Mercedes reveals 2014 Formula 1 engine

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the first images of the 2014 Formula 1 power unit that it believes will put the 'motor back in motorsport'.

As dyno testing of its new V6 1.6-litre turbo charged unit continues at its Brixworth facility, Mercedes says early indications from its work are pointing towards an exciting era for grand prix racing once the 2014 rules come into force.

Andy Cowell, managing director of Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines, dismissed fears that the new power units would not deliver as exciting a sound as the current V8 engines, and predicted thrills for fans and challenges for drivers.

"The engines are going to be loud, but I think sweet sounding," he said on Friday. "The frequency will be higher and, with the turbocharger running at 125,000rpm, they will be loud. When you are stood next to it on the dyno it is not quiet and you need ear defenders.

"There will be a new quality to the racing too. It will edge towards a thinking drivers' formula to get the most from the car and the available fuel energy.

"The engines will also deliver much more torque - especially on the exit of the corners. Cars with more power than grip coming out of the corners - that is something that we all enjoy.

"They will also put F1 back at the cutting edge of new technology - which is what the fans want."

Red Bull chief technical officer Adrian Newey suggested last year that the power units would become the critical factor in deciding the outcome of the 2014 championship.

Cowell believed it was too early to be specific about the impact the engines will have, but was confident that the importance of the engine manufacturer would be greater than it was now, a move he welcomed.

"We are putting the motor back in motorsport, but to what extent we will only know in 2014," he said. "It will definitely have more of an influence."

The new power units will produce the same 750hp figure of the current engines but a larger percentage of that will come from Energy Recovery Systems.

The current KERS currently produces 80hp for 6.7 seconds per lap, while the new ERS will deliver 161 hp for 33.3 seconds per lap.

Cowell said: "Today it is difficult to be quick without KERS - for 2014 it will be impossible to go racing without ERS."

Renault has unveiled the first images of the new V6 turbo engine that it believes will help attract fans back to Formula 1.

The new 1.6-litre turbocharged unit has already run extensively on the dyno at Renault's Viry-Chatillon facilities, but will not have its track debut until the start of next year.

Renault Sport's F1 chief Jean-Michel Jalinier believes that the move to more economical, technologically advanced engines will prove to be a big boost for both car makers and the sport itself.

"It will be a better tool to communicate than the current V8 engine," he explained.

"We can get some fans back to F1."

 

Renault's engine technical director Rob White also believes that the new power-units will provide a good spectacle as well as being more relevant than the current V8 engines.

"F1 is still going to be very loud, it is still going to be a very violent event," he said.

"You can see on the test bed that even with relatively slow shifts on a relatively low transient dyno, that gear shifts are rapid and violent.

"And the big glowing red thing at the back of the engine in front of the gearbox [the Energy Recovery System] is also going to be a thing of some spectacle."

Renault eager to supply engines to fewer teams in Formula 1

 

Renault is eager to reduce the number of customer teams it supplies in Formula 1, dismissing talk that it could provide engines to half the grid.

Amid uncertainty about the engine plans for a number of teams for the switch to V6 turbo engines in 2014, Renault said on Monday that it was keen not to spread its supply too thinly.

The French car manufacturer is already supplying power units to Lotus, Red Bull, Williams and Caterham, while Scuderia Toro Rosso is expected to join it for 2014.

With Mercedes hoping to stick to just three teams for 2014, and Ferrari not wishing to expand its supply too much, there has been speculation that Renault could even add Marussia to its roster if the Banbury outfit needs a deal.

However, speaking at Renault's F1 engine base at Viry-Chatillon in France on Monday, its engine chief Jean-Michel Jalinier made it clear that the company's ideal situation was actually to supply fewer teams.

"Definitely not six," he said, when asked by AUTOSPORT about how many outfits Renault would be supplying in the future.

"Five might be an option but really a maximum because we want to deliver a good service.

"To me, five should be really a max and, if we go back from four to three, I will be happy.

"We were very comfortable with three [teams] in terms of assistance and doing our job properly."

 

F1 costs a concern for Renault

Jalinier says it is too early to provide teams with a figure for how much a 2014 engine deal will cost, although initial estimates suggest it will be 5 million Euro more than present.

"I can't give you a round figure because today I don't know the cost of the engine," he explained.

"But the rough figures today are, and you know it depends on the team and marketing rights, that a season costs 15 million Euro. That is 10 million Euro for a conventional engine, and 5 million Euro for KERS and support.

"The cost of a season in 2014 will be more in the vicinity of 20 million Euro in total, rather than 15 million Euro. These are the rough figures. This is what I am communicating with the potential partners."

While a number of F1 teams have expressed concern about the impact of a ramp-up of engine costs for 2014, Jalinier admitted that he too was worried about the financial state of the sport.

"We are very concerned with the current situation in F1 and we all know the situation is not good," he said.

"Today, apart from maybe three teams, there is no team comfortable with their budget, so we need to be careful of what we can do with their teams..."

Jalinier even suggested that it was important that Renault had a say in F1's future rules, because of its expenditure.

"Now Renault is investing all together with four teams, so we have the budget of a mid grid team," he said.

"We are the same size as a mid-grid team, so we should have the voice of a mid-grid team. We are working with FOM and the FIA on that..."

The general feeling was the first company to come in will be Honda, but that Porsche will probably follow, depending on the political situation within the sport. There could well be others.There have been rumours for some weeks that Gilles Simon, the man who formulated the new regulations and then went to work for the now-defunct PURE engine project, has moved to England and is already at work on a new project, with the speculation suggesting that this could be Honda, as the company has based its F1 activities there before.

Jalinier also said that Renault is paying close attention to the new Formula E and said that some of the Renault engineers were involved in helping the new series.

'Force, nemo' se sekiraš više oko zvuka. Mogu da se kladim da će zvuk biti još bolji, jer će se opet pored "vrištavog tenora" čuti ona potmuli, "baritonski" ropac pri međugasu iz 3. u 2. u nekoj ukosnici koje nam je tako velikodušno podario her Tilke. Eto bar neke koristi od toga...

Ja sam gledao uživo stare turbaljke od 1500 kubika uživo i to je zvučalo ludilo.

u jbt.....da nisu ovi iz Renaulta skoknuli do kolega iz teretnog programa pa pozajmili jednu "da nesto probaju" ? :) Pitanje za inzinjere na forumu: koji ce im ovoliki turbo  kada je pritisak ogranicen? Zar velika turbina nema i poveci spool up?

Džoni, ne mešaj pritisak i količinu usisanog vazduha. Stvar je vrlo prosta, na 15000 o/min potreba za vazduhom je poprilična. Fizički je neophodna turbina većih dimenzija da obezedi toliku količinu usisanog vazduha.

Lupam glavu već dva dana koji je tip turbine, westgate ili vtg. čak mi se učinilo da je u pitanju i tkzv. spiralna turbina.

Potrebno mi je još par informacija koje "žickam" sa, neću reći kog mesta, da bih na Tehnici prozborili koju o tome.

Čisto poređenja radi, evo kako izgleda jedna kamionska turbina. U pitanju je motor kamiona Mercedes Actros MP2.

A da se kladimo da će "slučajno" generator postajati elektro motor kad mu se promeni polaritet kako bi po potrebi "okretao" kompresorsko kolo dodatno i boost-ovao motor baš kad ustreba...

 

 

Italian electronic company Magneti Marelli used the paddock of Autodromo di Monza last weekend to reveal some of their new hardware destined to run the new 1600cm3, V6 turbo engines in 2014.

Magneti Marelli engineers started by showing their new ERS system -- an engine boost coming from the recovery of kinetic energy during braking associated with the energy coming from exhaust gases, both aimed at feeding the electrical motor-generators hooked up to the engine shaft).

Then, they unviled their new fuel systems (injectors and pumps for GDI engines with fuel pressure of up to 500 bar) as well as their two-way WI-FI systems for data transmission from vehicle to infrastructure (i.e., exchange of a much larger set of data and of different types of signals between machine and pit).

In their press release, Magneti Marelli writes that the technology and methods used in developing the KERS system are a source of solutions and technological spin-offs for systems and components aimed at mass-produced hybrid and electric engines (moto-generators, electronic control systems, inverters, battery control, etc.).

Auh prika kakav članak. Ne sećam se da skoro sa toliko uživanja nešto pročitao. Ovde ima materijala za "razigravanje" ideja koliko hoćeš.

Mnogo mi je bilo drago da što su se odlučili za koncepciju sa WESTGATE turbinom. Kakvog će tu zviždanja biti pred krivinama kad sistem počne da rasterećuje turbinu. :wub:

 

Retko imam običaj da se "puvam", ali ovo sam "utrefio" samo dva posta iznad:

 

 

A second valuable function of it is to drive the (big) turbo after a period of braking, thereby avoiding the phenomenon of lag (which can last several seconds) before the torque ‘requested’ by the driver is delivered by the (small) V6 engine.

 

Dakle, generator struje koji je "nakačen" na turbinsko kolo koje pokreću izduvni gasovi eliminisaće turbo rupu koju imaju turbine sa fiksnim perajama na niskim obrtajima kada je količina izduvnih gasova mala. Što znači da će na manjim obrtajima motor i dalje imati "daha".

Pored toga će ovja generator/elektor motor zvani MGU-H dodavat energijui sitemu MGU-K, tj pomagati ERS-K sistemu.

Koncepcijski jednsotavno, energetski izuzetno, a za serijske proizvođače mega primamljivo.

 

Benzinski motori će se ponovo na velika vrata vratiti u serijske automobile.
