Sauber F1 team founder: We're going to be last this season

Formula 1 team founder Peter Sauber has admitted that his Swiss outfit is set to bring up the rear of the field in 2017.

"There are 10 teams," he told the Swiss newspaper Sonntagsblick. "The initial position for Sauber is number 10."

But a worse fate seemed in store for Sauber not too long ago, with the 73-year-old admitting the team he took into F1 back in 1993 almost collapsed completely. Now, with a rescue buyout complete, semi-retirement has become full retirement for Peter Sauber, who says he is no longer involved and owns "not a screwdriver" at Hinwil, Switzerland.

In fact, he said he will be vacationing in South Africa by the end of this week and might not even watch the 2017 season opener on television. Sauber admitted he still feels affected by the turmoil of his last years in F1.

"I needed some time to process the separation from my company," he said. "It is not easy, and I have had sleepless nights. It was a real tightrope walk, and a collapse was always possible. For me, it was an extremely stressful situation, with many unpleasant encounters and telephone calls."

One rumor, for example, is that Sauber had a falling out with the team's ongoing boss, Monisha Kaltenborn.

"We have very little contact," he said. "I still have contacts with some employees, but no office, and I'm never there. They say I am the founder, and they will use the Sauber name, which is important for the new owners. But overall, we made a clean break. It is better like that. So I have nothing to do with the company anymore."

So for now, Peter Sauber thinks the team that still bears his name will be last in 2017.

"But I hope they will succeed in overtaking one or two teams," he said. "There are no miracles in F1. When I look at the years after BMW, 2012 was the last really good season, and after that, it became difficult because of the lack of financial resources.

"During the development of the 2017 car, the time between May and September was very important, and it was then that the funds were missing."

Monisha Kaltenborn says Sauber is not open to a potential switch to Honda power this season amid rumors McLaren could drop the Japanese manufacturer.
McLaren made contact with Mercedes about a potential future power unit supply following a difficult pre-season, leading to speculation a change could happen as early as this season. In that scenario it is understood McLaren could attempt to pass the Honda supply to Sauber, with the Swiss outfit using a year-old Ferrari power unit.
When asked if any talks had taken place about such a situation, Kaltenborn told RACER: "No.

"We have engaged no such talks for this season. We have our engine supply and we are going to be there.
"No, we would not [be interested in such talks]. Our situation is clear and we don't need to change it because others have problems."
Honda's head of F1 project Yusuke Hasegawa also denied the reports after Sunday's race, telling RACER there has been no such suggestion behind the scenes at McLaren.
"I don't care," Hasegawa replied when asked if the rumors were distracting. "For me it's not a fact, so I don't care. Nothing has changed in the current situation. It's easy to deny because it's just a rumor. Of course we don't want to [switch]."
Kaltenborn added her focus is on 2018, with Sauber's current power unit deal with Ferrari coming to an end after this season.
"We are talking," the Sauber team principal said of a longer-term Honda move. "We are talking – we are open with our open with our engine situation and we have a couple of options. We know that we soon have to make a decision and we will, but we are not committed anywhere."

@Anto_Giovinazzi to race for @SauberF1Team at #Chinese GP.

Mercedes executive director Toto Wolff has defended the team’s junior driver Pascal Wehrlein who is missing his second race of 2017 due to injury.

Wehrlein withdrew from the Australian Grand Prix weekend after participating in practice on Friday, saying he did not feel fit enough to complete the race distance. Antonio Giovinazzi took his place.

The 22-year-old suffered a back injury in a crash during the Race of Champions in January.
“I feel for Pascal, because he has had all the bad luck,” said Wolff.

“I’m impressed with the maturity he has shown to inform Sauber that he wouldn’t be able to perform at the level required in Melbourne. That took courage and selflessness, which I know earned him a lot of credit within the team.”

“Now, he needs to build up his fitness and come back strong. I have no doubt that when he’s back in the car, he’ll prove he’s still the same Pascal.”

Sauber announced today Wehrlein will not participate in this weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix and cast doubt on his ability to drive in the Bahrain Grand Prix which takes place one week later.

Wolff also praised Mercedes’ other F1-contracted junior driver Esteban Ocon, who finished tenth in Australia. “Seeing Esteban not only fighting with top drivers like [Fernando] Alonso and [Nico] Hulkenberg but coming out as the winner to take his first F1 point in Melbourne made me proud.”

Mercedes ran two other young drivers including their recently-appointed test driver George Russell at the Algarve International Circuit in Portugal last weekend.

Pascal Wehrlein could miss the entire China-Bahrain double header in the next two weeks, as a bizarre story about his physical fitness continues to unfold.

The Mercedes-backed German sat out the 2017 season opener in Melbourne, citing a lack of fitness in the wake of his winter back injury following a rollover crash at the race of champions event.

He was replaced by the Ferrari reserve Antonio Giovinazzi, who impressed. The Italian will now race again in Wehrlein's place this weekend in China.

This is "to ensure that Pascal will be back in the cockpit in best physical shape at the earliest possible opportunity", Sauber announced in a statement.

But that could be next weekend in Bahrain "or the Russian grand prix", the Swiss team admitted.

"For me the most important is that I can train intensively to ensure a 100pc performance from my side as soon as possible," Wehrlein said.

But some are not buying the 'fitness' story. Former British racing driver and TV presenter Tiff Needell said on Twitter: "Wehrlein doesn't think he's fit enough?! Do you think Giovinazzi ever thought 'but I'm not fit enough'."

Needell's cynicism is not isolated. La Gazzetta dello Sport, an authoritative Italian sports daily, said Sauber's announcement was "a day after Wehrlein said he wanted to at least do Friday practice" in China.

Germany's Auto Bild said Wehrlein, 22, was in the Mercedes F1 simulator on Monday.

The major German daily Bild, as well, does not know how to interpret the Wehrlein story.

"He has now trained for two weeks (since Australia) to be fit," correspondent Lennart Wermke said. "He is supervised by Josef Leberer, once the physio to the great Ayrton Senna.

"But according to Sauber, the ambitious Wehrlein is voluntarily not racing?

"Will Wehrlein be fit enough for Bahrain? Or is there something more to this?" Wermke added.

Wehrlein's career is overseen by Mercedes, whose boss Toto Wolff said: "I feel for Pascal, because he has had all the bad luck.

"Now he needs to build up his fitness and come back strong. I have no doubt that when he's back in the car, he'll prove he's still the same Pascal."
