As Mercedes looks into the future, Nico Rosberg says his ideal teammate is Lewis Hamilton.

As the teammates duelled alone for the titles in 2014 and 2015, the rising acrimony of the relationship moved Mercedes boss Toto Wolff to warn that the pair may need to be separated beyond 2016.

Rosberg is the one with the expiring contract, but Wolff has said Hamilton's contract also contains a clause about behaviour damaging to the team.

But when asked who he would like to see beside him at Mercedes into the future, Rosberg told the Munich newspaper TZ: "Lewis. He is a strong driver and the team has been successful."

However, during their 2015 battle, Rosberg complained publicly that Hamilton is a driver who too often thinks only of himself rather than the team as a whole.

"That impression (of Hamilton) is not entirely true," the German now clarifies. "As a driver, you need your team to be successful. If the team realises that you think only of yourself, the whole thing quickly fails to work."

So while Hamilton once joked that life would be easier if there was a 'wall' between the two sides of the garage, Rosberg explains: "It will never happen because it's not good for the team.

"We are here to win races for Mercedes. And under the conditions created by the team, the fact that we push each other can lead to tension, but the team benefits the most."

It might be said that Rosberg's sudden conciliatory tone is because he managed to turn around his early struggle in 2015 to finish with a winning hat-trick.

"Definitely I didn't reinvent the wheel," he explained. "Maybe I was just able to get back to 100 per cent where previously I was at 98. That is enough to make the difference."

Others have surmised that the low-point of throwing away the win and the title in Austin was a wake-up call, and Rosberg confirmed: "After Austin I said to myself that it cannot go on like that.

"But it was always very close -- usually only a tenth separates us, and in the end it was on my side. As for why, it's difficult to explain," he said.

So the German played down the notion that F1 will see a 'new Rosberg' in 2016.

"Basically no. But it will be a more developed Rosberg," he explained. "One who learned from this season. And one who wants to carry over the advantage of the last race to the new season.

"For me, the new season began long ago."

Sezona jos nije ni pocela a ovi su vec krenuli sa mindgames...

Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche says he is perfectly happy with Mercedes' F1 driver duo.

Team boss Toto Wolff warned recently that if the bitterness of the rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg spills into the team spirit, he would consider making a change.

But Zetsche told Auto Express that the Briton and German are in fact "the perfect couple".

Even Hamilton's extravagant off-track lifestyle, he said, is not a problem.

"As long as Lewis wins races he can organise the rest of his life - as long as it is within the scope of our brand values - as he wants to," said Zetsche.

"At the same time we have the other guy who's as fast and has a very different lifestyle with a family and a kid. These are the two bookends and I think we are really very lucky to have them, they are the perfect couple," he added.

Zetsche also addressed the issue of Mercedes' utter dominance over the past two years, suggesting he hopes Ferrari manages to close the gap for 2016.

"We want to win," he said, "preferably in the last race by two points. But this is not our task to reduce the gap, but the task of our competitors."

Brka je vec odabrao na cijoj je strani, meni se cini da je i Toto odabrao ali suprotnu stranu...

Mercedes F1 power unit delivering over 900bhp

Mercedes has revealed that its dominant power unit is now capable of delivering over 900bhp, with engine boss Andy Cowell confident there should be more to come in 2016.

Mercedes has been the clear benchmark in the latest turbo era, as the constructor’s all-conquering unit has propelled its works outfit to four world titles, 32 race wins and 36 pole positions since 2014.

Speaking to the press during a media event held on Friday at Mercedes’ power unit department in Brixworth, Cowell gave further details on the team’s latest developments.

“It's the most powerful Formula One engine [we've made] with over 900bhp,” he is quoted as saying by ESPN. “It's pretty good going from this little nimble 1.6-litre engine, but that power has been created because the efficiency has changed.”

With technical regulations imposing restrictions on fuel capacity and fuel flow, energy efficiency has become a cardinal performance factor while seamless power unit integration with the chassis also gives the edge to Mercedes and Ferrari’s (and perhaps soon Renault’s) factory teams.

The world champions explain that their power unit already achieved more than 45 per cent thermal efficiency last year, and hints that it could deliver even better results in the near future.

“Thermal efficiency is going up from where we were in 2014, with a good step up for 2015," Cowell added. “Perhaps it is going to go up in 2016 and it's definitely going to go up in the future because nobody has said we have reached the limit here. When I walk around the factory I never hear people say that it's the best we can do or is optimum.”

Having already steamrolled the field in the inaugural 1.6-litre V6 turbocharged season, Mercedes came back even stronger in 2015. Cowell’s explanations will thus sound as ominous warnings to rivals that are hoping to make some inroads into the word champions’ advantage this year.

“Does it get harder to find big gains? Yes it does, but there are lots of areas where small gains will come. It's a little bit like gold mining when you work bloody hard to get lots of dust and every now and again you get a nice big nugget that makes you smile. We still find those nuggets.

“We have made some huge gains in the last years as we have done the development and we have made good gains with the last two years of racing. I don't see that stopping and I don't think anybody here thinks we have reached the limit.”
