Po principu, da nije tužno, bilo bi smešno.

Meni je smešno, jer je to jedina preostala reakcija.

Što je mnogo, mnogo je.

Eric Boullier: 'McLaren almost factory team by 2019'

McLaren will become a de-facto 'factory' team by 2019, according to team boss Eric Boullier.

Like many members of the struggling British outfit, Boullier admitted to feelings of relief in Singapore that the Honda divorce is now set in stone.

"It had become inevitable," the Frenchman told Belgian broadcaster RTBF.

"After three difficult years, important decisions had to be made before it was too late. Now what we feel is relief but also sadness because we built a good working relationship with Honda even if there were no results," Boullier added.

Things are now looking better for 2018, with McLaren to use the same engine as the works Renault team and Red Bull and almost certainly also retain the services of Fernando Alonso.

Boullier said: "We have information from Renault that proves to us that their engine is competitive.

"Maybe it is a bit behind the Mercedes and the Ferrari but it has potential."

"We have had meetings that show they are working on a reliability and performance package that will be more competitive next year.

"The other advantage of working with Renault is that we will have a say in engine design. In 2019 we will have a solution that is almost 'factory', so it's an advantage over a customer engine."

McLaren are currently in ninth place in the 2017 constructors' standings.

McLaren offered Honda two alternatives prior to split

XPB_875900_HiRes-e1494663280768-725x500.

McLaren apparently offered engine partner Honda two alternatives early on in the season when it realized where it stood with the Japanese manufacturer.

McLaren's doubts about Honda's 2017 power unit started as far back as pre-season testing in Barcelona in early March.

To try and avoid an engine debacle, the Woking-based outfit took a pro-active stance and came up with several solutions destined to help itself and its partner.

"At the first tests of 2017, we realised serious problems were waiting for us," Boullier revealed in an interview with French weekly Auto Hebdo.

"We began to get nervous and started looking for solutions that could improve the situation.

"As a last resort, we were ready to offer that Honda skips the season while it improves and McLaren would use some other engines for that period."

Boullier did not provide details however about which power unit it would have used if Honda had accepted to take a sabbatical year from F1.

Another alternative was suggested however, and included bringing in outside help to support Honda's efforts.

"Honda engineers and their colleagues from Mercedes could do a technical cooperation," he revealed.

"Or forming our own group of specialists in the engine area made up of different companies to help Honda find more efficient solutions more quickly.

"Unfortunately, none of the proposals were properly explored and as a result we ran out of arguments.

"We had to come to the conclusion that there was no other way out except for the termination of the cooperation," Boullier said.

Honda to limit McLaren penalties
Friday, 22 September 2017
By Chris Medland

Honda will attempt to limit the number of power unit penalties faced by McLaren during the final six races for the partnership.
McLaren will switch to Renault power next season while Honda will remain in F1 to supply Toro Rosso, bringing to an end a three-year partnership. With the Japanese manufacturer having been attempting to improve the performance levels of its power unit regardless of the grid penalties that followed, head of F1 project Yusuke Hasegawa says that approach will now change.
Asked if there would be any changes to the way of working with McLaren now the partnership is coming to an end, Hasegawa replied: "Yes. One of the points is we want to minimize the engine upgrades for the rest of the season, but that is because we'd like to get the maximum results within this year.

"Previously we just prioritized the performance improvement, because any improvement is continuing for next year, so we didn't need to hesitate to introduce upgrades. But now we won't be working together with Stoffel [Vandoorne] and Fernando [Alonso] next year, that means we want to concentrate on this year's results for McLaren.
"I prefer to score more points this year – I'd like to contribute to this team, most of all. But of course if we can get some huge upgrade then we don't need to wait and don't need to hesitate to take a penalty."
Hasegawa hopes Honda can introduce its spec 4.0 power unit at the Malaysian Grand Prix, saying the two races that follow are even more important for the team to avoid penalties at.
"We have another six races left, so we may introduce one more engine as a plan. That could maybe be in Malaysia, Suzuka or the U.S. [COTA]. From that point of view we will try and avoid the penalty in Suzuka obviously, and the U.S. could be a very good potential circuit for us based on the last year's results. So from that point of view Malaysia could be a chance but it's too soon to say. It will be difficult so I cannot confirm."

Fritz-Dieter Rencken‏
@RacingLines

Price of @HondaRacingF1 non-perfomance: @McLarenF1 tech group posts 2016 £6m loss despite £25m @F1 bonuses. IIRC 1st loss since early 80s
