Uzasno sam razocaran

McLaren upgrades not enough to fight top teams yet – Alonso
2018 Spanish Grand Prix

14th May 2018, 11:52
Dieter Rencken and Keith Collantine

Fernando Alonso says the upgrades McLaren brought to the Spanish Grand Prix aren’t enough for them to start fighting the top teams yet.

A distinctive new nose design was part of a package of upgrades McLaren brought for last weekend’s race. However Alonso said the team’s ambitions are confined to the midfield for now.

“We knew that the upgrades put ourselves in a better position in the midfield pack,” said Alonso. “I think we catch up with Renault and probably with Haas as well.

“But the top three teams, they’re still developing the car at the same rate we do and we keep that gap, unfortunately.”

McLaren fell to fifth behind Renault in the constructors’ championship last weekend. Alonso expects a difficult fight with them over the rest of the season.

“I think it’s going to be tough,” he said. “We did a good step here. We were eight-tenths behind Renault in Baku, nine-tenths behind Renault in China. And here we were the same in qualifying and quite the same in the race.

“So we did a step forward but we know that it’s going to be a big battle until the end and it’s important to score points every race.”

Alonso admitted he thought his points-scoring streak was going to end after the first lap in yesterday’s race.

“We started with the softer tyre because [in] qualifying two we did with a red tyre. The aim was to gain positions in the first couple of laps and then stop very early because we had the softer tyre.

“But we lost positions on the first lap with the incident in turn two. We found ourselves in a very difficult position in lap two, lap three, and I thought it was impossible to get the points.

“Luckily we had a good race, we keep scoring points, five consecutive races in the points, that’s what we wanted and I’m really happy right now.”

Možda tu negde peta, ako i to, najbolja sigurno nije.

McLaren receives £200 million cash injection from company linked to F2 driver Latifi
2018 F1 season

19th May 2018, 15:14
Dieter Rencken and Keith Collantine

McLaren Group, the holding company for McLaren Racing and McLaren Automotive after the company’s restructure in the wake of the departure of former dual shareholder Ron Dennis, has received a capital injection of £203.8m, made by Nidala (BVI) Limited to purchase 888,135 ordinary shares in the Group.

A McLaren spokesperson would not disclose the shareholders of the British Virgin Isles-based entity, saying, “We aren’t at liberty to disclose details of the investor. This is, as you will know, not uncommon practice.”

However, RaceFans understands that Michael Latifi, CEO of major Canadian food conglomerate Sofina and father of F2 racer and current Force India driver Nicholas Latifi, has interests in Nidala.

Nidala is thought to stand for Nicholas Daniel Latifi. The McLaren spokesperson also did not comment on whether a drive for the 22-year-old is a condition of the investment.

During a briefing in Barcelona, McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown told journalists that McLaren was financially secure, saying “Our shareholders have been in the sport a long time. They completely understand the sport.

“If you look at the sponsorship that’s come in to Formula 1 teams this year we’ve brought in more new partners than anyone else. They’re patient, understanding, know the sport. We all want to bring in as many sponsor partners as possible, but they also know it’s not that easy.

“They give us what we need to go racing. They continue to invest in the racing team. So the more we bring in the more we can get. But we’re not strapped for money.”

Although McLaren currently lacks a headline partner and the flanks of its cars are bare, the team sports an allegiance with Kimoa, the clothing brand created by driver Fernando Alonso.

All about the Latifis

jm1827ap446.jpg

By: Joe Saward

As reported in today's JSBM newsletter, McLaren has now confirmed that its new investor, who has acquired 10 percent of the holding company, is Michael Latifi. The deal values the McLaren empire at $2.75 billion. This will greatly improve the McLaren balance sheet, as the firm took on debt to finance the purchase of the shares previously owned by Ron Dennis.

“This injection of capital is a vote of confidence in our future strategy and the group remains as focused as ever in positioning for growth," says executive chairman Shaikh Mohammed bin Essa Al Khalifa.

The company that acquired the shares is called Nidala, which is a diminutive of NIcholas DAniel LAtifi, Michael's son, who currently races Formula 2 with the DAMS team and has ambitions to become a Formula 1 driver in the future. Michael and his wife Marilena are regularly in the F1 paddock and have been spending a great deal of time with McLaren in recent months. Having said that, it has been known for some time that Michael Latifi was looking to invest in a racing team, not in order to ease his son's path to Formula 1, but simply because he sees it as a good investment at the moment. This is presumably based on the belief that the F1 "franchises" will be worth a lot more money once the new commercial arrangements are agreed for 2021 and beyond. This will definitely be the case if there is a budget cap and if the OTT television streaming delivers the revenues that it is expected to deliver.

Being involved in an F1 team could help Nicholas Latifi find a drive in F1, as McLaren may be able to deliver technological help to smaller teams, as it used to do with Force India, however, he has a lot to do to prove that he is worthy of an F1 drive. This is his third full season in F2 (or GP2). He finished 16th in 2016 and fifth last year, with a string of podium finishes and a Sprint Race win. Thus far in 2018 has been overshadowed by his team-mate Alexander Albon, although both drivers have had problems at the start of the races. He was announced as a Renault test driver in 2016 and in the Force India reserve driver this year.

The announcement does not mean that Latifi will race for McLaren in the future, as many are suggesting. McLaren has had some tough times in recent years, but it is not taking pay-drivers. The Latifis are one of the wealthiest families in Canada, far wealthier than the Strolls. Michael is the owner and CEO of food conglomerate Sofina, which is a big player in meat processing with fresh, frozen, and cooked chicken and turkey products, as well as sliced deli meats, sausages, and turkey bacons; fish products; dry-cured salami, olive oil, and other Italian products.

Marilena comes from an even larger fortune, having been born into the Saputo Family, which runs one of the biggest dairy businesses in the world, operating in 40 countries, with sales of over $16 billion a year. The family is the naming sponsor of the Saputo Stadium, the home of the Montréal Impact of Major League Soccer. The Saputo family is reckoned to be worth around $11 billion. The firm is publicly-traded but the family retains control of much of the company stock.

Brown wants Alonso to race for McLaren outside F1

levitt-0517-ims_02378.jpg

By: RACER Staff | 2 hours ago

McLaren chief executive Zak Brown wants Fernando Alonso to lead any future attempts for his team to expand into IndyCar or the World Endurance Championship.

Alonso drove for McLaren when the team made a one-off appearance at last year’s Indy 500, and this year is competing in the WEC for Toyota as part of his attempts to win the Triple Crown. While Formula 1 has seen McLaren unable to provide Alonso with a car capable of finishing on the podium since he returned to the team in 2015, Brown (pictured at left with Alonso at Indy last year) is hopeful any other categories would be attractive to the Spaniard.

“We’d like to have Fernando in our racing team for as long as he wants to drive,” Brown said. “I think he’ll continue driving beyond his Formula 1 career, and so if we’re in other forms of motor racing, then of course we’d love to have Fernando in our car.”

While Brown has been open about his desire to expand McLaren’s racing activities, a planned budget cap in F1 has increased the possibility of a move into IndyCar in the near future, and he admits the WEC is also attractive.

“McLaren has a long history in additional forms of motorsport whether that was Can-Am, IndyCar, we’ve won Le Mans, and so that is something with the new regulations coming out for World Endurance (Championship) we’re participating in those meetings and reviewing what that looks like.

“We’re a fan of the Le Mans brand. We did the Indy 500 last year. That’s something that in the right circumstances… North America is an important market for us and we’re a fan of IndyCar racing so as we look at the budget cap and how do you manage that, looking at additional forms of racing is something that we’re considering.”

While the next set of WEC regulations have yet to be finalized, Brown says it is likely McLaren will enter in the future given the direction the category is taking.

“Yeah, the rules as they’re being proposed we find compelling,” he said. “We would consider running the new whatever they’re going to call it — GTP, Silhouette, LMP1 — I’ve heard various phrases. But I think what’s exciting is trying to go to Le Mans to win outright. That’s the highest value for a racing team.”

-Chris Medland
