Di Resta tops first session of Formula E rookie test

formula-e-marrakesh-january-testing-2018

Jaguar driver Paul di Resta topped the morning session of Formula E’s rookie test in Marrakesh, which was briefly interrupted by a dog running onto the circuit.

Maximilian Gunther settled at the top of the times after the first of three hours of morning running in Morocco, where the test is being held exclusively for drivers who have not held a Formula E race licence.

Gunther, driving for Dragon Racing, clocked a 1m22.599s to narrowly head di Resta and DS Virgin Racing’s Joel Eriksson by half a tenth.

Eriksson then found a tenth to leapfrog his 2017 European Formula 3 Championship rival, before the first of two stoppages.

Gunther’s Dragon teammate Andre Caldarelli was the culprit; the Italian crashed at the start of the lap, causing heavy damage to the front end.

He did not emerge again in the morning.

BMW DTM driver Bruno Spengler looked set to challenge his new-for-2018 teammate Eriksson for top spot, but the Canadian – driving for Andretti in this test – slowed dramatically in the middle sector with an unknown problem.

After Spengler’s issue there was a second red flag, although this was much briefer than the one caused by Caldarelli.

A dog ran onto the circuit but proved easier to clear than a crunched Penske EV-2, and running resumed almost immediately.

Di Resta moved to the top of the times on a 1m22.343s, with Techeetah’s James Rossiter lapping just 0.090s slower.

Light drizzle then started to fall, rendering the rest of the morning useless in terms of improvements.
Nobody else leapfrogged the F3 graduates, which meant Ferrari Formula 1 protege Antonio Giovinazzi ended up fifth, two places and two tenths behind Eriksson in the other DS Virgin.

Giovinazzi headed a close trio of drivers completed by Pietro Fittipaldi (Jaguar) and Alexander Albon (Renault e.dams).

Daniel Juncadella, who set the pace early on, was eighth for Mahindra, with Spengler and the second Renault of Mitsunori Takaboshi, Nissan’s Japanese Formula 3 champion, completing the top 10.

Formula 2 race winner Nyck de Vries was the only one of the 20 drivers not to set a time. The McLaren junior was kept in the garage by “technical issues” on his Audi Sport Abt e-tron FE04.

Audi's Muller sets lap record in Formula E rookie test

formula-e-marrakesh-january-testing-2018

Audi driver Nico Muller set a new Formula E lap record around the Marrakesh circuit as he topped the rookie test by almost a second.

Muller concentrated on long runs in the morning, but was first out of the blocks on a full-power lap in the afternoon to immediately best Paul di Resta’s morning benchmark.

He was knocked back to fifth as several drivers improved, with Maximilian Gunther, James Rossiter and Pietro Fittipaldi all heading the times at one stage.

However, Muller pumped in a 1m19.651s with just over five minutes remaining to go 0.946s clear of Jaguar’s Fittipaldi.

That laptime beat the previous lap record, set by the regular driver of Muller’s e-tron FE04 Daniel Abt in second practice on Saturday, by just over a tenth and would also have been good enough to head qualifying by half a second.

However, air and track temperatures were slightly higher on Sunday and previous FE events, with running on both days suggesting track evolution to be worth 0.5-1s.

Fittipaldi’s best was another late effort, coming in the final 15 minutes, and at the time it bumped Techeetah driver James Rossiter to third.

The Briton was then shuffled back to fifth as Maximilian Gunther (Dragon Racing) and di Resta improved in the closing stages.

Daniel Juncadella was sixth-fastest for Mahindra, 0.002s faster than Ferrari Formula 1 protege Antonio Giovinazzi, who was the top DS Virgin Racing driver.

His teammate for the test, new BMW DTM signing Joel Eriksson, was not even a tenth slower in ninth.

Dragon’s Andrea Caldarelli bounced back from a morning crash to slot into the narrow gap between the DS Virgin drivers, while Nyck de Vries managed enough running to complete the top 10.

De Vries spent almost the entire morning waiting in the garage and had to be patient at the start of the afternoon as well, as Audi evaluated problems on both his cars.

The 2018 Prema Formula 2 racer was driving di Grassi’s Audis, both of which had problems on Saturday and were being subjected to evaluations by the team before committing to the test programme.

De Vries only managed two laps in the morning and 15 in the afternoon, but posted a 1m21.108s and was 1.4s slower than Muller.

Nissan’s Japanese Formula 3 champion Mitsunori Takaboshi (Renault e.dams), Venturi development driver Michael Benyahia and Bruno Spengler (Andretti) all caused stoppages in the afternoon.

That meant Benyahia propped up the timesheets for the day overall, although Spengler’s and Takaboshi’s respective morning efforts were enough to get them above NIO’s Harry Tincknell, who focused on race runs throughout the day.

Alejandro Agag: New 'Batman' FE car to be revealed this month
2 hours ago
6-8 minutes
Formula E's new "Batman-style" car will be revealed for the first time later this month – here, series CEO Alejandro Agag explains how the series' "revolution" is gathering pace.

At the end of this month we're going to be launching the second generation car which will debut in season five of Formula E and truly it feels like it will be the start of a new era for us.

We will have a major breakthrough with the battery technology of the new car, giving us more performance and range, which means that for the first time we will no longer require mid-race car changes.

The "Batman-style" car will look very different to any single-seater out there – it is futuristic and eye-catching. Performance-wise we are also very excited as the initial data we gathered during testing is showing a considerably higher speed.

It will be our biggest breakthrough yet to put this car on the track. In fact, we might have to see how that affects some of the layouts of the city tracks we use, because it may be that the car could start to outgrow some of them; we'll be able to take a much more informed position when we have seen the full performance of the car.

The main DNA of the championship is street racing, so let's wait and see the data.

We're moving forward in so many other ways, too, such as our new title partnership with ABB, which makes Formula E the first FIA single-seater championship to have a title partner.

It's an incredibly significant moment because ABB are the perfect partner for us. They have a wide-spread technological base and – of particular significance for us –are involved in the entire energy supply chain, from production to transportation to consumption. And they're doing it in a sustainable way.

They're working on renewables, they're working on batteries, they're working on energy grids, digitalisation, robotics and artificial intelligence… all the things, in fact, that are going to enable the revolution in e-mobility that Formula E wants to promote and continue to be a part of.

We're seeing more and more high technology companies – innovators – entering this championship alongside global car manufactures and that's great. These kinds of partners are aligned with our vision and what we do.

One aspect of ABB technology that has me incredibly excited is their ultra-fast charging. I think this may be an incredible revolution, because if we get to a technology where you stop for, say, 10 seconds and you can charge a battery with 20-30kWh in that time, that's going to change the world completely. One way to make batteries more usable is to increase their capacity; another is to charge them faster and ABB is looking to that. Together with our clean, zero-emission glycerine technology that we are currently using to charge the batteries, I think it could be a game-changer.

The involvement of ABB also says so much about what we are trying to achieve as a championship, because now what sponsors are looking for is not simply what we call 'eyeballs' from television, but being associated with the right message that allows a credible story to be told. 'Eyeballs' will continue to be important and Formula E will grow on both linear TV and digital landscapes as we believe we have a unique combination of sustainable messaging and exciting sporting spectacle.

Formula E has a clear position in that technology and sustainability are linked together and sustainability can be achieved through technology; maybe it's more difficult for other sports and championships, I don't know.

On this subject, when we launched ABB as our title partner just before the race in Marrakesh, we invited Christiana Figueres to speak.

Christiana is the architect of the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change and now co-chairman of our advisory panel and this is a symbol of how we are positioning the right message with Formula E. Christiana, incidentally, is amazing. What she achieved in putting together 200 countries and reaching agreement on something that had been completely unthinkable before - that's one of the greatest achievements of any diplomat in history.

She describes herself as a racing neophyte but she sees exactly what we have been trying to build, which is a tool to make electric vehicles more attractive, more friendly to the average consumer and more accessible. And then people will buy them and that will have a domino effect which will end up helping on issues like climate change and inner-city pollution.

I have been asked if the presence of someone like Christiana brings a political dimension to the championship and I must say that as an ex-politician myself I try to stay as far away as I can from politics! So, I wouldn't say that Formula E has a political dimension – I would call it more of a moral angle, centred around our 'values' and mission to promote the transition to electric vehicles as a contributing factor to fight climate change.

We believe there is an incredible problem with city pollution and we believe investment is needed to fight these problems. And if that's a political statement then we are happy to do that.

Sometimes we have found ourselves victims of regional politics, for example with the cancellation of this year's Montreal event because of a change of mayor in the city. But this is in the nature of racing in cities. If the previous mayor hadn't supported us so much then maybe the current mayor wouldn't dislike us so much! Regardless, we think the cancellation was a political statement against the previous mayor, so no hard feelings there - we understand politics is like that.

It's still so important for us that we build and maintain relationships in different territories. The Marrakesh E-Prix took us to Africa, of course, and we need to be in as many continents as possible to transmit our message.

Obviously in Morocco there are fewer electric cars than in Norway, but that means there is a big opportunity to make a change. And this is a country that is also pushing hard for renewable energy - it has one of the biggest solar power stations in the world.

Every place we go to has its own levers that we can hang on to and we are very happy to show what we represent in each of them.

First Images of New Formula E Car – e-racing365
by Sam Smith January 22, 2018
3 minutes

car1.jpg

The first images of the new generation Formula E car have emerged in a video released by the ABB Formula E Championship.

Brief flashes of the much-anticipated car, known as the Spark SRT-05, were surreptitiously used in the film which was issued almost two weeks ago to announce the arrival of new title partners the ABB Group.

Now, e-racing365 has uncovered that the images are indeed of the new car which has gone through rigorous testing in recent months ahead of being publically unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

The pictures show a carbon gearbox and motor casing, an assembly jig and the front of the monocoque.

More expansive still images are set to be released on January 30 by Formula E before all nine manufacturers receive their chassis, battery and other equipment next month.

The new car features in scenes at both the 20 and 26-second marks in the film, and depict ABB robots working on sections of the Spark SRT-05 car.

The new Formula E car is set to expand the energy capacity to 54kw/h in Season Five. This will negate the car-swap pit stops, and a likely but still to-be-confirmed two-mode power option utilized instead of a traditional pit stop occurring.

The new McLaren Applied Technologies provided battery will see an increase of 200-volts over the existing Williams Advanced Engineering derived unit to peak at 900-volts.

Race power will increase from 180kW to 220kW and qualifying will see cars run to a maximum of 250kW.

car4.jpg

The installation of the battery is also set to change as it will now be fitted from underneath the car and will not have a separate crash structure. It will therefore no longer a stressed component.

Spark and Dallara have combined to manufacture the new cars, but have been led by the FIA, which has taken an unprecedented and detailed interest in the new vehicle from concept through to testing and completion.

E-racing365 has already revealed some of the testing details from last autumn where the likes of Benoit Treluyer, Frederic Makowiecki and Anthoine Hubert conducted a full range of development with the car.

The car has been described as ‘other worldly’ with no rear wing, a large rear venture and a striking one-piece front bodywork section. The car will run one of the Halo safety devices from the outset.

It is believed that a Mahindra powertrain has been used as a basis for the design in much of the architecture of the car and one of the Indian-designed units was used during the independent testing phase
