There are upgrades permanently - every single race we are making some small improvements.

“Last year we created a huge expectation and we came with an upgrade that had a big impact. But we can’t repeat that every year.

“Now it is all about constant improvements which overall will make a difference - but there is no magic bullet. Every race the engine will become more and more reliable with the program on the dyno progressing.

“Frankly the next big upgrade will be next year. Then we will have a completely new concept. That will make a difference - but as I said 2018.”

Although official power output figures are not published, Renault are thought to be lagging behind both Mercedes and Ferrari, who also benefit from being able to turn their units up for an extra boost in qualifying.

...Asked about the fact that aero number two, is joining Renault, and whether the move was part of a deal between the two companies, Horner says: "It certainly was no deal.

Renault's design Department on 1 July will get reinforcement in the person of Peter Machin, an aerodynamics specialist who comes from Red Bull Racing. Director Cyril Abiteboul: "He’s with us to fill the position of head of aerodynamics

"In this respect, if the workplace all goes according to plan. We have about twenty percent more manpower for the chassis area. The factory is ready. We are under great pressure to score more points than we do, but we also know that it just takes time.

Alain Prost concedes that while it would be “an honour” to have Fernando Alonso back at Renault, they cannot give him a race-winning car in 2018.

It remains to be seen where Alonso will go next season; the Spaniard linked to a return to Ferrari, a move to Mercedes and a Renault comeback.

The one thing that is certain is that he wants a race-winning car and that, Prost says, Renault may not be able to deliver.

“I think there are a lot of top drivers…” the Frenchman began in an interview with Nextgen-Auto.com.

“We are a works team so it is true that there are quite a few drivers who consider that, maybe not tomorrow, but that after tomorrow we are going to be a very good team.

“In the case of Fernando… he was a World Champion with Renault more than 10 years ago so of course it would be an honour to have him.

“But, on the other hand, we know he wants to win right away and I don’t think we can give him a car to win right away.

“It is therefore a difficult problem to resolve.”

As for Robert Kubica, who will take part in a second test with Renault, Prost admits nothing has been decided regarding his future.

Prost added: “Robert has tested for us, and he will do another test session again but for now, we really can’t comment further. It’s very difficult to judge what may be possible or not.”

SAINZ SET TO REPLACE PALMER AT RENAULT IN HUNGARY AS RED BULL SEVER TIES - REPORT

Red Bull Racing has reportedly severed ties with its driver, Carlos Sainz Jr, and the Spaniard is no longer involved in the future of the Austrian team. This is according Germany's Auto Bild after Sainz has criticized Red Bull and Toro Rosso in recent weeks in a number of different interviews.

With Red Bull reportedly severing connections with Sainz, the team will let the driver move to Renault, despite holding a contract with Toro Rosso for the Hungarian Grand Prix. Currently, Renault's Managing Director, Cyril Abiteboul, and Red Bull's Dr Helmut Marko are negotiating a deal to get Sainz out of his Toro Rosso contract, although the Enstone-based team would have to raise an expected $8 million.

If Renault are able to raise this amount of money, Sainz would replace Jolyon Palmer at Renault for the Hungarian Grand Prix to partner Nico Hulkenberg, while Red Bull Junior Pierre Gasly would replace Sainz at Toro Rosso.

"If a driver does not want to stay, if the love is extinguished, you can not force a contract with contracts, you should let go," said Red Bull CEO Dietrich Mateschitz when talking to Auto Bild at the Austrian Grand Prix last week.
