Alejandro Agag: Formula E car design can get 'a lot more extreme' - Formula E
Scott Mitchell
3 minutes

Formula E is prepared to go "a lot more extreme" on future car designs despite only recently unveiling its unique 2018/19 machine.

The electric championship will switch to a bold-looking second-generation car next season after four campaigns with a standard single-seater, while the technology will also make significant progress as well.

If the peak power output of the new car increases to 250kW (335bhp) as expected it will have an extra 50kW (67bhp) in qualifying compared to the current car, while battery capacity rises from 28kWh to 54kWh as the series ditches its current mid-race car swaps.

Series CEO Alejandro Agag told Autosport there was still plenty more it could do, including taking another step forward with the design of the car.

"I think Formula E now is basically breaking new ground in terms of the design of the car," he said.

"We could go a lot more extreme on the third-generation car.

"But already the jump between the first and second is very, very significant.

"What will be important will be the shape of the battery [in the future].

"If we can put it in a different place or spread it out then the sky is the limit for the design of the car."

Four-wheel-drive, torque vectoring and more aggressive braking and energy harvesting technologies have all been suggested for future seasons of FE.

Autosport understands more details on the series' technical roadmap could be made available as early as this month's Geneva Motor Show

New FE car picked by Todt - Agag

The design of the second-generation FE car was met with widespread approval, and Agag has revealed that it was picked by FIA president Jean Todt.

"It's great because you never know how something is going to be received," he said.

"I have to be totally honest, this was not my design - this was Jean Todt's design.

"We had two options, and I liked the other one better. He liked this one.

"We went for his, he's the boss, and I must say he was right.

"The reception by the fans and press was fantastic. I think people really love it.

"In the beginning we had to stay close to the more traditional formula style in order for people to recognise what Formula E was.

"Now we're in a stage in our life as a championship where we could take this risk.

"It paid off."

Evo prilike da prvi put direktno uporedimo brzine F1 i FE bolida:

The full Monaco Grand Prix circuit will be used by the ABB FIA Formula E Championship in Season Five.

Formula E founder and CEO Alejandro Agag confirmed to e-racing365 that the historic 2.074-mile layout will play host to the all-electric championship next May, in its return to the calendar for the 2018/19 season.

“Monaco is back and we will use the full track,” Agag said. “The short track was too small; it was ok, but it is much better for us to race on the big one.”

The shortened 1.097-mile version of the Monaco circuit, which bypassed the section from the exit of Saint Devote to the tunnel section, was used for both the 2015 and 2017 E-Prix events.

The event is run bi-annually as it shares the date with the Monaco Historic Grand Prix due to the principality’s limitation of two motorsports events per year.

Formula E drivers have given high praise to the decision, after previously lobbying to move away from the old layout.

“I think first of all with the new cars, it’s going to be very difficult to continue on the small tracks,” double Monaco E-Prix winner Sebastien Buemi told e-racing365.

“Of course the [Monaco] small track is the smallest track of the whole season and it’s very difficult to overtake there. With more power and better cars, it’s going to be very important to go on the big one.

“When we have a possibility like in Monaco, I think we should jump on it.”

There were erroneous concerns about cars struggling to complete the rise from Saint Devote to the Massenet/Casino complex, although it proved to be a misnomer, which some drivers felt projected a false image of the cars.

Dragon’s Jerome d’Ambrosio, who like Buemi has raced on the full circuit in Formula 1, thinks that the spectacle of competing on the iconic street circuit will send a message about recent advancements in the series.

“Formula E has never been about what will happen if you go up or downhill, it’s a question of if you are going flat-out,” he told e-racing365.

“I think doing the full circuit is a no-brainer as it will provide much more overtaking opportunity at places like Mirabeau and the chicane.

“There is no reason whatsoever why we can’t race there and the Season Five cars will be giving exactly the right message to everyone about EV technology.

“Imagine how cool the Season Five car is going to look heading in to Casino Square. It is going to be fantastic.”

The third edition of the Monaco E-Prix is likely to take place on Sat. May 11, 2019.

Race Format Established for Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY – e-racing365
by John Dagys March 5, 2018

The race format for the Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY has been established ahead of its debut later this year.

The new single-make series, featuring identically prepared all-electric racers, will have a 25-minute plus one lap sprint race on ABB FIA Formula E Championship weekends.

Qualifying will occur earlier in the day, with two Free Practice sessions scheduled on the day prior, depending on track availability.

“It’s so tight [on a Formula E weekend] with whatever street circuit we go to,” Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY Championship Manager Marion Barnaby told e-racing365.

“We’re working with Formula E closely to see where we can get our allocated time.

“We have specific timings we’ve set to, and that at the moment is 25 minutes plus one lap.”

While set to feature on ten Formula E weekends, Barnaby said the championship’s schedule has yet to be determined as it waits on the finalization of the 2018-19 Formula E calendar, which could see up to 12 events.

She did, however, indicate that the season will likely kick off on the season-opening Formula E weekend, which is currently slated for December.

A pre-season testing program, including a “climatization” test for drivers, will also be scheduled.

“We’ll be going through training as well,” Barnaby said. “That will be over a couple of days, then we’ll do additional days prior going into the race season.”

Barnaby indicated the race car, featuring the same powertrain and 90 kWh battery as the recently launched I-PACE production vehicle, should begin on-track testing in the coming weeks.

Leading British motorsport firm M-Sport has been linked to the operations and technical support for the race car and series, which will be run in an arrive-and-drive format.

Considerable Interest in New Series

Barnaby is confident of reaching a full 20-car grid for the inaugural season, having received considerable interest since its announcement last year.

“It’s been very good; we’ve got a lot of interest,” she said. “We’re just speaking to all of them now and working through the lists with them and going through the program.”

Rahal Letterman Lanigan has been the first confirmed team, with the Bobby Rahal-led organization planning a two-car effort.

Additional team announcements are expected in the coming weeks.

“We’re working on that now,” Barnaby said. “Because we’re very busy with car builds and everything else, we’re just clustering them together rather than sending [announcements] out individually.”

Barnaby said the series will be open to drivers holding at least an FIA International C license.
