Porsche moves closer to Formula E after Monaco meeting

Porsche is moving closer to a future in the FIA Formula E Championship following a meeting between key personnel of the German marque and series boss Alejandro Agag in Monaco.

The senior figures that met Agag during last month’s Monaco ePrix were Porsche CEO Oliver Blume, Porsche board member Michael Steiner and Andreas Seidl, the current team principal and technical boss of the Weissach marque’s LMP1 team.

Formula E is known to be firmly on Porsche’s future motorsport strategy radar, and an entry as soon as season five in 2018-19 could be made a reality.

Porsche has long since been linked to a potential Formula E campaign, with Motorsport.com revealing its interest in the all-electric series and in particular its battery deal last September.

In addition to the Monaco meeting, further Porsche staff members attended the Berlin ePrix last weekend to talk about additional parameters for an entry in the near future.

"We received an invitation [to Monaco] from Alejandro Agag to have a look and experience Formula E for the first time,” Seidl told Motorsport.com at Le Mans.

“We just had an invitation to an interesting series, though maybe there are not enough technical freedoms yet.”

Like many manufacturers, Porsche has been monitoring Formula E carefully, especially since the second season in 2015/16.

The likelihood of a direct involvement is believed to have accelerated in recent months, ever since it was confirmed that Formula E would stick to its plan to switch to one-car races in season five.

Last year, Porsche showed significant interest in the spec battery tender, which will see the series do away with the current two-car format in races from 2018/19.

McLaren Applied Technologies won the tender, which will be delivered in conjunction with the US-based Lucid Motors company, which specialises in automotive battery technology.

Porsche refutes LMP1 quit reports

Recent reports in German magazine Motorsport Aktuell have suggested that Porsche’s current LMP1 programme could be curtailed at the end of the 2017 season.

Porsche's initial project in the FIA World Endurance Championship was for five years, with three seasons of racing covering 2014-16 after two initial test and development years.

This was extended to cover 2017 and ‘18 in August of 2015, and Seidl insisted there was “no news” from the board when asked by Motorsport.com, saying Porsche remains “committed”.

A final decision on the German manufacturer’s future is expected to be made public later this year.

Konačno.

"Exclusive control" - Audi wants to take over Abt Formel E GmbH

The German automaker Audi apparently faces the takeover of Abt Formel E GmbH. This confirmed a company spokesman on Wednesday in the 'Heilbronner Stimme'. "Abt Formel E" is a subsidiary of the Abt Sportsline GmbH based in Kempten, which was not founded until October 2016. Audi thus assumes the sole control over the Formula E project, before the Ingolstädter, as is known, enter the electric series for the fourth season in December 2017. According to information from 'e-Formel.de' ABT will continue to take over the operational business at the race track for the future AudiSport team.

Audi and ABT are thus obviously a similar model as for many years in the DTM. Audi is also active in the factory, but ABT operates one of the three racing stables (formerly two out of four). According to our information, a long-term contract was concluded between both parties.

Only within the framework of the Berlin ePrix two weeks ago, Audi had announced that it had entered into a provisional 3-year contract with the current drive developer Schaeffler, which maintains a technical cooperation between the two sides. To our understanding, Audi will assume the project management and the main development of the Formula E project, and Schaeffler is expected to deliver the components.

The fact that Audi will have more to say in the future than Schaeffler will also be confirmed by the statement of an Audi speaker that the company is seeking the "indirect acquisition of all shares" of Abt Formel E GmbH at the Bundeskartellamt and the "sole control" in the project. Say: the complete takeover.

The Formula E is an exciting race series for Audi, which is why we intend to take over the Abt Formel E GmbH and have submitted this to the merger control at the Bundeskartellamt. " Audi had withdrawn from the WEC at the end of 2016, in order to concentrate on Formula E in the future - initially as a technology partner of the team ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport, starting from season four then with factory use.

The merger from Baden-Württemberg was registered. The 'Heilbronner Stimme' concludes that ABT could be docked at Audi Sport in Neckarsulm. This is wrong to our knowledge. In all probability, ABT will continue to operate from Kempten.

The name "Abt Formel E" may already be a term for some readers, because it appeared surprisingly in the manufacturer list for season five in March of this year. The GmbH obviously holds the rights to the manufacturer license for the championship year 2018/19. It is not known how much Audi will cost the takeover of the ABT subsidiary.
