Nadal Clinches Year-End No. 1 For First Time

Spaniard Rafael Nadal is guaranteed to finish this season as the No. 1 player in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, ending Roger Federer's four-year reign.

After Federer’s semifinal loss to Andy Murray in the Mutua Madrilena Masters Madrid semifinals on Saturday, Nadal is guaranteed to claim the No. 1 year-end position. The 22-year-old Mallorca native is the first left-hander to finish No. 1 since John McEnroe in 1984 and the third lefty in the 36-year history of the ATP Rankings. McEnroe was No. 1 from 1981-84 and Jimmy Connors finished No. 1 from 1974-78.

Nadal is the 15th different year-end No. 1 and the first Spaniard to finish the season as the top player in the world. Prior to this season Nadal finished No. 2 the past three years. Nadal took over No. 1 on August 18 after ranking No. 2 for a record 160 consecutive weeks (since July 25, 2005). Federer held the top position for a record 237 straight weeks from Feb. 2, 2004 to Aug. 17, 2008.

Nadal said: "To become No. 1 during the year was one of my goals and it is important to have achieved it. Moreover, if you finish the year as No. 1 it is even more special. I am also very happy to bring something more to Spanish sport, something for Spanish history and for our great tennis tradition."

Nadal leads the ATP circuit with eight titles and an 80-10 match record in 2008. In July, he became the first man since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to win the Roland Garros and Wimbledon double after dethroning five-time champion Federer in a five-set epic at the All England Club. Nadal followed by clinching his 12th career ATP Masters Series title, and third of the season, at the Rogers Cup in Toronto. He won 32 consecutive matches before falling to World No. 3 Novak Djokovic in the Cincinnati semifinals. He also won a gold medal in singles at the Beijing Olympics.

Nadal is one of four players to have so far qualified for the circuit-ending Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai, beginning November 9. Federer, Djokovic and Murray are the other qualifiers. Four singles berths remain up for grabs with just over two weeks of the regular ATP season to play

O jucerasnjem porazu:

"I have fought until the end, I have given everything that I could give and I go home after a good match and I will see the mistakes that I have committed... I didn't play well on the backhand and he was playing with unbelievable confidence...Simon was putting all the balls inside the lines. It was disappointing not to win, it's tough to lose a match like this after a big fight. I tried my best, I'm happy with myself for that."

GAME, SET AND CATCH: RAFAEL NADAL GOES FISHING

By SIMON KINNERSLEY

‘’Da li placem’’, on odgovori namrgodjeno.

Dok peca, upecati ribu i nije najvaznije.

U sustini postoje dva Rafaela.

Spavam u istoj sobi, majka me jos uvek kritikuje ako je nered u njoj, sestra me jos uvek zadirkuje.’’

Oni imaju svoj posao a ja svoj.’’

‘’Osvojio sam Mercedes u Stutgartu ali sam ga ostavio u garazi. Vise volim jednostavna kola.’’, on kaze.

‘’Shoping i kupovina me na zanimaju.

Ljudi tiho i normalno zive svoje zivote.

‘’Ona studira ekonomiju u Palmi.

Njegova rodbina takodje voli anonimnost u malom gradu.

Contractor , jako lepo si to rekao, posebno poslednja recenica.

To be happy you must be austere
JUAN JOSÉ MATEO 02/08/2008

When Toni Nadal was a child living in a boarding school in La Palma, the headmaster, a friend of his parents, would tell him that he would have to learn how to conjugate the verb aguantarse (to endure, to put up with). Toni learned his lesson well, playing tennis by day and taking History and Law classes at night, following a path of unending studies that turned him into the man who is now, the steely-eyed coach of Rafael Nadal, four-time French Open Champion and the current King of Wimbledon.

“And that’s something people are not willing to do today” , says the coach. “Endure. Everybody complains. Today people are less willing to sacrifice. This is what I have tried to teach Rafael. I tell him: 'Even if things go well for you, even if you have money and success, you will have to deal with suffering, because some things will always be out of your control. A family member will die. Your girlfriend will leave you. But you must have the fortitude to endure.' This is an attitude that has to be taught, just like having drive (motivation) in tennis. It is essential to being happy and a better person”.

Behind Rafa Nadal - who last night beat the Ecuadorian Nicolas Lapentti in the quarter finals of the Cincinnati Masters Series – and all of the silent rituals designed to manage time during a match and choose the best path to victory is Toni Nadal and his Spartan vision of life. Within the coach, however, also beats the heart of a man who is interested in the History of Rome and World War II; scandalized reflections about Speer and Von Ribbentrop in Nazi Germany and an appreciation for art. Each tournament, each trip he takes guiding the career of the number two player, is an opportunity for Uncle Toni, as he's called by English speakers. He visits the MOMA in New York and the Louvre in Paris; and he always comes back to his beloved impressionist painters in the Musée d’Orsay. Even there, while he loses himself in the paintings of Cezanne, perhaps before stopping in front of Renoir's Le Bal au Moulin de la Galette that he admires, Uncle Toni still conveys his philosophy on life, which is to always demand the most of yourself, a philosophy that he has transmitted to his nephew ever since he was a little boy convinced that his Uncle Toni had the power to make it rain or to make him invisible. Rafa, the lefty who had to choose between fishing, football and tennis, was exempt from the museums; but not from the rest. He was born with the body of an athlete. He learned and continues to learn strokes from a maestro. And yesterday, today and always he's maintained a relativistic life philosophy and a permanent dissatisfaction, transformed into a desire to improve, which is the indelible mark made on him from a life spent in the company of his coach.

“I wasn’t strict with him just because I thought it would improve his chances to be successful”; argues his uncle, who has three children. “Maradona, Romario, Ronaldinho and various tennis players … they were not self-disciplined. I’m not so foolish that I think that this attitude is the reason that Rafa is at the top of the game, but I like it as a life philosophy. This is a game. To consider yourself important because you play tennis is as stupid as thinking that you are important because you’re good at playing hide and seek".

Rafael refused to stay in a luxurious hotel in one of his first trips to Australia. He was given a list of the errors that he had committed just after winning his first Grand Slam. And he learned how to eat like an athlete after he lost a match due to a stomach ache caused by eating too many croissants covered with Nutella. Behind each of these movements shaping the person and the athlete, was always Uncle Toni, his complicit gestures, his genuine affection and his audible silences. Rafael never broke a tennis racket. Although, his uncle observes, he has broken several Play Station controllers.

“I liked that Rafa was austere”, explains the coach. “We spend a lot of time together and I’ve always been strict with him. He had no choice but to adapt to my way of seeing life. As far back as the Greek philosophers the question of where happiness comes from has been debated, if it came from work or pleasure. The Stoics or the Hedonists", observes Toni, always pleasant. "I believe that happiness comes primarily from work and discipline. It’s what I would want from my children. I try to guide them along that path. This does not mean that I act like a dictator; but in this society it seems as if discipline is looked down upon. And discipline, like respect, is necessary".
