Honda is targeting the podium for 2017.

That is despite the fact that Fernando Alonso has never ruled out the possibility that, after McLaren-Honda's struggles in 2015 and this year, the title remains a goal for next season.

"Everyone has improved a lot in the year, both at McLaren and at Honda," said Honda's F1 chief Yusuke Hasegawa.

"We have shown some good results, but in the end I am not satisfied with the results we have," the Japanese told Speed Week.

Indeed, McLaren finished the season sixth, with Hasegawa hinting that the rise to the very top might take the Anglo-Japanese collaboration a little longer.

"A podium would be a good result," Hasegawa said. "And also a realistic goal, even if there is still a lot of work and some unknowns regarding 2017.

"For example, we do not know where the other teams are in terms of performance. The key is time," he insisted. "We need time for success."

However, Hasegawa said he is happy with McLaren's 2017 driver lineup, with rookie Stoffel Vandoorne to replace the retiring Jenson Button.

While highly rated, Belgian Vandoorne is largely untested and new McLaren CEO Jost Capito says retaining Fernando Alonso beyond 2017 is a top priority.

And new McLaren executive Zak Brown has made a point of saying the door remains open in the future for Lewis Hamilton, whose relationship with Mercedes appears shaky.

Hasegawa, meanwhile, backed Vandoorne.

"Stoffel has shown that he can fight," he said.

"Normally, a new driver is a risk, but Stoffel is talented and calm. We have no great concerns about his performance as he has proved his talent already.

"The biggest problem is when a driver wants to prove something, but I want Stoffel to do his job and not put on a show. We have to make him feel good.

"This will be very important," the Japanese said.

No, bumo videl'... :)

Red Bull and ExxonMobil
December 1, 2016 by Joe Saward

I think it was back in Austin that I first mentioned that Red Bull would be getting a deal with ExxonMobil, to replace its partnership with Total. It has taken a while but the story has finally been confirmed, the date is obviously part of this as December 1 is often a contractual cut-off point for deals and so we can expect some more stories to sneak out in the days ahead if anyone, for example, has an option on an engine deal for 2018, which must be taken up or dropped, and this sort of thing.

I am still expecting to hear that Renault has done a big deal with BP, as the McLaren deal announced some weeks ago seems to be only a fuel and lubricant partnership and not a sponsorship. I believe the proposed BP-Renault deal will be for about $35 million (which is a big deal these days) but it is rather complex as Renault and has an ongoing agreement with Elf (a division of Total) until 2019 for Renault to recommend the use of Elf lubricants to its whole network and customers around the globe. Renault has promoted Elf oils in its road cars for decades, while its F1 cars also carried Elf sponsorship. This changed in 2009, when Elf logos were replaced by Total. The problem is that it seems that Total has decided to stop all sponsorship in F1 in 2017, what with the oil price and falling revenues. Renault wants money for F1 or freedom to have another partner. This is taking time to sort out.

Stoffel Vandoorne has admitted he is unlikely to be in a position to win races straight away in formula one.

Although several years older than Max Verstappen, Belgian Vandoorne is already being compared with the young Dutchman as he prepares to make his full F1 debut for McLaren-Honda in 2017.

"That's normal, although we are very different," Vandoorne, 24, told Belgium's Sporza news agency.

"We have different characters. Many enthusiasts are looking forward to a fight between us, and hopefully it will be for victories."

When asked if that wheel-to-wheel for victory might happen as soon as 2017, Vandoorne answered: "Why not, but it will depend on the car.

"It probably will not be enough, but we will take big steps forwards.

"Technically, the team has some difficult seasons behind it, but next year looks positive even if it remains difficult to predict.

"Probably we will take a big step forward, which is also what we need. But if we will be able to fight for victory, I cannot say yet," he added.

Meanwhile, Vandoorne ruled out any suggestion that he might be an outside contender to replace the newly-retired Nico Rosberg at Mercedes, after Toto Wolff made flattering remarks about him recently.

"I have a contract with McLaren-Honda and I'm super happy about it," he said. "I am focusing now on next season and not thinking about the other teams."

Jost Capito: McLaren to part company with F1 boss after four months

McLaren are set to part company with their new Formula 1 boss Jost Capito less than four months after the German joined the company.

The 58-year-old started in his role as chief executive officer of McLaren Racing in September, having been recruited by chairman Ron Dennis.

But Dennis is on gardening leave pending the end of his deal next month.

And Capito, too is now on his way out, having been viewed as Dennis's man, BBC Sport has learned.

Capito is still an employee but is no longer working day-to-day for the company.

When asked about this situation, a spokesman said: "I'm not going to talk about that."

Capito was unavailable for comment.

The move follows the recruitment in November of leading F1 commercial expert Zak Brown as McLaren's new executive director.

Brown and chief operating officer Jonathan Neale have been tasked with running the McLaren Group on a day-to-day basis.

In a separate development, long-time McLaren marketing chief Ekrem Sami has had his position as a director of the McLaren Group terminated.

Sami, 62, has been a long-time close ally of Dennis, for whom he has worked for nearly 40 years.

Dennis technically remains chairman and chief executive pending the end of his contract next month but no longer has an active role running the company. He is also a 25% shareholder in McLaren Group.

In Dennis' place, the company is being run by an executive committee formed by the other main shareholders - the Bahrain sovereign investment fund Mumtalakat, which owns 50%, and TAG's Mansour Ojjeh, who owns 25%.

Once Capito's departure is formalised, the most senior person at McLaren's F1 team will be racing director Eric Boullier, who was brought in at the start of the 2014 season after Dennis ousted his former friend and protege Martin Whitmarsh from the positions of McLaren team principal and chief executive officer of McLaren Group.

The Frenchman, 43, will report to Brown and Neale.
