Ovako - totalno laicko sagledavanje svega sto smo videli na ovim testovima, bez ikakvih insajderskih informacija i samo na osnovu 35+ godina pracenja ovog cirkusa:

 

1. Mislim da ce nas Mecka opet sve oprati ove godine i to uglavnom prilicno gadno. Mozda bude par staza na kojima ce pokazati slabosti i pruziti drugima sansu da se umesaju ali ovo sto su radili sa simulacijama trka ne obecava nista lepo.

 

2. Deluje mi da je Ferari za razliku od prosle sezone sada najbrzi u rezimu za kvalifikacije, ali da sada zaostaje na celu duzinu trke za Mercedesom (prosle godine je bilo obrnuto). Opet, sve ce da zavisi koliko kome koja staza bude lezala. Ako Crveni zaista budu jaki subotama, mozda cemo i imati cemu da se nadamo na nedelje. Inace - lagane 1-2 pobede Mercedesa.

 

3. RBR isto deluje brz u konfiguraciji za trku (mozda cak i brzi od Ferarija) ali mi deluju  kao i svi Renoovi timovi slabi na jedan krug. Videcemo da li ce i koliko brzo to biti reseno. Renoovi timovi izgleda imaju i ozbiljnijih problema sa pouzdanoscu (pre svih Meklaren). Prilicno su i blizu jedni drugima, ali RBR ipak ispred ostalih.

 

4. Has deluje dosta dobro, no pitanje je koliko je ovo propaganda (setimo se pre neku godinu Zaubera) a koliko realnost ostaje da se vidi. U svakom slucaju cak i da imaju dobar bolid na pocetku sezone oni nece biti u stanju da isprate razvoj.

 

5. Honda deluje pouzdano mada ne i preterano brzo. Iz STR najavljuju da ce do kraja sezone imati "bolji paket od Meklaren-Renoa" u sta bas i nisam ubedjen. Zivi bili pa videli, tabela nakon Abudabija ce pokazati ko je u pravu.

 

6. Fors deluje slabo, tesko ce ponoviti proslu seznu. Vilijams tu negde gde su i bili, a Zauber i dalje fenjeras.

GPS data shows Ferrari had to save significantly more fuel than Mercedes during Barcelona race simulations, which explains part of the pace gap.

The eight days of testing in Spain came to a close this evening with Ferrari setting the two fastest laps of the tests, with Sebastian Vettel using hyper soft tyres to record a 1m17.182s laps, just ahead of Kimi Raikkonen’s 1m17.221s, also set on hyper soft rubber. The two Ferrari drivers clocked up a total of 863 laps in total.

Third fastest overall was Fernando Alonso’s McLaren-Renault. The Spaniard set a best of 1m17.784s, set on hyper soft rubber. The team had a number of mechanical problems and completed only 599 laps in the testing.

Red Bull Racing was next with Daniel Ricciardo setting the fourth best time overall with a 1m18.047s. The time was set on hyper soft tyres, while the team recorded a total of 783 laps. A good solid result.

Renault was next with a best of 1m18.092s, set by Carlos Sainz, again using hyper soft tyres. The team completed 794 laps.

Team Haas had a good test with Kevin Magnussen recording a 1m18.360s, on super soft rubber. The team did a total of 695 laps.

Toro Rosso Honda had a solid series of tests with Pierre Gasly setting a best of 1m18.363s on hyper soft rubber, while the team did a useful 822 laps, suggesting that reliability problems have been fixed.

Mercedes was obviously keeping its powder dry with Lewis Hamilton setting a best of 1m18.400s, on ultra soft tyres. The team did an impressive 1040 laps in total in the test.

Force India’s Esteban Ocon was the faster of the team’s two drivers with a best of 1m18.967s on the relatively soft tyres, the team completely 711 laps in total. Next in the pecking order was Sauber with Charles Leclerc setting a best lap of 1m19.118s on hyper soft tyres. The team did a total of 785 laps.

At the back was Williams with a best lap by Sergey Sirotkin of 1m19.189s, although this was set on soft tyres. The team completed 734 laps.

Make of all this what you will...

Disraeli and the F1 testing...

Benjamin Disraeli was an interesting character. One of the great statesmen of the Victorian Age, he was not only Prime Minister (on a couple of occasions), he was also a very successful novelist, finding time between cabinet meetings to write works of fiction. Having said that, I suppose it is true to say that a lot of politicians are experts at fiction... Anyway, Disraeli came up with a fabulous saying: "There are three kinds of lies," he said. "Lies, damned lies, and statistics."

Now I am not very good at maths, but over the weekend, when I had a moment to spare, I was playing about with the lap times from the combined Barcelona tests and looking at the lap time differences which Pirelli reckons its tyres are worth. They say that if you switch from Soft to Ultrasoft you will improve by 1.7 secs, and Medium to Ultrasoft would an even bigger leap of 2.5 secs per lap. Further down (or is it up?) the scale, the gap from Ultrasoft to Hypersoft is supposed to be around 0.7 secs. You get the picture?

Using these statistics, one can in theory, calculate the lap time that all the drivers might have done if they had been on Hypersoft tyres. And then one can compare the times to see who is the quickest overall. One cannot, of course, take into account any sandbagging (deliberately not setting the best possible time) or fuel loads (the lighter the fuel load, the faster the car) and all the other variables that we have seen over time in pre-season tests. Nor can you take into account whether one chassis works better with one type of tyres than it does with another compound.

So in reality, such calculation is a bit of a waste of time, but I thought it was nonetheless interesting to adjust the times just to see.

I was rather surprised to discover that my list of tyre-adjusted lap times ened up with the name Kevin Magnussen at the top of the list in his Haas-Ferrari. He set a 1m18.360s using Supersoft tyres. So if you subtract the 1.3 seconds that Pirelli reckons is the difference (Supersoft to Ultrasoft at 0.6 secs and Ultrasoft to Hypersoft at 0.7 secs), you end up with a lap time of 1m17.060s, which is more than a tenth quicker that Sebastian Vettel's best lap on Hypersoft of 1m17.182s.

I shook my head, did the sums again and got the same result. So then I tried Lewis Hamilton. He set a 1m18.400s on Ultrasoft, so subtract the 0.7 secs that one is supposed to gain and that brings his time to 1m17.700s. Eh? That's seven-tenths off Magnussen's best time. Even stranger is the fact that when you go through all the calculations you find that Sergey Sirotkin in the Williams, who set a 1m19.189s lap on soft tyres, would have recorded a 1m17.489s, after the tyre difference was calculated. So he would be fourth fastest overall, behind Magnussen and the two Ferraris, but ahead of Hamilton.

One can extrapolate away frantically, but all it really shows is that either we're in for a hell of a shock when we get to Australia or you cannot take these things seriously. I tend towards the latter explanation because having Haas faster than Ferrari and Mercedes would be remarkable. We'd never be able to stop Gunther Steiner from talking if that happened...

The teams are all busy doing far more complicated calculations, based on all the data they collected in Spain, but even the number-crunchers admit that you don't really know what the numbers mean, unless you know what the teams were doing and so we just have to wait and see what happens when they all line up to go into battle in Q1 in Melbourne.

Over in the US last weekend there was quite an upset when qualifying for the St Petersburg (Florida) IndyCar race saw three rookies qualifying in the top four with former DTM driver Robert Wickens on pole in his Schmidt Peterson car, ahead of Penske's Will Power and then Matheus Leist (AJ Foyt Enterprises) and Jordan King (Ed Carpenter Racing). In this case the weather played a role but in the race Wickens was leading in the closing laps when he tangled with Alex Rossi as the American tried to take the lead, letting Sebastien Bourdais through to win the race with Graham Rahal second and Rossi third. All good stuff.

Somehow I am not so sure that we will such an upset in Albert Park, although I know a bunch of Vikings who would be over the moon if Kevin did stick it on pole position...

Verstappen tops day one of in-season test in Barcelona

Max Verstappen was fastest on a smooth opening day of in-season testing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya as Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton were also in action.

On the first of two days of testing following Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix, the Red Bull set the pace with a 1m17.528s on the hypersoft compound tire – that will be used for the first time in a race at the next grand prix in Monaco – and totaled 148 laps.

Carlos Sainz was second and also on the hypersoft for his best lap, ending up just 0.034s adrift of Verstappen and less than 0.1s clear of Sebastian Vettel for Ferrari. Vettel’s focus was on the soft and medium compound tires that had been used during last weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix, with the German saying Ferrari would be “more than blind” if it didn’t look into the reasons for its relative lack of pace in the race.

Vettel notably suffered blistering on his left-front tire during long runs as he carried out back-to-back comparisons with the old specification Pirelli tires and the thinner tread introduced this weekend to avoid such a scenario.

Romain Grosjean had a more productive day than on Sunday as he completed 129 laps and set the fourth-fastest time having not even made it beyond Turn 3 two days ago. The Frenchman set a 1m18.449s – just 0.6s off his qualifying time at the weekend – and ended up 0.081s clear of Nicolas Latifi in the Force India.

Latifi was making his first outing for the team in current F1 machinery after having to cancel a planned appearance in pre-season due to illness, and impressed with his lap time, albeit using the hypersofts. His lap was enough to pip Lewis Hamilton near the end of the session, as the championship leader was sixth overall and completed the most mileage with 151 laps.

The Mercedes caught the eye from the start of running as it was running updated rain lights on the edge of the rear wing, with the higher positioning designed to help improve visibility for the following driver. The test – for he FIA’s benefit – is with 2019 in mind.

There was an interruption late in the session as Antonio Giovinazzi stopped in the final sector with 15 minutes remaining in a classic sign of a fuel run-out test, with teams having struggled for mileage to complete such a test during pre-season due to the weather.

Giovinazzi was making his first appearance in the 2018 Sauber after racing for the team twice last year, and he ended up eighth quickest, one position ahead of Williams debutant Oliver Rowland who was impressively consistent in finishing ninth with 121 laps to his name.

There were two McLarens and two Force Indias running on Tuesday, with one of each carrying out tire testing for Pirelli. Lando Norris and Oliver Turvey split the tire testing duties in the McLaren while it was George Russell who was Force India’s nominated driver.

F2 championship leader Norris ended up 10th overall after completing 76 laps before he will take over the main McLaren on Wednesday, while Russell was one position lower in 11th and amassed 123 laps.

The hard tire compound was seen on both cars, with their tire program an explanation for the lowly positions in the standings for both cars, with Turvey propping up the timing screens.

Just above Turvey was Sean Gelael in the Toro Rosso, with the team completing by far the lowest mileage as it added just five laps in the afternoon session to the 45 it did by 1:00 p.m. local time. Chassis-related issues were to blame, with Toro Rosso tweeting that a precautionary power unit change was required as a result, but Gelael at least emerged in the final few minutes for some short late running.
