Rossi and Lorenzo eager for Yamaha gearbox upgrade

Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo have made it clear to Yamaha that a seamless shift gearbox could drastically help improve acceleration issues with the new 2013 factory YZR-M1.

A new gearbox was high on reigning world champion Lorenzo’s wish list for 2013, but the seamless shift system already employed by Honda and Ducati is not yet available.
And both Rossi and Lorenzo admitted at the end of the second day of MotoGP testing in Sepang today that they have no indication when Yamaha will introduce a seamless shift gearbox.

It is not even clear if the Japanese factory plans to introduce the seamless shift gearbox, which Honda and Ducati have been using since 2011.

Although both claim the seamless shift gearbox only gives a minimal advantage of 0.1s per lap, it is the stability under acceleration when shifting up through the gears that offers an improvement over the current Yamaha system.

A rear pumping issue under acceleration remains a key weakness for Yamaha’s YZR-M1, and both Rossi and Lorenzo spoke about how a new gearbox could help when asked by MCN in Malaysia earlier today.

Rossi told MCN: “The important area is acceleration, because it looks like the M1 is very good until the acceleration part where it’s good, but looks like if we try to use more power the bike pumps, wheelies, and goes a bit in crisis. I never follow the Honda with the Yamaha.

But last year when I followed the Honda with the Ducati and the Yamaha, the difference in acceleration was quite big. It looks that Honda is able to put more horsepower on the ground, but not because they have more horsepower but because they can use some horsepower more than us. It is better mechanical grip.”

Rossi believes a seamless shift gearbox would go some way to alleviating the pumping problem under acceleration and after finishing fourth quickest for the second day in succession in Sepang, he added: “A seamless shift gearbox could make the difference but for me, more than the first part of throttle opening, it is the second part of the acceleration when you go full throttle that the pumping comes.

A seamless shift gearbox is very good and it is an advantage for sure. I am pushing on Yamaha for this gearbox but I don’t know. We don’t know if arrive or not. We hope so."

Spaniard Lorenzo, who finished second behind Repsol Honda rival Dani Pedrosa for the second day in a row, appeared disappointed that his repeated requests for the seamless shift gearbox throughout last season has not delivered a new system in time for the start of winter testing in Malaysia.

Lorenzo set a best time of 2.00.568 today to finish just 0.019s behind in-form Pedrosa and he told MCN: “We still have this movement on acceleration, the pumping, and we still haven't solved this.”

Asked by MCN if he was disappointed a new gearbox did not form part of Yamaha’s new 2013 YZR-M1, he said: “Yes, of course it is better to have this gearbox rather than not, it makes some difference on acceleration on the long corners and on full throttle and upshifts.

But for the moment we don't have it and we don’t know if the regulation will change and this gearbox will be forbidden in one or two years.  I don't know. Lucky we have some other strong points like the braking for the high-speed corners but when we pick up the bike we need to improve it.

We are working on it but it seems that the Honda guys don't have to take so many risks in the corners, just pick up the bike and they have something more.  But it is opposite on the braking where it seems we are stronger. But finally in lap times we are quite competitive."

The status of Yamaha’s seamless shift gearbox plans will become clearer tomorrow when senior engineer Kouichi Tsuji holds a special press briefing with the media at the Sepang track.

Rossi and Marquez Prove Their Worth: MotoGP Session 3 Results

The opening MotoGP test session of 2013 has finished in Sepang today, with the final timesheets showing a hint of a tantalising season ahead.

Dani Pedrosa drew first blood of the winter testing campaign after topping the timesheets on each day. The Repsol Honda rider improved to a 2.01.000 in searing heat and humidity today to edge out reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo by just 0.329s.

Making a prediction on the outcome of the 2013 season looks to be futile at best with little to choose between Pedrosa and Lorenzo, who won 13 races between them in 2012,  throughout the entire test.

Encouragingly for fans of Valentino Rossi, the remarks he made about being back on 'his' bike seem to be holding true after the Italian legend posted another solid set of times that left him just 0.113s behind factory Yamaha teammate Lorenzo and just over 0.4s behind Pedrosa's best pace.

Perhaps more tellingly, the rejuvenated 33-year-old easily outpaced Nicky Hayden and his factory Ducati Andrea Dovizioso, who got a stark reminder of the task he faces to make the unruly Desmosedici competitive by finishing over two seconds off the pace.

Hopefully putting to bed all previous rumours and distractions over his performances last year in Moto2, Marc Marquez posted another excellent set of times to add to those in his previous two sessions. The Spanish teenager was fourth quickest and he escaped injury in a crash when he lost the front-end of his factory Honda RC213CV at the final corner earlier today.

Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider Crutchlow was the top non-factory rider, with his fastest time of 2.00.734 placing him in fifth but less than a hundredth-of-a-second behind Marquez.  Bradley Smith was eighth overall and only 1.831s off the best time at the end of the test.

Michael Laverty too had a great run out on the Paul Bird ART machine and he was the second fastest CRT rider on a morale-boosting MotoGP debut.

Only Aspar rider Aleix Espargaro was faster as the Irishman was faster than the likes of Randy de Puniet, Colin Edwards and teammate Yonny Hernandez.

Ducati riders say major changes needed to 2013 MotoGP bike

Ducati riders Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso believe major changes are needed to the 2013 bike after a poor start to MotoGP testing at Sepang.

All four Ducatis lagged behind the Hondas and Yamahas throughout the week, struggling to get above the lower top-10 places and never getting within 1.5 seconds of the lead pace.

Hayden acknowledged that the Malaysian Grand Prix track was not Ducati's strongest venue, but said the time for small upgrades was over.

"We obviously can't be happy when our times are that far off of the top guys, but we knew it was going to be tough," he said.

"Sepang has never been a particularly good track for Ducati. We raced here in October, and the bike hasn't changed much since then.

"We found a couple little things over the course of the test, which allowed us to improve our consistency on day three, but I think we need something big."

New team-mate Dovizioso, a former works Honda rider who joined Ducati from Tech 3 Yamaha, said the test at least showed the Italian squad the task it faced.

"We're here to improve the situation and everybody knows the level we are now so we have to improve," he said.

"We tested as much stuff as we could, because we're focused on improving the bike. The gap to the others is big, and we pushed a lot to understand the bike.

"We don't know how the next test in Sepang will be. There's too short a time between now and then, so it's difficult to do something big in this time.

"We still have to decide which parts we can bring to the second test. Unfortunately, we need time to try something big."

Ducati MotoGP director Paolo Ciabatti admitted the test had been an unpleasant experience.

"We knew we were starting from a base that needed significant development work, but it's not nice to realise we're still so far from the leaders," he said.

Zasto bruka?
