Sainz takes Dakar lead on day two
By Matt Beer Sunday, January 4th 2009, 14:48 GMT

Carlos Sainz has taken the Dakar Rally lead for Volkswagen after winning the second stage of the event.

Opening day leader Nassar Al-Attiyah (X-Raid BMW) had remained ahead through the first checkpoint in the Santa Rosa to Puerto Madryn stage, only to lose six minutes when he went off course in a particularly sandy section and struggled to find the stage route again - eventually having to double back to ensure he crossed the second checkpoint.

Sainz, who had already been slightly faster than Al-Attiyah in the first part of the stage, proceeded to take the fastest time and move into the overall lead, although he also had difficulty in the sand.

"It was very difficult with the dust and the motorbikes," said Sainz. "There were places where you basically had to stop. In one of these places I found a motorbike, and I hope it's okay."

The former World Rally champion now has a 2:19 lead over his VW teammate Giniel de Villiers in second place. Like Al-Attiyah, the South Africa had trouble staying on the rally route in the deep sand.

"The beginning was very fast, but in the middle there was an off piste section where it was not so easy with the navigation," said de Villiers.

"We lost about a minute or two but it was not too bad. Towards the end it was very, very dusty. We tried to be safe and not get stuck in anything."

Defending winner Stephane Peterhansel has now moved up to third for Mitsubishi, ahead of the delayed Al-Attiyah, after taking the second-fastest time in today's stage.
Stage two times:

Pos Driver Car Time
1. Carlos Sainz VW 1h56:14
2. Stephane Peterhansel Mitsubishi + 1:14
3. Giniel de Villiers VW + 1:56
4. Joan Roma Mitsubishi + 2:48
5. Luc Alphand Mitsubishi + 3:54
6. Krzysztof Holowczyc Nissan + 5:46

8. Orlando Terranova BMW + 6:20
9. Nassar Al-Attiyah BMW + 6:32
10. Robby Gordon Hummer + 9:24

Overall positions after stage two:

Pos Driver Car Time
1. Carlos Sainz VW 4h34:46
2. Giniel de Villiers VW + 2:19
3. Stephane Peterhansel Mitsubishi + 3:51

Al-Attiyah fastest again on day three
By Matt Beer Monday, January 5th 2009, 17:51 GMT

Nassar Al-Attiyah took his second stage win of the 2009 Dakar Rally on day three, but a puncture meant he was unable to significantly reduce Carlos Sainz's overall lead.

X-Raid BMW driver Al-Attiyah had led the event after the opening stage, only to drop back when he went off-course on Sunday and struggled to find the correct route afterwards.

He looked set to make up for that today, when he reached the second checkpoint of the 551-kilometre Puerto Madryn to Jacobacci stage 2:45 faster than the rest of the field, but a puncture then cost him a lot of time in the final section.

Although Al-Attiyah still managed to win the stage, his margin over second-fastest man Sainz was eventually just 35 seconds, which means that the VW driver is now 3:40 ahead of Al-Attiyah in the overall standings.

"In the last 50 kilometres there was one bike that jumped in front of us and we hit some rocks and had to change the tyres," said Al-Attiyah, who still moved up from fourth to second on the leaderboard.

"I think it's cost us about two minutes, but really this was a very good run - no problems in all the 550 kilometres except the puncture. It's good we are here (at the finish) and the car is working very well. I think we did a good job today.

"We're taking care of the car because it's a long rally, but I think one day we must really push a lot to make good times. But at the moment it's good going and we'll see what happens."

Sainz's teammate Giniel de Villiers has dropped from second to third after a cautious run through today's stage.

It was a bad day for the usually-dominant Mitsubishi team, with 2006 Dakar victor Luc Alphand stopping for nearly half an hour in the stage with an apparent mechanical problem, and 2007 winner Stephane Peterhansel losing time to Al-Attiyah throughout the stage and finishing five and a half minutes off the pace. He is now fourth overall, ahead of teammate Joan Roma and VW's Mark Miller.

Dieter Depping was third quickest in today's stage, but is over an hour behind the leaders in the overall times having suffered costly electrical problems on Saturday.
Stage three times:

Pos Driver Car Time
1. Nassar Al-Attiyah BMW 4h29.27
2. Carlos Sainz VW + 35
3. Dieter Depping VW + 1:40
4. Giniel de Villiers VW + 4:01
5. Stephane Peterhansel Mitsubishi + 5:31
6. Mark Miller VW + 8:00
7. Orlando Terranova BMW + 9:04
8. Joan Roma Mitsubishi + 9:15
9. Guerlain Chicherit BMW + 11:48
10. Robby Gordon Hummer + 13:35

Overall positions:

Pos Driver Car Time
1. Carlos Sainz VW 9h04:48
2. Nassar Al-Attiyah BMW + 3:40
3. Giniel de Villiers VW + 5:45
4. Stephane Peterhansel Mitsubishi + 8:47
5. Joan Roma Mitsubishi + 14:22
6. Mark Miller VW + 15:45
7. Orlando Terranova BMW + 17:41
8. Krzysztof Holowczyc Nissan + 34:25
9. Robby Gordon Hummer + 34:32
10. Luc Alphand Mitsubishi + 38:47

Sainz takes second Dakar stage win
By Pablo Elizalde Tuesday, January 6th 2009, 16:59 GMT

Carlos Sainz has taken his second stage victory of the 2009 Dakar to consolidate himself in the lead of the event after four days.

The Spaniard, however, was followed closely by his main rival so far, Nasser Al-Attiyah, who finished just six seconds behind the former world rally champion.

Sainz, winner of the second stage last Sunday with his Volkswagen Touareg, completed today's 459-km special from Jacobacci to Neuquen in 3h:42.57, just six seconds ahead of BMW driver Al-Attiyah.

The Spaniard and the Qatari have won two stages each so far, and the Volkswagen drivers is three minutes and 46 seconds ahead in the overall standings.

Sainz could have won by a bigger margin, but he was slowed down by a slow puncture late in the stage.

"We began going pretty fast, and then we reached Nasser and he realised we were behind and start to attack a lot and we continued both at the very good pace," said Sainz at the end of the day.

"Then I overtook him outside the track but I started to lose pressure in one of the tyres and I had to stop to inflate it because it was a slow puncture.

"It kept losing pressure until the end of the stage and I think I was left with just half a kilo of pressure and we won by five or six seconds. It's a shame."

Al-Attiyah, meanwhile, admitted he was not disappointed to lose out to Sainz in today's stage.

"Tomorrow he will start in front of us, and with the dunes it is much better for me," the Qatari added.

Mitsubishi's Luc Alphand took third place today, over a minute behind Sainz, with Mark Miller in fourth in a Volkswagen and Joan Roma in fifth in the second Mitsubishi.

Volkswagen's Giniel de Villiers kept third place in the standings despite crossing the finish line in sixth today.

Reigning champion Stephane Peterhansel finished down in eighth and lost nearly seven minutes to Sainz.

Stage 4 results:

Poginuo francuski motociklista

The organisers of the Dakar Rally have revealed that French motorcyclist Pascal Terry has been found dead in Argentina.

Terry had gone missing during the second stage of the rally on Sunday, between the Argentine cities of Santa Rosa and Puerto Madryn.

The 49-year-old’s body was discovered in an area of deep vegetation, said organisers, according to the Associated Press. He was approximately 50 feet from his motorcycle and without his helmet, with food and water beside him.

Police in the region of the South American country are investigating Terry’s death.

Meanwhile, the latest reports on British driver Paul Green and his navigator Matthew Harrison say that the pair remain in serious condition in a Santa Rosa hospital.

The two competitors – from the Rally Raid UK team – suffered an accident during the opening stage of the race, on Saturday.

"Green is suffering from a blow to the thorax and spine, he has been detained since January 3 with artificial breathing apparatus," Reuters quoted the head of the hospital’s intensive care unit, Juan Jose San Emerito, as telling the Telam news agency.

"We are trying to remove him from the breathing apparatus. His situation is serious but with a favourable outlook, although with this type of injury can only be judged by what happens over several days as complications can occur.

"[Harrison's condition] is serious and the situation has not changed."

De Villiers wins as Al-Attiyah leads
By Pablo Elizalde Wednesday, January 7th 2009, 19:27 GMT

Giniel de Villiers scored his first stage win of the 2009 Dakar rally to move into second position in the overall standings after five days of the event.

In the longest special of the rally so far, the South African mastered the sand dunes to reach the finish line in first place with a time of 5h47:43.

The 506-km special from Neuquen to San Rafael proved to be the trickiest of the rally so far, and both Carlos Sainz and Nasser Al-Attiyah lost valuable time.

Sainz, who had led the rally until today, lost over 15 minutes after making a driving mistake and tearing off his front hood following a problem with his steering.

The Spaniard has dropped to third position in the overall standings, while BMW rival Al-Attiyah has moved into the lead, with de Villiers in second, just two minutes and 24 seconds adrift.

"I had to do 200 kms without power steering and the car was very hard to drive over the dunes," said Sainz. "And then in one of them we flipped the car."

Qatari Al-Attiyah also hit trouble after his engine began overheating.

"We stopped twice because the engine was overheating," said the new leader. "The temperature was very, very high and so we had to stop and clean everything."

De Villiers' teammate Dieter Depping was second in the stage, ahead of American Robby Gordon in the Hummer.

Stephane Peterhansel was the quickest Mitsubishi today, finishing in fifth positioon.

WTCC champion Yvan Muller, competing in a single-seater SMG buggy, was forced out of the event after his car caught fire following a collision with the truck of Portuguese driver Elisabete Jacinto. None of them were injured.

Takuma Aoki koga smo pominjali takodje.

Sixth Dakar shortened drastically
By Pablo Elizalde Thursday, January 8th 2009, 11:30 GMT

The sixth stage of the Dakar Rally has been shortened drastically, organisers announced on Thursday.

The timed stage from San Rafael to Mendoza was originally scheduled to be 395 km long. However, organisers have found an impassable river ford and they have been forced to shorten the special to just 178 km.

Instead of starting at 6:35, the stage will thus start two hours later.

Dakar organisers also said that yesterday's stage had been neutralized, meaning a total of 385 competitors have been authorized to start today's special.
