The term “diaspora” has historically referred to Jews living outside of Israel, but has now come to be used to describe all peoples who are dispersed from their ancestral homeland. Stephen Marc’s work has focused on the African Diaspora, and this exhibition focuses on the struggle to seek freedom amidst bondage and inhumane, violent conditions. In this ocean scene at Cape May Point, New Jersey, the harsh and heartbreaking images of an enslaved woman being whipped from an 1850 autobiography by Henry Bibb and a Harper’s Monthly rendering of a slave march are contrasted with the long lines of a modern woman’s back, as she strides confidently toward the sea. Her back is mottled by an overlay of braided hair, intended to mimic the keloid scars (known as ‘stripes’) from whipping.
