Kubica in frame for Williams Formula 1 test

Robert Kubica is in frame to test for the Williams Formula 1 team as it evaluates its 2018 driver options, Motorsport.com has learned.

Williams could assess Kubica as a potential replacement for Felipe Massa, who is considering finally retiring at the end of the 2017 F1 season.

With Williams running out of options for Lance Stroll's teammate after Force India confirmed it will keep Sergio Perez next year, rumours are gathering pace that Kubica is high on Williams's shortlist of drivers for 2018.

The team is set to offer Kubica a test in a 2014-spec F1 car.

It is believed Williams is targetting the test for either the Malaysian or Japanese Grand Prix Friday on a European circuit to avoid media attention.

Kubica, whose F1 career was interrupted by life-threatening injuries from a rally crash in 2011, tested '12 and '17 F1 cars with Renault this year in an effort to prove he could return to grand prix racing.

But Renault eventually opted for Carlos Sainz as Nico Hulkenberg's 2018 teammate.

Title sponsor Martini is believed to have a strong say in Williams's driver choice, and it is yet to be seen if the company would be happy with Kubica as a brand ambassador for its global PR campaigns.

Earlier this week it was announced that reigning F1 world champion Nico Rosberg had become part of Kubica's management team.

Rosberg, who drove for Williams from 2006-09 and is well-established at Grove, could potentially take on a supporting brand ambassador role for Martini if Kubica joins Williams.

Palmer

Paz' ovo:

Jolyon Palmer's father has confirmed the 26-year-old is eyeing a switch to Williams for 2018.

Renault driver Palmer admitted Singapore was a difficult weekend, as he tackled not only the news he is being dropped by the team but also rumours he might be replaced by Carlos Sainz as soon as Malaysia in two weeks.

But he then had a strong result in the race, insisting afterwards that he now has "six more races" to show another team that he should be signed for 2018.

"I hope I can build on this confidence," he said.

"Of course I want to stay in formula one, and there are other options. Whatever happens, happens."

Palmer's father, the UK racing circuit mogul Jonathan, is hawking his son's talents up and down the paddock at present.

The best opportunity is Williams, who are also contemplating taking on Robert Kubica. The latest news is that Kubica will follow up his recent Williams simulator test with an actual track outing in Brazil.

But Palmer senior said in Singapore: "A few good races and Williams might take notice.

"Williams will want to take their best option and he has the chance to show he is that over the next few races," added Jonathan Palmer, also a former F1 driver.

Williams confirms it is evaluating Kubica

Williams has confirmed that Robert Kubica is one of the drivers it is evaluating for a race seat in 2018, as the Pole continues his journey towards a potential full-time return, after several tests with Renault.

Kubica suffered severe arm injuries in a rally crash in 2011, cutting short his Formula 1 career, but he started to explore the possibility of a comeback earlier this year.

He sampled 2012-spec F1 machinery courtesy of Renault and was then given the chance to drive the manufacturer's 2017 car at the post-Hungarian Grand Prix test.

Kubica's prospects of returning with Renault were ended by the announcement that current Toro Rosso racer Carlos Sainz Jr. will partner Nico Hülkenberg in 2018.

Renault chief Cyril Abiteboul had stated that the outfit did not get all of the answers it wanted from the final test, before acting to secure Red Bull-backed Sainz Jr. in a loan deal.

However, Kubica has since emerged as a candidate to race at Williams next season.

Lance Stroll, although yet to be officially confirmed, is set to continue, having joined Williams as part of a long-term programme, but there is uncertainty over the identity of his team-mate.

Felipe Massa was recalled by Williams after Nico Rosberg's retirement, to facilitate Valtteri Bottas' move to Mercedes, but has made clear that he needs to feel "wanted" to stay on for another year.

Massa (36), reserve driver Paul di Resta (31) – following an impressive stand-in performance at the Hungaroring – and Kubica (32) are understood to be on Williams' list.

"We are evaluating a number of drivers for our 2018 race seat, of which Kubica is one," a Williams spokesperson explained to GPUpdate.net.

Recent reports have suggested that Kubica will test for Williams in the coming weeks, but the team remained tight-lipped over how it will evaluate its options.

"The details of how we are evaluating the drivers on the list is obviously confidential, but we will make any announcements regarding our future plans when we are in a position to do so," added the spokesperson.

Rosberg, who previously raced for Williams from 2006 to 2009, recently joined Kubica's management stable to assist his bid to return to the Formula 1 grid.

Stroll family dashes Kubica's hopes of a Williams test

A plan to test Robert Kubica in Suzuka last week was thwarted by the Stroll family, and may have impacted the Pole's chances of racing for Williams in 2018.

The Grove-based outfit has narrowed down its list of potential drivers for next season to just three names: Felipe Massa, Paul di Resta and Robert Kubica.

Williams is keen on evaluating the latter, who is attempting a sensational comeback drive after his 2011 rally crash, and planned on slotting Kubica into Lance Stroll's private testing program with a 2014-spec Williams.

According to Mark Hughes from Motorsport Magazine, the young Canadian tested the 2014 Williams twice recently at Suzuka, once before the Singapore Grand Prix and once after.

An opportunity to test Kubica and evaluate the driver in Japan did not get clearance however from Lance Stroll and his father Lawrence.

The billionaire fashion mogul financially supports the entirety of his son's testing program, and while he may not have a say on who races alongside Lance Stroll at Williams, he certainly can decide who can run on his son's time at the private tests.

Ultimately, the Strolls decided to ship the two cars at its disposal directly from Japan to Austin in order to gather mileage ahead of the US Grand Prix.

Williams is now pondering the idea of testing Kubica somewhere in Europe with its remaining 2014-spec car. The 32-year-old must provide the financial backing however to cover the costs of the test.

The complications linked with testing Kubica may play right into the hands of Paul di Resta.

The Scottish driver, who replaced Massa in Hungary this summer when the Brazilian fell ill, is a known quantity for Williams and a consistent and reliable runner with a wealth of experience.

He may just turn out to be exactly what Williams needs...
