The EU crumbles, Russia crumbles, is it the time for Central-Eastern Europe to start relying on itself?

Little known in Serbia, Belarusian and Polish blogospheres have recently witnessed an interesting discussion about creation of a Confederation of Poland and Belarus inspired by the First Republic (a medieval Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth). Surely, the current political climate in both countries does not imply immediate implementation of this idea. What was surprising, was the big amount of positive reaction of ordinary people from both sides.

Selected history of the discussion:

Examples of Belarusian articles:
1) A Referendum on the Polish-Belarusian Confederation (in Russian)
2) Rzeczpospolita? (in English)
3) The United States of Intermarium (in English)
4) How the Belarusians can escape Russia (in Russian)

Examples of Polish responses:
1) A Belarusian-Polish Confederation. But how? (in Polish)
2) The Belarusians who want confederation with Poland (in Polish)
3) Like the Great First Republic (in Polish)
4) Can the Latin Civilization save Belarus (in Polish)

However, this conversation has raised a further topic - is there any reason for a broader coalition of Eastern European states - something that is known in the academic literature as Intermarium. Intermarium means lands between three seas: Baltic, Adriatic, and Black. The topic has already gained some hot discussions in Ukraine.

Perhaps today it can only be a cultural phenomenon, a way of a regional self-identification - we, the Intermarians. But in the future - who knows, cooperation between those states could go further, stretching as far as a joint foreign, and defense policies? Such a confederation could be a true global leader, capable of addressing much higher tasks then just achieving "good life" - things like new-age infrastructure, space flights, nuclear energy, be at par with global players like the USA, China, Germany, the UK.

Because we have some beautiful region, it truly deserves a higher role than it has now:
