Red Bull team boss Christian Horner says he apologized to former driver Sebastian Vettel for his successor Daniil Kvyat's Russian Grand Prix actions and expects Kvyat to do the same.

Kvyat ran into Vettel twice within the first three corners at Sochi, with the second impact sending the Ferrari into the barriers. Two weeks earlier at Shanghai, Vettel had pilloried Kvyat over a first-lap incident as they waited to go onto the Chinese GP podium.

Vettel, a Red Bull driver from 2009-14, visited Horner on the Red Bull pitwall during the Sochi race to discuss what had happened.

"He said hello and made his thoughts well known," Horner said of their conversation. "All I could do was apologize to him. It's cost us a lot of points and unfortunately compromised Sebastian as well. But he's a young guy, he'll learn from it and I'm sure he'll come back strong in Barcelona."

Horner said Kvyat "accepts he made a mistake."

"He has apologized to the team and I think he's apologised to Sebastian – if he's not seen him in person I'm sure he'll do it next time he sees him," he said.

Both Red Bulls picked up damage in the initial incident, as Vettel was forced into Kvyat's teammate Daniel Ricciardo. The pair struggled home 11th and 15th, Kvyat further delayed by a penalty for hitting Vettel.

Horner did not think the added pressure of Kvyat being in his home race was a factor.

"I am sure he was pumped up for his home race but I just think it took him by surprise how quickly the cars stopped ahead of him," he said. "He's young and it's the first time he has been involved in an incident like this and I'm sure he will learn from it."

Ferrari Formula 1 team principal Maurizio Arrivabene has revealed Sebastian Vettel was "going ballistic" after crashing out of the Russian Grand Prix following two hits from Daniil Kvyat.

Vettel was tapped sideways and into the Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo by Kvyat at the second corner of the race, then went off at Turn 3 after the second hit.

Arrivabene understands Vettel's frustration at being eliminated.

"He was not happy at all, he was going ballistic," said Arrivabene when asked how Vettel reacted. "He has taken a DNF for a second time [this season] for something that has nothing to do with him. This is the character of a guy who is a four-time world champion who wants to win, so it's understandable.

"Afterwards, we talked and he was a bit more calm, but of course calm does not mean happy."

Arrivabene added that while he had not blamed Kvyat for what happened at the first corner of the Chinese GP two weeks earlier there was no excuse for what the Red Bull driver did this time.

"Last time, in China, I was not complaining about Kvyat and I said he has done his job," said Arrivabene. "This time, I can't find any reason for what has happened. If we look at the images, it's quite clear. Sebastian said to me that he [Kvyat] touched him one time in the beginning just a bit, then the second time quite hard."

This was Vettel's second score of zero in four races so far this season, the first coming when he was unable to start the Bahrain GP.

It means he is now 67 points off drivers' championship leader Nico Rosberg,
