The family of Maria de Villota says it has ended litigation against the Manor Formula 1 team after reaching an agreement.

De Villota crashed into an articulated trailer while carrying out a straight-line test for Marussia at Duxford Aerodrome in 2012.

She lost her right eye but was able to make a full recovery from her other injuries. She died on October 11 2013, aged 33.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive concluded no action would be taken against the parties involved.

De Villota's family subsequently began litigation against the F1 team, that later became Manor F1, but a statement from UK law firm Slater and Gordon on Wednesday said both parties had reached an agreement.

"The family of Maria de Villota are pleased to say that they have reached agreement in their dispute with the Manor F1 Team following Maria's accident on the 3 July 2012," read the statement.

"The accident happened for a number of reasons, one of which was that a lorry was parked in the pit area with its tail lift projecting, for which Maria was not at fault."

The statement quoted a spokesperson for Manor saying: "It was a tragic accident which shocked the team and all who knew her. She is sorely missed."

Paul Tapner from Slater and Gordon added on behalf of the family that: "This is an important moment, as the family can now put all their efforts into continuing with Maria's Legacy."

The statement added: "Maria's Legacy is a movement created to give continuity to Maria's solidarity programs focussing primarily on children with neurodegenerative diseases and people with limited financial resources.

"Once again, the family wishes to say thank you to all the fans, friends and others that have supported Maria before and during her career, particularly those who did so after the accident.

"Also to all those who today continue remembering her with her happiness and smile taking care of those most in need."

The Manor F1 team closed its doors in March this year but it is believed the settlement has been reached with Manor's public liability insurer.

FIA Reimburses Manor Racing for 2017 F1 entry fee
1 minute

Funds returned following closure of team prior to the start of the 2017 FIA Formula One World Championship

The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) has returned the entry fee paid by Manor Grand Prix Racing Limited in November 2016 in order to be able to participate in the 2017 FIA Formula One World Championship.

Just Racing Services Limited, the company within the Manor Group responsible for servicing the team went into administration in January of this year and ceased trading later that month. Consequently, the team did not take any part in the 2017 Championship.

The FIA has therefore decided to return the entry fee, less the administrative costs incurred by the Federation as part of the entry process, to the entity within the Manor Group in administration as a gesture of good will to assist in payment of outstanding debts.

Manor is not ruling out a return to formula one.

The F1 team went out of business after 2016, switching instead to world endurance sports car racing.

For 2018, Manor will contest the top-tier LMP1 category at Le Mans and takes on the services of Kimi Raikkonen's 2017 race engineer Dave Greenwood.

Asked if Manor might be preparing for a F1 comeback, boss Graeme Lowdon said: "If nothing changes - if there is no cost cap and the costs stay the same - then we cannot go back because it's impossible to race against the big teams.

"But we have heard from the FIA and Liberty that work is being done to reduce the cost for private teams," he told Finland's Turun Sanomat newspaper.

"In that case, we are interested in returning. Both myself and John Booth have unfinished business in F1," Lowdon added.
