Ovog vikenda pocinje i Indikar sezona ulicnom trkom u Sent Pitersburgu na Floridi.

Sa promenom na celu Indikar operacije deluje kao da se kriza u kojoj se naslo ovo nekada elitno americko takmicenje polako prevazilazi. Polako se pokrecu neke stvari sa mrtve tacke, ove godine se i vozacka konkurencija znacajno pojacala, ispalo je nekoliko turista-placenika poput nesretne Milke Duno da bi na njihovo mesto dosla neka mnogo ozbiljnija imena. Takodje, deluje kao da se polako vracaju i sponzori uprkos tome sto Ameriku jos uvek itekako drma finansijska kriza, nakon prosle sezone kad ni Penski nije mogao da obezbedi sponzorstvo za sve svoje bolide sada situacija deluje mnogo bolje.

Ovo je poslednja sezona kombinacije Dalara/Honda/Fajerston, od sledece godine cemo gledati novu Dalarinu sasiju za koju ce umesto standardnog aero-paketa istog za sve timovi razvijati sopstvene aero-pakete, a pored Honde ocekuje se ulazak jos nekoliko proizvodjaca motora, za sada au potvrdjeni Sevrolet i Lotus u saradnji s Kosvortom, a govori se jos i o Fordu i Mazdi.

Za ispracaj starih Dalara na zadnjoj trci sezone u Las Vegasu bice ponudjena nagrada od 5 miliona dolara petorici vozaca-gostiju koji se takmice u nekim drugim serijama, za sada nije potvrdjeno ko su kandidati ali se spekulise imenima iz Naskara (Montoja, Robi Gordon), penzionisanim F1 vozacima (Vilnev) i veteranima (neunistivi Mario Andreti).

Kao i prethodnih sezona, glavne favorite treba traziti medju vozacima Penskija i Ganasija, uz Andretijevce kao moguce favorite iz senke. Od vozaca manjih timova moze iznenaditi Dzastin Vilson iz D&R Rejsinga, a tu je i povratnik u Indikar nekadasnji cetvorostruki uzastopni sampion Sebastijan Borde u Dejl Kojn Rejsingu.

Sto se mene tice, ja cu opet navijati za Sato Takuma-sana (KV Lotus) kao i za Simunu De Silvestro (HVM) iako su njihove sanse relativno male u odnosu na glavne favorite. Jednostavno, Penski i Ganasi su toliko ispred svih sto se tice resursa i pripreme bolida da je u startu svaki vozac koji sedne u njihove bolide za oko pola sekunde brzi nego u bolidu nekog od ostalih timova - iako teoretski svi voze iste bolide.

Trka se vozi u 12:30 po lokalnom vremenu (trebalo bi biti 18:30 po CET) a kao i prosle godine trke se mogu pratiti putem interneta na zvanicnoj Indikar stranici.

...beginning with the 2009 season, Versus began televising the races which will air for the next 10 years, televising at least 13 races per season. ABC will continue to broadcast the Indianapolis 500 until 2012, as well as four additional races. Versus began airing one hour pre-race shows the day before a given race.

In the UK, the IndyCar Series races have all their broadcasts on the Sky Sports family of networks. The viewing figures of the IndyCar races in the UK outnumber that of the NASCAR races which are also broadcast on Sky Sports. The IndyCar Series also has had highlights of all the races on the channel Five British terrestrial channel and Five USA, but has since been discontinued for the 2010 season.

Power takes St Petersburg pole

Will Power started his 2011 IndyCar title bid with another commanding street course pole position in St Petersburg.

The 2010 series runner-up had been quickest in two out of three practice sessions, and after his Penske team-mate Ryan Briscoe and Ganassi's Scott Dixon briefly held provisional pole in the 'fast six' final session, Power produced the fastest lap of the weekend to take pole with a 1m01.962s.

Two Ganassi cars will chase Power off the start, with champion Dario Franchitti shrugging off a morning practice crash to get closest to the Australian with a lap 0.3328 seconds away from pole and 0.1s ahead of team-mate Dixon.

Mike Conway could not quite repeat his top three form from practice, but fourth on his debut with Andretti Autosport and his first event back since his ferocious Indianapolis 500 crash was still a tremendous result.

Briscoe and Dreyer & Reinbold's Justin Wilson were the other drivers to make it through to the final session and will line up on row three.

Marco Andretti (Andretti Autosport) narrowly missed out on a spot in the pole shoot-out and will share row four with Tony Kanaan, whose contribution to the Andretti team he criticised in a Racer blog earlier this week. Kanaan was delighted to start his KV deal with eighth place, three positions ahead of team-mate Takuma Sato. KV's third driver EJ Viso only qualified 21st but at least completed a session without incident for the first time this weekend.

Sam Schmidt Motorsports' return to IndyCar got off to a great start as Alex Tagliani qualified 10th, just behind Penske's Helio Castroneves.

Vitor Meira came close to pulling off a surprise top-12 position for AJ Foyt's team, on a weekend when its legendary boss is absent while recovering from having a stent inserted to clear a blocked artery earlier this week. Meira was edged outside the group one cut-off by a late improvement from Andretti, so starts 13th.

Friday morning pacesetter Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti) surprisingly failed to get beyond the group stages and lines up 14th, ahead of Newman/Haas' Oriol Servia - another man whose practice form suggested he was on course for the top 12, only to fail to get a clean lap in during early qualifying.

The group two session ended with a massive accident for Conquest's Sebastian Saavedra after the Colombian misunderstood a marshal's instruction and exited the pits into the path of Sebastien Bourdais' Dale Coyne car. Contact between the two sent Saavedra heavily into the wall, ruling out Conquest's primary chassis for the weekend. Both drivers were unhurt.

Bourdais crashes heavily in warm-up

Sebastien Bourdais faces a race against time to make the start of his first race back in the IndyCar Series after crashing heavily in the morning warm-up in St Petersburg.

Although the Frenchman was unhurt, his Dale Coyne Racing Dallara-Honda sustained heavy damage in the accident at the track's fast chicane, which ended with the car on fire.

"I just nipped the wall on the inside of the fast chicane's right-hander and it broke the right-front suspension straight away and from there I was just a passenger," Bourdais told IMS Radio.

"The thing just slid over the rumble strips and hit the wall pretty hard, because this is a fast area. It's a really big mistake. There's definitely a lot of damage."

Adding to Coyne's problems, Bourdais' team-mates James Jakes had a substantial crash elsewhere on the circuit at almost the same time, leaving the team with two cars to rebuild. It has a supply of spare parts but no fully-prepared back-up machine.

The race starts at 1pm local time.

Conquest Racing's Sebastian Saavedra looks set to make the race after his massive qualifying crash. The Colombian has now taken to the track in the team's spare car.

Ryan Briscoe (Penske) was fastest in the warm-up session.

Pa s obzirom da brani sampionsku titulu Frankiti i jeste jedan od favorita. Mada ne smemo zaboraviti ni Pauera koji je bio vicesampion prosle sezone a imao najbolje rezultate od svih na "regularnim" (ne-ovalnim) stazama, mislim da je on glavni favorit za pobedu ovde...

Kraj, Frankiti - Pauer - Kanan - De Silvestro - Sato. Dosadna trka, prava uspavanka, Frankiti nedostizan prakticno od starta do cilja. Ceka se odluka sudija o Kananu zbog vrludanja i blokiranja Simone De Silvestro u zadnjim krugovima trke - ako presude da je namerno blokirao sledi mu diskvalifikacija.

Franchitti dominates in St Pete

Dario Franchitti steered clear of a destructive start and went on to dominate the opening round of the IndyCar Series in St Petersburg.

The champion led home his 2010 title rival Will Power at a comfortable distance, with Tony Kanaan starting his new partnership with KV with a very promising third, just ahead of Simona de Silvestro, as the HVM driver took a career-best fourth after her best IndyCar drive yet.

Several frontrunners had immediately been wiped out in a chaotic start, triggered when Helio Castroneves (Penske) nudged the back of Marco Andretti's car under braking for the first corner. Andretti spun into and over Ganassi's Scott Dixon, landing upside down as the tangle also collected his Andretti Autosport team-mate Mike Conway and Penske's Ryan Briscoe, and forced Oriol Servia (Newman/Haas) to come to a halt in avoidance.

The uninjured Andretti and Conway's races were over, while Dixon, Briscoe and Castroneves' cars all needed lengthy repairs.

Detractors of the series' new double-file restart format were then given plenty of ammunition as a string of restart lap incidents followed, causing four yellows inside the first 15 laps. Among the drivers requiring repairs were Ganassi's Graham Rahal, who needed a new rear wing after a clash with Ana Beatriz (Dreyer & Reinbold), and Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti), who was up to fourth until contact in a wild moment triggered by de Silvestro lunging down the inside of the lead pack.

That move paid off for de Silvestro. She had already got up from 17th to seventh, and then surged a further five places in a single dive at the fourth restart. It put de Silvestro second behind Franchitti, and ahead of Kanaan, Justin Wilson (Dreyer & Reinbold), and Power, the polesitter having been elbowed back in two restart traffic jams.

When the race finally started to run smoothly, Franchitti was able to pull away from de Silvestro, who kept Kanaan behind her until the first pitstops, during which Power managed to vault to second ahead of Kanaan and de Silvestro.

But rather than giving chase to Franchitti, Power had to focus on resisting constant attack from Kanaan, with de Silvestro catching back up with them as the race went into its closing stages. As de Silvestro put pressure on Kanaan, Power was able to get away, though Franchitti was uncatchable and won by 7.1s. Kanaan held off de Silvestro for the final podium place by just 0.4s, with the Swiss driver climbing all over the back of the Brazilian in the final laps.

Takuma Sato also scored an IndyCar career best as he took fifth for KV, holding Alex Tagliani, Raphael Matos and Vitor Meira at bay - the Schmidt, AFS and Foyt teams all taking extremely encouraging results as well.

Servia came back from a puncture after a brush with Briscoe and a pit penalty to take ninth ahead of Wilson, who fell back following a puncture and later a spin while chasing Servia, but regained two places on the final lap as JR Hildebrand (Panther) and Danica Patrick (Andretti) tangled ahead of him.

Sebastien Bourdais' eagerly-anticipated return to American racing will have to wait a little longer - the four-time Champ Car champion damaged his Dale Coyne car beyond quick repair in a warm-up accident and missed the race.
