Pocinjemo najavu nove Indi sezone jednom prigodnom vescu:

Dallara has confirmed its 2012 IndyCar single-seater will be called DW12 to honour the memory of the late Dan Wheldon.

The Briton, who was killed during the IndyCar season finale at Las Vegas, had helped develop the new car from the Italian manufacturer before his fatal accident.

"As a homage to the work he (Wheldon) did, we've decided to dedicate the 2012 IndyCar Dallara to him, and from today it will be called the DW12," Gian Paolo Dallara told Autosprint magazine.

Potvrdjene su jos i trke u Sent Piterzbugru (ulicna), Barber Park (permanentna staza), Long Bic (ulicna), Sao Paolo (ulicna), Indi 500 (naravno, oval), Teksas (oval), Edmonton (aerodromska staza).

Gian Paolo Dallara admitted this week that his company has yet to have the opportunity to properly analyse the accident that took Wheldon's life as the Sam Schmidt-owned chassis he was driving when he crashed remains impounded.

"We don't yet have proper data because Wheldon's car is still confiscated," Dallara told Italian magazine Autosprint. "We know, like everyone saw on TV, that the multiple collision was started by a car that slowed down at turn entry.

"It was not a major slow down, in fact it was not very considerable: at most it was by 10 or 20% per cent.

"But at that speed of about 350 km/h, when you travel two or three abreast on the banking, even such a small speed reduction is enough to generate a multiple collision. And when wheels touch, the cars are thrown up in the air. It's fatal.

"The phenomenon of cars lifting off in wheel-to-wheel contact represents the most serious risk in single-seater races, unfortunately."

Dallara added that he did not believe the high speed of Wheldon's initial collision with another car necessarily directly contributed to the outcome - cars were averaging 220mph-plus prior to the accident, and he suggested that the outcome would have been similar below 200 mph.

"No, it wouldn't have changed a thing, unfortunately," Dallara said. "If at that time the cars had travelled even 70 or 80 km/h slower, well under 300 km/h, it wouldn't have made any difference in the dynamics.

"If two wheels that rotate in the same direction touch even at just 50 km/h, the car behind shoots up in the air. There's nothing you can do. We see that in European racing too, when there's a contact at slower speeds."

He also insisted that the new design will significantly contribute to the reduction in airborne accidents in the future.

"The entire project of the new 2012 car had already been conceived with the aim of lowering the risks of lifting off from wheel-to-wheel contact," said Dallara. "We have operated in two directions: a rear protection and a lateral one.

"At the rear we have placed two bits of bumper-like bodywork behind the driving wheels in order to stop front-wheel-to-rear-wheel-contact. But risk can come from lateral contact too, when the wheels of two single-seaters interlock with each other. This is why the bodywork of the new chassis is very different: it's wider and it extends laterally to the outer edge of the rear wheel.

"This way the wheels can't interlock anymore by the sidepods, and the lift-off effect should be prevented."

Danica Patrick says she would still like to race in the Indianapolis 500
By Diego Mejia Friday, November 4th 2011, 20:59 GMT

Danica Patrick says she still hopes to return to race at the Indianapolis 500 following her full-time move to NASCAR.

The former IndyCar racer has not completely turned her back on the series despite engaging in a very busy schedule from next year, as she runs full-time in the Nationwide Series with JR Motorsports while racing a part-time programme with Stewart Haas Racing in the Sprint Cup.

Patrick said the tragic loss of Dan Wheldon during her final IndyCar outing as a series regular will not dampen her desire to race at Indianapolis again in the future.

"Absolutely, I'd love to do Indy," Patrick said when asked about her possibly returning to the Brickyard. "In my opinion it's the greatest race in the world and I have so many feelings and emotions and memories and I still feel like I have memories to create, so no, that won't affect my decision."

This weekend at Texas Motor Speedway Patrick will run a special paint scheme on her Nationwide car in tribute to Wheldon's memory and also a helmet design sporting the British flag and Wheldon-themed colors. The helmet will be later auctioned through http://danwheldonmemorial.com/.

Although she admitted to feeling safer inside a stock car than in an IndyCar, Patrick emphasised that her decision to move to NASCAR was not influenced by safety concerns at any point.

"It does feel safer," said Patrick. "It felt safer two years ago when I first got in a Nationwide car. I'm pleased to have a roof over my head this weekend. Accidents still happen, but not a lot of serious head injuries. Having my head covered definitely adds a level of comfort."

Earlier this year when announcing her full-time switch to NASCAR, Patrick said she was 'uncertain' about running in the Indianapolis 500 next year.

Karpenterov tim uzima ozbiljnog maha:

Ed Carpenter has struck a deal with Derrick Walker to run the new IndyCar team that he has launched for the 2012 season.

Carpenter, who announced the formation of Ed Carpenter Racing last week, will use Walker's equipment, expertise and Indianapolis workshop to run his team, leaving him free to concentrate on his role of owner/driver.

Walker has a huge amount of experience in Champ Car and IndyCar, having run entries for Roger Penske before setting up his own team in 1990.

"We feel very strong about Derrick's capabilities and what he can bring to the team," Carpenter said. "I'm sure there will be challenges, and I'll probably be doing more work than I've done outside the car, but it's exciting. I'll definitely set my alarm clock earlier."

He ran the Team Australia Champ Car squad that launched the careers of Will Power and Simon Pagenaud, although he has not fielded an IndyCar since 2008. His team has enjoyed success this year running the Falken Porsches in the ALMS.

Kentucky race winner Carpenter has bought two Dallara DW12 chassis for the team, which will be backed by Fuzzy's Vodka. An engine supplier is yet to be announced.

Andreti testira omladince:

Indy Lights race winner James Davison will test an IndyCar for Andretti Autosport at Palm Beach international Raceway on Thursday.

The Australian, who is the cousin of V8 Supercar drivers Will and Alex Davison, will drive the car raced by Mike Conway this year. Gustavo Yacaman, who won at Baltimore on his way to fourth in this year's Indy Lights series, will also sample the car on the same day.

I'm really excited to have my first IZOD IndyCar Series test with Andretti Autosport at Palm Beach," Davison said. "I have worked very hard for an opportunity like this and I fully intend to maximise it."

Davison picked up one win on his way to second place in the 2009 Indy Lights points, adding to the victory he picked up during his rookie season a year earlier. He has also raced in Champ Car Atlantic and, more recently, Grand-Am.

INDYCAR: Series Trying To Solve 2012 Car’s Speedway Issues
Will Phillips, IndyCar's VP of Technology tells SPEED.com, “The car isn’t going as fast as we wanted or expected and we’re trying to identify why."
Robin Miller | Posted November 10, 2011

It was way too cold to do any running Thursday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway but Tony Kanaan still spent a few hours driving the new Indy car at the world’s most famous race track.

Of course TK was at the Dallara factory in Italy on the IndyCar simulator – trying to help the longtime manufacturer work out some problems with the DW12 chassis.

The immediate concern is the disappointing performance of the Dallara at the Speedway last week, where Dario Franchitti and Kanaan tested for two days.

And, while the top speeds were only between 208-216 mph for either the Honda or Chevy-powered drivers, it was more a product of the car’s handling than a question of power.

“The focus of concern is with weight distribution,” said Will Phillips, vice president of technology for the IZOD IndyCar Series and the midwife of the first new car in a decade for this series.

“The car is too good on entry and suffers understeer on [corner] exit and it’s the same complaint from Dario and Tony that Dan [Wheldon] gave us after the first test.

“So the car isn’t going as fast as we wanted or expected and we’re trying to identify why the theoretical world doesn’t match real world at the race track. At very high speeds, we have disparity in the data.”

Although Franchitti and Kanaan politely requested not to be asked any questions at the moment, prior to his fatal accident at Las Vegas Wheldon had admitted the car was wicked loose entering Turn 1 at Indy and pushing badly exiting.

Trying to find ways to lighten up the DW12, its engines or gearboxes and transfer some of the weight forward are the current objectives.

“We need to increase the feel on the front end of the car,” said Phillips, a respected race engineer in open wheel and sports cars before joining INDYCAR last winter.

“The short ovals and road courses haven’t been the problem. After the first manufacturers test at Mid-Ohio, we were damn sure the new car would be quicker next year and Dan had a good test at Iowa.

“The concern is the high-speed oval.”

Phillips praised all fronts on trying to do whatever it takes ASAP, since the new cars are set to be delivered in less than six weeks.

“The positive thing is that everybody is pulling together and nobody is pointing fingers,” he continued. “The engine manufacturers are looking at ways to help, Xtrac is re-tooling some pattern work to get [its gearbox] lighter and Dallara is making extra bits for next week’s test.

“Dallara also invited the engine manufacturers to send drivers over and use the IndyCar Simulator at no cost. The good thing is that they can change the weight distribution on the simulator to verify what happened here last week.”

The weather won’t allow for any more IMS tests this year but INDYCAR plans to stage its own at Fontana and Homestead after the current changes and brainstorming are completed.

“It’s a new car and a new engine and not without its challenges,” said Phillips. “But we’ll get things squared away.”

Ostala dva proizvodjaca uveliko testiraju vec dobrih mesec dana...
