Confirmed: Roger Lee Hayden In For De Puniet, Espargaro Heading To US
Submitted by David Emmett on Mon, 2010-07-19 09:21.
motomatters.com

The search for a replacement MotoGP rider, which seemed so difficult for Valentino Rossi and Hiroshi Aoyama, has not been so complicated for Randy de Puniet's replacement, it seems. Last night, we reported on rumors that Roger Lee Hayden was to replace the Frenchman on the LCR Honda at Laguna Seca, and this morning, it appears that the news has been confirmed. The extremely well-connected Italian site GPOne.com is reporting that the the youngest of the three Hayden brothers has been confirmed as De Puniet's replacement for the Red Bull US GP in Monterey.

Hayden was an obvious choice to replace De Puniet at Laguna, as he had several key factors working in his favor. Firstly, he has experience on a MotoGP bike, although that experience is from 2007, when he rode a wildcard Kawasaki at Laguna, finishing 10th on his first time on the bike. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, Roger Lee knows Laguna Seca like the back of his hand, having ridden it in the AMA for so many years. This is a crucial factor in selecting the American, as any former 250 or current Moto2 riders drafted in are unlikely ever to have seen the track, as the junior classes have never accompanied MotoGP to California since the series returned there in 2005, for reasons of cost.

Thirdly, the youngest Hayden has a good relationship with American Honda, having raced Supersport bikes for the brand in the AMA. Hayden is also booked in to ride an American Honda-backed Moriwaki Moto2 bike as a wildcard at Indianapolis. With American Honda having formally withdrawn from the AMA since the DMG took over running the series, having an American rider on a Honda at the US rounds of the MotoGP series is extremely important to Honda's US distributor.

It is unlikely - though not impossible - that Hayden will continue to replace De Puniet after Laguna Seca. The Frenchman, who broke both his tibia and fibula, was scheduled to have surgery on Sunday evening, to have a pin inserted in the leg, in an operation very similar to that which fixed Valentino Rossi's fractured leg. De Puniet was slightly more lucky than Rossi, as the Frenchman did not suffer a compound fracture, the bone not breaking the skin and risking infection. De Puniet now has 28 days to recover before the next round of MotoGP at Brno, which could see the Frenchman fit enough to race again.

The other rider injured in the three-bike pile up in the first part of the race at the Sachsenring was Aleix Espargaro. The Pramac Ducati rider was taken to a local hospital, where a CAT scan revealed he had a fractured C7 vertebra, and also looked to be ruled out of the Laguna Seca race. But closer examination revealed that the injury could be an old one, rather than a new fracture, giving hope that the Spaniard may be able to ride after all.

According to the leading Spanish website Motoworld.es, Espargaro's medical results have been sent to Dr Angel Villamor, a leading trauma specialist in Spain. Dr Villamor will examine them in Spain, while Espargaro flies to the US with the team. If the fracture is determined to be an old one, then Espargaro will be given the all clear to race at Laguna Seca, and if not, the Spaniard will sit out the race. If Espargaro is ruled out of the US GP, the team have already decided they will not replace the Spaniard.

Karel Abraham To Ride 6th Ducati In MotoGP In 2011
Submitted by David Emmett on Thu, 2010-07-29 15:25.
motomatters.com

MotoGP's silly season is in full swing, and it has been Ducati who have been dominating the media over the past couple of months. First, by seeing the man who won their only championship, Casey Stoner, head off to Honda to join his former mentor Livio Suppo. And more recently, by the will-he-won't-he saga of Valentino Rossi's imminent arrival to take Stoner's place at the Bologna factory.

But out of the spotlight, the factory has being expanding its involvement even further. Yesterday, Karel Abraham announced on his website that he will be riding a Desmosedici GP11 in MotoGP next season. The 20 year-old Czech is currently riding for the Cardion AB Moto2 team, and has seen a marked improvement in his fortunes since the team switched from the RSV chassis to the FTR.

Encouraged by his progress, and the strong times that Abraham posted when he tested a Ducati MotoGP bike earlier this year at the Mugello circuit (Abraham posted a 1'51.0 matching that of Nicky Hayden and around half a second or more faster than the other satellite riders, according to Motorkari.cz), the Cardion AB team has decided to move up to MotoGP next season, leasing a 6th Ducati Desmosedici and expanding the grid to 18. The usual objection - money - is less of a factor in the case of Abraham, as his father - also named Karel - is the owner of a large medical equipment company specializing in cardiological and neurological equipment, Cardion. Abraham Senior also owns the Brno circuit, home of the Czech MotoGP and World Superbike rounds.

With Ducati stepping up its involvement to six machines next season, pressure is sure to increase on Suzuki. The Hamamatsu factory has faced criticism from all sides about their refusal to field more than two bikes, Suzuki putting that refusal down to a question of cost. But Yamaha could also faced press to expand their own presence, as if Ducati - a vastly smaller factory - can field six bikes, then the question of why Yamaha can only support four machines is also likely to be raised. The Cardion AB bike will bring Ducati level with Honda for the number of bikes each factory has on the grid.

US MotoGP Shakeup: Back-To-Back Rounds Could See All Classes At Laguna And Indy
Submitted by David Emmett on Mon, 2010-08-02 13:36.
motomatters.com

Ever since its return to America, MotoGP in the USA has been something of an anomaly. When the series first headed back across the Atlantic in 2005, it was only the MotoGP class that made the trip to Laguna Seca, with cost and limited paddock space cited as reasons for leaving the (then) 250 and 125 classes back in Europe. When the Red Bull US GP in Laguna was joined by the Red Bull Indianapolis GP at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway facility in 2008, the two support classes joined the MotoGP riders in the US, but only at Indy. Furthermore, the two US rounds have also always been separated by at least one European race, forcing the teams to fly their bikes and equipment out to the US twice.

It looks like a more sensible approach may be developing, however. According to reports in both the eminent publication GPWeek and in Motorcycle News, the 2011 calendar could be altered to accommodate all three classes at both US rounds. Motorcycle racing's eminence grise Michael Scott reports that Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta spoke to Spanish reporters at Laguna Seca about bringing Moto2 and 125 to the Californian circuit. To make this possible - a move that West Coast racing fans would warmly welcome - the two US rounds would have to be rescheduled, and both races run one after another. Having the two US rounds together would allow the MotoGP teams to cut transport costs significantly, while offering Moto2 and 125 teams an extra race at comparatively little extra cost.

The question remains whether Laguna Seca and Indy would be raced on consecutive weekends or with a free weekend between the two. From the standpoint of costs, consecutive weekends would be preferable, as the teams could travel directly from one race to the next. The only question mark would be over transporting the bikes and equipment from Northern California to the Midwest, with just two days to make the trip of 2,300 miles - or nearly 3,700 kilometers - from the west coast to Indy by road, a cheaper option than using air freight to ship the equipment from west to east.

A bigger question mark hangs over the plan, however. 2010 is the final year of the three-year contract which Dorna has with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and as yet, no news has emerged concerning Indy's intentions to continue the agreement. Although officials involved in the event have been extremely complimentary about the event, there is still no sign of a deal being finalized to extend the Indy GP. If the event at Indianapolis - or Laguna Seca, which has come under pressure from wealthy locals complaining about the noise from the circuit - is dropped from the MotoGP schedule, then the plan to host both classes at Laguna could be called off.

Ducati CEO Confirms MotoGP's Worst-Kept Secret: Rossi And Hayden At Ducati For 2011
Submitted by David Emmett on Wed, 2010-08-04 10:01.

It is hard to pin down at exactly what stage a rumor stops being a rumor and becomes news, a fact demonstrated by Valentino Rossi's impending move to the Ducati MotoGP team. The very first rumors emerged around the weekend of Mugello, the story broken by veteran Italian journalist Paolo Scalera of the Corriere dello Sport. By the time the MotoGP paddock arrived at Assen, the paddock was positively buzzing with rumors, and at Barcelona, speculation switched from whether Rossi would switch to Ducati to when he would announce it. At the German Grand Prix in the Sachsenring, Rossi cleared up that detail as well: any announcement on his future, he told the pre-event press conference, would have to wait until Brno.

Unfortunately for the nine-time World Champion, his thunder has been stolen by his new boss. In an interview with Bruno dePrato for US magazine Cycle World -ostensibly about the new Ducati Mega Monster, and the factory's new V-twin they will be contesting the World Superbike series with - Ducati CEO Gabriele del Torchio let slip that they have already fixed their rider lineup for 2011 in MotoGP. "This season will not bring to Ducati any crown in the sport," Del Torchio said of 2010, "but I look forward to Valentino Rossi teaming up with Nicky Hayden."

Finally, we have confirmation of Rossi's move - and Hayden's re-signing - from an official source at Ducati. There had been plenty of off-the-record comments and remarks - every journalist in the paddock seemed to have a source confirming Rossi's arrival, and such stories were swapped enthusiastically, the names always changed to protect sources - and so Rossi's impending switch to Ducati had already moved far beyond being a mere rumor. The fans and the media had been left hanging in limbo, awaiting an announcement enforced by factory politics - Rossi's move was reportedly pushed back to Brno by Yamaha, who wanted Rossi riding in Yamaha colors at the US GP at Laguna Seca, an event Yamaha is heavily involved in with sponsorship - yet one which had been signed around the time of the Catalunya GP in Barcelona, according to Asphalt & Rubber.

Now, though, the cat is out of the bag, and as expected, Valentino Rossi will line up alongside Nicky Hayden at Ducati in 2011. Rossi will still hold his press conference at Brno - Hayden may wait until the Red Bull Indianapolis GP two weeks' later to make an announcement - but the announcement will no longer be news. Instead, Rossi will still face a barrage of questions from the assembled media - on how big a risk the move is, on whether he believes he can turn the Yamaha around, on whether he feels he has been chased out of Yamaha by Jorge Lorenzo, and a million other details - but speculation will now focus on whether Rossi will be bringing his pit crew - the group of people who have surrounded him since he entered MotoGP in the year 2000 - with him to Ducati. Long-time racing veteran and paddock insider Dennis Noyes believes he will, but crew chief Jerry Burgess has refused to comment, saying that he will make his own decision towards the end of the season.

With Rossi now "officially unofficially" signed, and Casey Stoner already confirmed with Honda for 2011, that leaves only two of MotoGP's Fantastic Four unsigned. Dani Pedrosa had been widely expected to announce he had renewed his contract with Honda after the Red Bull US GP at Laguna Seca, but after crashing out in the race, the Spaniard was disinclined to make a formal statement. Jorge Lorenzo, meanwhile, is almost certain to sign up with Yamaha again, where he will be paired with current Monster Tech 3 Yamaha rider Ben Spies. Although Lorenzo has been coy on his future, there is no reason for the Spaniard to leave, and with the possibility of Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica - or their mobile network subsidiary Movistar - stepping in to replace the departing Fiat (who Rossi will also be taking with him to Ducati), there are plenty of financial and marketing incentives to stay.
