@Alen

Fernando Alonso is no longer ruling out a future move into Nascar, America's premier tin-top series.

Earlier in January, although the McLaren driver last year did the Indy 500 and is now moving into sports cars, he ruled out Nascar.

"Those cars require a unique driving style which can only be acquired through a lot of practice and I do not have that many free weekends," he said.

But he now says he may try Nascar "one day".

"I love motor sports," Alonso is quoted by USA Today newspaper.

"It was nice to go to the Indy 500. I felt competitive there. Now I'm going to endurance racing. Maybe one day I'll try different series, maybe even Nascar. Why not?"

However, the former two-time F1 title winner admits that a Nascar foray may have to take place at some unknown point in the future.

"Right now it looks quite far because I think with driving technique and the experience all those guys have, it's quite difficult for me to achieve that level," Alonso said.

"But I will never know until I try. I would like one day to test a car. After that, I probably would know how enjoyable it would be racing," he added.

Evo neka ga i ovde:

Alonso likely to return to Daytona

Fernando Alonso says he is likely to return to Daytona in the future.

The Spaniard had a less than perfect endurance sports car debut at the American event in 2018, but he said he now feels "much better prepared" for Le Mans.

"I can drive prototypes better than I could two weeks ago," Alonso is quoted by Spain's Diario Sport.

But the McLaren driver said F1 remains his "number 1 priority" this year, although admitting that his chances of racing at Le Mans increased from 50 to 60 per cent.

"If and when I drive Le Mans, then it will be my second time driving at night, knowing how long to rest and sleep etc," Alonso added.

And he said a return to Daytona in 2019 is probable, as he can prepare for F1 at the wheel of a racing car "much better" than in the gym or on a bike.

As for his chances of podiums in F1 this year, he said McLaren is "very confident".

"In recent years we have always hoped that the next season will be better, but these were just hopes. This time we also have facts," Alonso added.

Alonso was “giddy” at thought of winning Daytona 24 Hours
2018 F1 season

Fernando Alonso was “giddy” when the United Autosports team briefly thought victory was possible during last month’s Daytona 24 Hours.

Alonso, who hasn’t won a race since the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix, shared a United Autosports-run car with Lando Norris and Phil Hanson at Daytona. Team boss Zak Brown described how a rain shower during the race briefly gave Alonso hope they might win.

“He got really excited in the wet right before we started having our issues,” Brown told F1 Fanatic and other media at an event last week. “Lando was putting in great times and it was clear we were very competitive and we had this moment where ‘I think we might win this thing’.”

“And he just got all giddy about it. And then we had our technical issues, unfortunately.”

Tyre and brake problems left Alonso’s car 90 laps behind at the finish. United Autosports’ other entry, driven by Bruno Senna, Paul di Resta, Will Owen and Hugo de Sadeleer, finished four laps down in fourth place.

Alonso announced his desire to compete in the race shortly after he re-signed for McLaren last year.

“He said ‘I want to do Daytona’,” Brown revealed. “I went to Luis [Garcia Abad, Alonso’s manager] and said ‘does he really want to do Daytona?’ and he said ‘yeah’.”

“[I thought] what else was he going to do in January? And he loved it, he was in the pits every single session whether he was in the car or not, all the team dinners. He was great, totally settled into the team, was great with team mates.”

“We even had in the middle of the night – he didn’t see that we all were watching him – but he started taking stickers off Lando’s tyres in the middle of the night to see if he could help scrub them in a little bit quicker. So there’s Fernando, and we’re all sitting there [saying] ‘what’s he doing?’ He’s that focused.”

Alonso will take part in all of this year’s World Endurance Championship races for Toyota alongside his F1 commitments. Brown is certain Alonso’s extra duties won’t negatively affect his racing.

“I’m knackered going with him to all the races and I’m not even driving, but he knows what he’s getting into. He’s unbelievably prepared.”

“He went from the 24 hours of Daytona and did a simulator test with Toyota for however long he was in the car. He’s back in action, so I think he’s a very special athlete who can do things that probably most of us around this table would get knackered. But I don’t think he would do it if he didn’t think he could do it at the highest level.”

Fernando Alonso considered quitting F1 at end of season
By Andrew Benson
Chief F1 writer

In the wake of three years of poor results with struggling McLaren, the Spaniard pondered switching full-time to IndyCar or endurance racing.

However, he said: "I felt it was not the time for me to step out - not after these results, not with this feeling.

"I knew I'd regret it for the rest of my life and I'd have this bad taste for the rest of my racing career."

The 36-year-old, who was talking in an interview published in the latest F1 Racing magazine, re-signed for McLaren, who have swapped their troublesome Honda engines for Renault. Alonso has also committed to the 2018-19 season with Toyota in the World Endurance Championship, including two shots at winning Le Mans.

He said: "Definitely I still want to succeed. There is unfinished business for me and McLaren together."

The Spaniard set the second fastest time in pre-season testing last week but that was after McLaren had had eight difficult days plagued with unreliability.

Alonso said that his attempt at the Indianapolis 500 last year, when he led for a number of laps and was contending for victory in the closing stages when his engine failed, had "woken up all my racing senses".

He said McLaren's lack of performance during the Honda era had made him forget the extra buzz that comes from running at the front.

"I hadn't felt it for a while but now I feel i could do a very good season if we have a good package this year because I am sure I will be able to put in the 'extra' that I have put in all my career," he said.

"That has been the most difficult thing to give to the team over the past three years: the commitment, the work, simulator feedback.

"That's something that comes naturally to a racer but to give extra when you're in Mexico and you have a power-unit penalty and starting last because of a 35-place engine penalty, things like the extra two-10ths or moves in the race - or maybe a magic start - don't come out. It's not conscious. It's just how you feel on the day."

Alonso said he was not frustrated "too much" with being stuck on two world titles since 2006, despite being regarded as one of the best drivers of his era, and three near-misses in 2007, 2010 and 2012.
