Renault has over 80 new staff - Vasseur

Renault team principal Fred Vasseur says the French team is recruiting "from top to bottom" in its efforts to return to competitiveness in Formula 1.

The French manufacturer is gradually expanding its Enstone base following its takeover of the former Lotus outfit last December, and has been seeking more quality personnel to add to the fold.

Former Ferrari and Lotus technical director James Allison is believed to have elected not to return to Enstone after leaving Maranello, but Vasseur told Autosport that plenty of other new people have joined since the beginning of the season.

"We have recruited a lot, so far something like 85 people since the beginning of the season, and we are increasing the size of the building," Vasseur said.

"You can't decide 'OK I take 100 people more, they will come tomorrow, and I will have the facility'.

"You can't jump from 400 people to 800 people in one week - you have to do it step by step.

"It makes no sense also to recruit just because you want to make numbers. It would be a mistake.

"We have to reinforce the team position by position - as soon as we have the feeling we have a weakness.

"I can't give you names, because it's unfair, but we will reinforce the team.

"From the bottom to the top we are recruiting some key people.

"They will join the team in the next few weeks and months."

Vasseur said Enstone's personnel expansion had to be managed carefully and gradually, to avoid overloading the nascent infrastructure.

He said Renault's new multi-million-pound building project would be completed before the end of next season.

"When you reinforce the design office you have to [also] reinforce the production, the windtunnel etc," Vasseur added.

"It makes no sense to have 20 guys in the windtunnel if you have nobody to design the parts.

"You have to do it step by step.

"For me it's not a matter of numbers, we need to attract the good guys.

"You will see over the next weeks that we are doing the job."

Renault to produce all-new engine for F1 2017

Renault is working on an all-new engine for Formula 1 2017, Motorsport.com has learned, after deciding that it had no chance of making the gains it needs if it stuck to its current concept.

The French car manufacturer has made good progress this year after turning the corner on a turbulent 2015 season that could have resulted in it pulling out of F1 altogether.

With a renewed commitment to grand prix racing through its works team, and having delivered two wins this campaign with partner Red Bull, Renault believes it has laid the groundwork for even better things to come in the future.

And it has emerged that part of its plan will now involve a brand new powerunit for 2017 – after feeling that it had reached the full potential of the current concept that it has used since 2014.

Renault team principal Fred Vasseur told Motorsport.com: “We have some good improvements in the pipeline. We will have a completely new engine next year.

“It is 100 percent new. It was the end of the development of the current one. We needed to do a step in order to move forward and we will do that. So far, everything is progressing and close to the expectations.”

Change of concept

When asked if Renault was planning to adopt the Mercedes concept of a split turbine and compressor, Vasseur said: “It is a Renault concept...I think we don’t have to stick to the others on the engine.

“We made a very good improvement over the past six to eight months and if we want to do another step we need to change a little bit the concept. I think they did it.”

Renault’s customer team Red Bull is tipped to become Mercedes’ main challenger for the F1 title in 2017, when new regulations will put the emphasis back on aerodynamics.

And having made significant gains this year to close the gap to Mercedes, Vasseur expects a similar leap in 2017.

“We improved over the winter, and between Spec A and Spec B,” he said. “We could expect the same thing next year and during the season.

“When you take a decision on a project, we were at the end of the concept – and to do another step we need to change a little bit the concept.”

Vasseur remains cautious about Renault's chances for 2017 and while he expects a big gain over the 2016 season, he says there won't be a significant 'leap' in just one season.

“Whilst 2017 should see a good step forward, we are realistic in our expectations as we know that we won't leapfrog the midfield in a single season.

Renault Sport has confirmed the latest changes to its personnel line-up, with company veteran Rob White moving from Viry to the UK as operations director and Ciaron Pilbeam returning to Enstone as chief race engineer.

The arrival of Pilbeam, who has worked at BAR, Red Bull, Lotus and most recently McLaren, is part of a 20% expansion in the overall headcount.

Renault poised to secure BP Formula 1 partnership for 2017

Renault is poised to land a Formula 1 partnership with oil company BP starting in the 2017 season.

The French manufacturer, which in recent years has worked with Total, is looking for a new partner, and it is understood to be closing on a multi-year deal with BP.

While McLaren is also set to join forces with BP after Exxon Mobil switched to Red Bull for next year, the British team's deal is believed to be a technical arrangement with a much smaller commercial aspect than Renault is expected to seal.

Renault would not comment on the matter when contacted by Autosport this week, but managing director Cyril Abiteboul recently said the manufacturer was keen to establish a partnership as strong as world champion team Mercedes has with Petronas.

"What we've done very carefully is looked at the key success factor of Mercedes before making the decision to come back as a team [for 2016]," he said.

"One of the key success factors of Mercedes is Petronas.

"Many people did not realise at the time, but Petronas have been extremely committed to Formula 1, financially and technically.

"So that's what we need - a partner who's 100% committed.

"I'm completely confident that through a new relationship we will be capable of finding a partner with the same appetite and the same financial resources and the same technical capabilities as Petronas continues to have for Mercedes."

Renault is believed to be looking for a partnership that will include a 'first-fill' arrangement on its road cars when they leave the factory, something that could be expanded across its partner manufacturers including Nissan, Mitsubishi, Infiniti and Lada.

"We are the largest manufacturer involved in Formula 1 by volume [of road car production]," Abiteboul added.

"I have absolutely no doubt that this is attractive to any petroleum brand."
