Order up: Entrants place deposit for aero kits

By Dave Lewandowski
Published: Nov 11, 2014

Order up.

Verizon IndyCar Series entrants have submitted a 25 percent deposit of the $75,000 package price with their aerodynamic bodywork kit order to respective suppliers Chevrolet and Honda.

Manufacturer track testing of prototype components opened Oct. 6 and continues through Jan. 18, 2015, which is the same date as homologation. Production will ramp up to meet the March 1 deadline for one road and street course/short oval kit to be delivered to each entrant. The speedway aero kit, according to the INDYCAR timeline, will be delivered by April 1. The balance of the package cost is due before delivery.

The initial team on-track test is scheduled for March 16-17 at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala., and the road/street course package will make its competition debut March 27-29 in the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. The 99th Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race on May 24 will mark the debut of the speedway aero kit.

“The manufacturers will give them a good product and I don’t think it will take long for (teams) to get their heads around it and have good racing at St. Pete,” said Derrick Walker, INDYCAR’s president of competition and operations. “It will be an exciting start to the season.”

Six ovals, five street circuits and six road courses constitute the 2015 schedule, which begins March 8 in Brasilia, Brazil, and concludes Aug. 30 at Sonoma Raceway in California.

The regulated bodywork pieces mated to the Dallara rolling chassis that was introduced for the 2012 season will provide INDYCAR a platform for performance and efficiency developments. The forward-thinking program is relevant to short- and long-term design and development objectives of the global automotive industry and aligns with research and development in multiple technology sectors.

Chevrolet and Honda also supply the consumer-relevant 2.2-liter, twin-turbocharged V6 engines fueled with E85.

“Aero kits will be big performance gains to the competition,” Walker added. “More performance will give us more exciting racing. If you look at the current car, it’s been frozen in time since the design was introduced. When you say to aero manufacturers and designers, ‘OK, you can make changes here. Go at it,’ you’re going to get some different shapes and certainly more performance. Everybody will not just take it on but try to maximize it.

“For the fan, there is a lot more to look at and understand. When you open the door a little bit and take some of spec away, you’ll see differences on track, which is the fascinating part."

Four-time Indianapolis 500 winner A.J. Foyt is recovering in a Houston hospital after undergoing successful triple-bypass surgery.

The 79-year-old was admitted to Baylor St Luke's Medical Center with chest pains last Friday, and medical tests revealed blockages in arteries three days later. He is expected to be released from hospital next Monday.

Foyt has endured a number of hospital stays in recent years, many of which stemmed from his 1990 IndyCar accident at Road America. In 2013 he underwent separate back surgeries and hip and knee replacements, and a year earlier received treatment for a life-threatening staph infection following surgery to remove bone spurs from his artificial left knee.

His race team, which is managed by his son Larry, recently announced plans to run a second IndyCar for Briton Jack Hawksworth alongside Takuma Sato in 2015.

Drzi se matori! :)

Ode jos jedna legenda:

AAR engine builder John A. Miller passes

John A. Miller, a longtime engine builder for Dan Gurney's All American Racers team, died Nov. 9. He was 81.

Miller's mechanical inclination and competitiveness led him to motorcycle racing as a young man. His skills brought him to Gurney's AAR team in Santa Ana, Calif., in 1965 where he became served as the team's in-house "engine wizard" until late 1978. Although he was involved with many types of racing, from Formula 1, Can-Am, Trans-Am, and sports cars, Miller's biggest achievements were with Indy cars – he built engines that set many speed records, won the Indianapolis 500 & the USAC championship. Bobby Unser wrote, "John Miller, the best engine builder I ever knew..."

After leaving AAR, Miller developed his own business Precision Auto Machine, where he developed a prototype sleeve valve engine. He had been retired for the last 11 years, enjoying golf and working on many projects on his property in Oregon.

John is survived by his wife Kathy; sons J.J., Jesse, and Robert; daughter Michelle and husband Matt Ferguson; granddaughter Kaylin.

Former GP2 champion Valsecchi gets IndyCar test

Former F1 test driver and GP2 champion Davide Valsecchi will test alongside James Hinchcliffe at Schmidt Peterson in Sebring next month.

PAPHOTO4_522299.jpg

The 2012 GP2 Series champion Davide Valsecchi has announced he will be partaking in his first IndyCar Series test after being given a shot by the Schmidt Peterson team at Sebring.

The Italian, who has maintained a relatively low profile since clinching the F1 feeder category title in 2012, will get his maiden outing in the car on December 16th in Sebring alongside newly-signed James Hinchcliffe.

Valsecchi's appearance at the IndyCar test will be seen as a concerted desire to pursue a career in the United States after his fortunes in Europe stalled in the wake of winning the GP2 Series title. Since that success, Valsecchi spent a year as Lotus' F1 test driver for 2013 – where he was controversially overlooked for a two race stint in favour of Heikki Kovalainen - and has spent 2014 competing in the Spanish-based GT Open.

Jean-Eric Vergne eyes IndyCar switch

“I would be really interest in racing in America in IndyCar; I think it’s a great championship,” he told RACER. “I’m working with a manager who works with a few drivers in America, Julian Jakobi, and at the moment, it seems like it is quite hard to go to a top team right away, but I am very interested to see what type of seats are available.”

A.J. Foyt, who underwent successful triple bypass surgery on his heart November 12, remains in a Houston hospital due to a post-operative complication which has been resolved.

“A.J.’s doing really well,” said Larry Foyt, the youngest son of the four-time Indianapolis 500 winner and the Team Director of his father’s ABC Supply racing team.

“I’d like to thank everyone who sent get well wishes—it means a lot to A.J. and our family. We’re not sure when he will be released because he needs to rest. He’s improving every day and we’re expecting a full recovery.”

It's believed the 79-year-old legend contracted pneumonia following his surgery but doctors were able to cure it.

Rulebook refinements 'to make product better'
By Dave Lewandowski
Published: Dec 2, 2014

Double points awarded May 24 for the 99th Indianapolis 500 Mile Race and the Aug. 30 season finale at Sonoma Raceway are among the sporting and technical regulations that comprise the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series rulebook issued to teams.

The 17-race season begins March 8 in Brasilia, Brazil, and the North American opener March 29 on the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla., will mark the competitive debut of distinctly different aerodynamic bodywork kits supplied by Chevrolet and Honda. Aero kit regulations, including homologation on Jan. 18, 2015, were previously issued to manufacturers by INDYCAR.

“The best thing the sanctioning body can provide competitors, manufacturers and fans is a stable, consistent rulebook, so most of the changes for 2015 are clarifying and tidying up definitions,” INDYCAR president of competition and operations Derrick Walker said. “The rulebook is a work in progress and we always look to refine it to make the product better.”

Will Power of Team Penske clinched the 2014 driver championship at Auto Club Speedway – one of three 500-mile races on superspeedways that awarded double points. The series title has been decided in the final race the past nine years.

Highlights of the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series rulebook:

10.6.2.1. Double Points

Double race finish points are awarded for the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race and the last event of the season.

One-hundred points are awarded to the winner of a double-points race, with the runner-up receiving 80 points and the third-place finisher receiving 70 points. The scale decreases to 10 points for the 25th-place finisher and lower. Bonus points again will be awarded for leading the most race laps (two points) and leading at least one lap (one point). Outside of the Indianapolis 500, an entrant receives one point for earning the Verizon P1 Award. The Indianapolis 500 will rewards all entrants with points in its May 16-17 multi-tiered qualifications, including an additional nine points to the Verizon P1 Award winner.

“We look at the new calendar and analyze how many cars would be in contention for the championship after certain events, and the best trend with multiple cars racing for the championship was weighting it for the final race and the Indy 500, which is a special race deserving of double points,” Walker said.

6.2.1.Test Days

The 2015 testing days will be made up of the following: Engine Manufacturer Tests, Team Tests, Promoter Tests, and Full Size Wind Tunnel Tests.

Teams will be charged four days from their 14-day test allocation for Promoter Days (formerly known as Open Tests) at Barber Motorsports Park (March 16-17, for the introduction of Chevrolet and Honda street/road course aero kits), St. Petersburg (March 27), NOLA Motorsports Park (April 10), the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval (May 3), the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course (May 7), and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course (July 31). The on-track Promoter Day at St. Petersburg, NOLA Motorsports Park, the Indianapolis road course and Mid-Ohio immediately precede the race event weekends.

“We see these days, working with the promoters, as a way fans can see the stars and cars in ways that aren’t available during the race weekend,” Walker said. “It will be a less formal day for the teams and drivers with long on-track sessions. Also, when you look at the schedule, there aren’t too many days that teams can test with the arrival of aero kits. We picked a nominal amount of dates to start to create value and cost-savings for teams.”

On-track testing is not permitted within seven before the start of on-track activity at a race location with the exception of the period March 9-25. Team testing blackout dates include Dec. 22-Jan. 4, 2015; Jan. 27-30; May 4-25.

7.4.1.1. Pit Selection, non-Indy 500 Events

If an entrant did not participate at the prior race location, it shall be assigned a pit location as follows: 1) Entrant points, 2) Blind draw.

Qualifying will continue to set the pit lane assignment for the following event, but rule 7.4.1.1 addresses changing drivers between events, such as Ed Carpenter and Mike Conway with Ed Carpenter Racing in 2014. When Conway, who drove 12 road/street course races in the No. 20 entry, yielded to Carpenter for an oval race (and vice versa), the No. 20 car was assigned the last pit stall from pit out. Under the new rule, the driver will retain their qualifying position from the previous event.

For the first race of the season, pit locations shall be assigned based upon 2014 final entrant point standings. Entrants without points shall be assigned by the date that entry was received.

8.3.2.2. Road/Street Course Qualifying

Qualifications groups shall be determined by the practice session prior to qualifying.

Groups for Segment One of the three-segment road/street course qualifications will be set by lap times in the latest on-track session. The rule corresponds to the Promoter Day at St. Petersburg, NOLA Motorsports Park, the Indianapolis road course and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course that immediately precede the race event weekends. The sessions on the extra day at each venue will not be used in determining Segment One groups.

To determine Segment One, INDYCAR shall rank the cars in order of time, with the driver posting the best time ranking appearing in the first position and continuing through the rest of the field in order of increasing time. The driver with the best time ranking shall determine the groups and notify INDYCAR of his/her decision within 30 minutes following the conclusion of the practice session that determines the qualifications groups.

4.3.8.3. Rookie Orientation Test Phases

In addition to car control, placement and a consistent driving pattern, the rookie orientation test shall consist of three phases, totaling 40 laps.

Each of the speed phases of the Rookie Orientation Program for the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race has been increased 5 mph.  Phase One of 10 laps at 205-210 mph, Phase Two of 15 laps at 210-215mph and Phase Three of 15 laps at 215+ mph. The laps do not have to be consecutive. The phases and corresponding speeds may be adjusted based on track/weather conditions.

Correspondingly, the Indianapolis 500 refresher test for drivers will consist of 30 total laps (the second and third phases of the ROP).

No standing starts for 2015

Standing starts, which were introduced in 2013 at Toronto and utilized at Long Beach, Indianapolis road course, Houston 1 and Toronto 2 in 2014, have been eliminated for the 2015 season.

“Most of the tracks we run on, few meet the space criteria for our cars, which are bigger than most formula cars,” Walker said, “and there is some development needed with the launch. I wouldn’t say it’s out of the picture for the future. We know the fans enjoy it, and we love it, too.”

Bzvz.
