Gabor Saghmeister : «The top 10. And why not ?»

This is what is known as having ambition. Gabor Saghmeister is making his Dakar debut this year. He’s aiming for nothing less than “the top 10”. And “why not?”, and he is surprised when asked if he isn’t placing the bar quite high for a first attempt. The Serb has “trained hard” to give his ambitions what they’ll need. And, today he is ready “to take on any kind of weather condition”.

Gabor, who has “more than 100 trophies”, won essentially in races in Serbia, is a “fast, fast, fast, fast,” rider whose principle asset is his “enormous willpower”.

He will be closely watched during the rally. Firstly, by his wife, who is “worried but supports him tremendously”. And especially by the media from his country, where, while he “still isn’t Novak Djokovic », he has acquired a little bit of notoriety. That is why the country’s national network, RTF, will follow his adventure and will give him his own daily feature, in the evening following each stage.

And when he returns home, Gabor will no doubt plan a huge party, because “everyone will ask him to”.

Bozo Ristic : « 7 000 kilometres in China with a broken bike»

Bozo Ristic has dreamed about participating in the Dakar for two years. Last year, he was too late in sending in his entry form. This year, finally, he’s in. And for Bozo, who will be one of two Serbs in the rally, there is no question of acting the clown. His physical training was meticulous. « Throughout the entire year, I rode my motorbike twice a week for four hours; I jogged and went to the gym everyday. At least I am physically ready”, he says with a smile.

Aboard his bike that he believes is “very competitive”, the Serb esteems he has “the science and sufficient capabilities to go al the way”. To do this, he has defined the principal axis of his strategy: “ride at 70, 80% of my potential, no more.” Besides the desert portions, the Belgrade native doesn’t “know much about what he’s in for. I think there will be everything…” Only the atmosphere in the bivouac will seem familiar to him thanks to numerous tales from friends who are Dakar regulars.

He got into motorbike riding “little by little” but has ridden extensively in Asia. He managed to cross China, where he rode 7000 kilometres with a broken bike, including “a leaking fuel tank that spilled petrol just under the rear wheel…” But the Serb was always lucky. No accidents, not a broken bone until now and there’s no reason that should change in South America.

Najveća novost na Dakaru, naravno pored izmeštanja na drugu kontinent, je dizel Mitsubishi. Posle sedam uzastopnih pobeda Pajero odlazi u istoriju...stiže Racing Lancer.

V6 dizel sa četiri turbo punjača je jači od benzinca, veći obrtni momenat i automobil ima nešto duži osovinskim razmak od predhodnika.

Kao i svake godine pojavljuje se nekoliko interesantnih imena iz auto-moto sporta među vozačima.
Od bivših F1 pilota tu su Ukyo Katayama koji će voziti Toyotu i Čileanac Elio Salazar(jedan od dvadeset ljudi koji je vozio F1, Le Mans i Indy, a sada prvi i Dakar) u McRae Enduro car.


U Bowleru je Tom Coronel WTCC-a, a u ekipi Isuzu nekada vrhunski vozač moto trka u najjačoj klasi Takuma Aoki. Aoki je posle jednog incidenta na testiranjima za Hondu ostao nepokretan i od tada vozi reli.

VW expect straight fight with Mitsubishi

VW Motorsport boss Kris Nissen thinks only his team and the works Mitsubishi squad will have the speed and consistency to challenge for victory in the Dakar Rally, which gets underway on Saturday.

Mitsubishi are seeking an eighth consecutive win in the event, but Volkswagen are mounting a major bid to end their rival's run of success and become the first diesel-fuelled Dakar victors.

"The only one trophy we have missing is the Dakar trophy with the number one on it," said Nissen.

"We are a couple of tenths of a second faster per kilometre after we've done a lot of work on the turbo. Our target is to clearly win this rally; the first to do as such with diesel technology."

Nissen believes NASCAR driver Robby Gordon could match VW and Mitsubishi's pace in his Hummer H3, but anticipates a straight fight between the two leading manufacturer teams.

"Our main rival will be the rally as well as the other teams," he said. "There is a total outsider in the shape of Robby Gordon; very fast and very quick on some days but I think it'll be VW versus Mitsubishi."

VW driver Giniel de Villiers was half an hour clear of the field in 2006 before mechanical problems dropped him to second, and believes this year's event will also be decided by consistency rather than pace.

"It's going to be the guy who makes the least mistakes and has the least problems," he said.

The latest VW Touareg is the least powerful of the works cars, but has undergone significant aerodynamic development in the wind tunnel and using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). It also features new rear suspension to reduce roll, and a flatter bonnet to improve visibility in the sand dunes.

The car is fitted with an air conditioning system that adds weight and slightly reduces power, but also brings the cockpit temperature down from approximately 60 degrees to 50 - a improvement welcomed by the drivers.
