Briatore backs Piquet
''He is a part of the team and we need him'' 29/05/08 09:21

Team boss Flavio Briatore has strongly backed Nelson Piquet amid rising speculation about the struggling rookie's dubious future at Renault.

"Nelsinho definitely has talent," the Italian is quoted as saying this week by sportnet, after yet another disappointing race for 22-year-old at Monaco last Sunday.

Rumours suggest that the Brazilian, whose despair was captured by photographers after he slid out of the prestigious race, has been handed a three race deadline to up his game, as laid-off Super Aguri line-up Anthony Davidson and Takuma Sato wait in the wings.

Briatore added: "He is a part of the team and we need him. I have no doubts about that."

Briatore's comments come after his fellow Renault chief Pat Symonds insisted this week that Piquet, the son of his namesake and former triple world champion, is only lacking confidence following a disastrous opening third to his F1 career.

Engineering boss Symonds compares Piquet's performances so far in 2008 with his predecessor Heikki Kovalainen, who managed to turn around his fortunes at about the same time last year.

"At this time last year a lot of people were thinking Heikki was entering his last few races," the Briton stated on Renault's podcast this week.

"With a driver or a sportsman it's about self esteem, and believing in yourself.

"All Nelson needs to do is to turn that corner and believe in himself and it will happen again," Symonds added.

evo malo zanimljivosti

Translated Q&A with Ghosn:

Ghosn: ''Leaving the sport as losers ? Never. And in any case we will remain in Formula 1 for many years.''

Q: How come the results are not good ?
Ghosn: ''We will only see the result of the work we've done to come back during the second half of the season. It's clear that I'm not happy with the results.''
Q: But there's the risk of Alonso leaving Renault in a situation like this...
Ghosn: ''Fernando is very important, he has given motivation to the team, he's a fighter and an honest person. It's up to us to supply him with a good car. I'm confident he'll stay with us.''

Q: Some say he has signed a precontract with Ferrari for 2010, or with others for 2009 already...
Ghosn: ''No 'marriage' withstands if results stay out. Everyone in the team knows we have to work harder.''

Q: Renault spend quite a bit less money on F1 compared to Ferrari and McLaren, right ?
Ghosn: ''We like the FIA's politics of willing to cut the costs, but it's not true that we spend less than the others, otherwise we wouldn't have been worldchampion twice in the past three years.
''

Q: Another 'danger' is that of Briatore calling it a day at the end of the year...
Ghosn: ''Flavio loves Formula 1 and he's a person I have faith in. He'll be with us for as long as he wants. And I hope he'll stay with us for a long time.''

-----------

a sada malo o nedjelji...

Renault had an awful race on Sunday, but the the drivers weren't really able to get up to speed in the days previous either. Out of fear for a lack of traction all the ballast of the R28 was shifted to the rear on Thursday. That was a bit overdone. The traction was okay but difficult understeer didn't make for easier driving, Piquet: ''I couldn't get around any corner.'' So ballast was moved to the front again. On Saturday things were going better but already the next problem arose. The car wasn't handling well in the damp conditions, Symonds: We didn't get the intermediates to work, and we were forced to drive with the extreme weather tyres that weren't suited for those conditions.''

In qualifying Piquet missed the cut of going to Q2. He lacked confidence in the super soft tyres. At a later stage in qualifying Alonso struggled with the same thing, Symonds: ''We've taken too little out of the soft tyres. P7 on the grid is Alonso's merit.''

Piquet: ''In my first qualifying attempt I was three tenths slower than Fernando. That's exactly the difference between staying where you are or getting through. Last year Heikki lost a second to Fisichella in the first part of qualifying. That goes to show that Monaco isn't an easy track for rookies.''

The uncertainty with regard to the tyrechoice was also the reason why Piquet was the only one that was sent out on track with the extreme weather tyres. Alonso tried to tackle the race with intermediates but equally changed to extreme wets during his pitstop. For about ten laps having those tyres was an advantage. That's why the Spaniard had to get past Heidfeld as quickly as possible, which explains his rushed overtaking tactics at the Lowes hairpin, Alonso: ''In that phase I had to extract the advantage of having extreme wets on my car.''

The attempt failed and because Renault no longer had anything to loose Symonds decided to gamble: ''Our only choice was to be the first to go out on dry tyres. We actually wanted to use Piquet as a guinea pig but then were in doubts because of his lack of experience. Then Alonso came on the radio saying he was willing to try it. Looking back it was five laps too early for the experiment.''

Symonds sees a ray of light after all: ''In the little number of laps Alonso did on a free track, his laptimes were comparable to what we've showed in Spain and Turkey. In terms of sheer speed we're still the number four of the field.''

eto znali su da imaju problema s trakcijom i svjesno su se upustili u kemijanje da bi popravili taj nedostatak...
no kada problem ne riješiš kako spada onda rješenje izazove
problem negdje drugdje...

preostaje nam čekati novi zadnji ovjes koji su najavili za Silverstone...

ako poboljšanja budu na nivou onih iz Barcelone eto Renaulta uz BMW

Alonso backs Piquet to recover

Saturday, 07 June 2008 11:51

Fernando Alonso has backed his struggling rookie team-mate Nelson Piquet to turn his season around.

Piquet has yet to score a point in his first year of Formula 1, has regularly struggled in qualifying, and has made several errors in races.

Last year at McLaren, Alonso faced a huge challenge from Lewis Hamilton - then an F1 newcomer - but the former champion has been comfortably faster than Piquet so far at Renault.

However Alonso says he rates Piquet highly, and is confident the young Brazilian will improve his form.

"I think we can support him as much as we can as these things can change very quickly from one race to another if you have a good result," said Alonso.

"I have been with Nelson now for a couple of months and I have a huge respect for him and I know that he has a great talent."

Alonso believes a lack of F1 mileage at some of the circuits in the early part of the season had exacerbated Piquet's difficulties.

"Some races have been difficult because they have been new tracks for him," said the Spaniard.

"Barcelona was one of the tracks he knew and he showed his potential there."

He reckons that Piquet's initial struggles will be forgotten by the end of the year.

"I am pretty sure that he will have had a good season at the end of the championship when we look back," Alonso said.

Paddock speculation has suggested unemployed ex-Super Aguri pair Takuma Sato and Anthony Davidson, and Renault's GP2 protege Romain Grosjean as potential replacements for Piquet, but Alonso thinks Renault will stick by its rookie.

"It has been a difficult start but we need him and he will get there," he said.

Dino Toso odlazi iz Renaulta

Renault announced the departure of Director of Aerodynamic Technology Dino Toso from the team today. Toso has spent the last eight years with the Vichy based team working in the aerodynamics department.

After delivering a revised aerodynamic package for Barcelona, which should help see the R28 make gains, Toso is now seeking new challenges in motorsport.

"I would like to thank Flavio Briatore and Bob Bell for their professional and personal support throughout my time with the Renault F1 Team, during which we have enjoyed great success together".

Toso joined Renault in 2000 after working for Jordan Grand prix. While at Jordan he played a part in Damon Hill's 1998 win at Spa working as Hill's race engineer.

At the end of 2003 Renault's chief aerodynamicist John Iley departed to join Ferrari and Toso was promoted to the role. Not long afterwards he was diagnosed with cancer but he continued to work while undergoing treatment and in 2005 and 2006 the team won both the Drivers' and the Constructors' titles.

Renault made no mention of Toso's health in the press release announcing his departure. Toso's responsibilities for leading the Aerodynamics department have been taken over by Dirk de Beer.

Briatore to take on new Renault role
By Michele Lostia and Jonathan Noble Thursday, October 2nd 2008, 09:32 GMT

Renault boss Flavio Briatore is to take on a revised role within the French car manufacturer next year, with him planning to appoint a team director to help oversee day-to-day running at the outfit.

Briatore's current contract with Renault runs out at the end of this year, and he has so far refused to commit himself to a new deal until the future direction of both the team and Formula One had been settled.

However, Briatore has told Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport that he will definitely stay on board, although in a new position.

"In 2009 I won't have a 360-degree role anymore," said Briatore, who is set to meet with Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn in Paris today to discuss the future.

"There will be a director, who I've already spotted, to take care of day-by-day management. That way I'll be able to concentrate on the most important things."

Briatore is optimistic that the team, which took their first win of the season in Singapore last weekend, are now back in a position to return to the form that helped them to back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006.

"There are cycles in F1," he said. "Just when the times were difficult, Carlos Ghosn didn't want to lower the budget. F1 isn't just a matter of money; otherwise Toyota would win every race.

"In Renault we had to refresh the whole aerodynamics department. When you change 40 people you need to wait for them to amalgamate. Now we are in line, and we're ready to start over. We have the right people, young and capable."

Renault's hopes of keeping Fernando Alonso on board for next year have been boosted by the Singapore victory, but Briatore still thinks more work is needed to convince the Spaniard. A final decision from Alonso may not come until after the season has finished.

"The victory hasn't changed a thing," said Briatore. "Fernando hasn't offered himself to anyone and I think he's happy to stay, but we will meet about it when the championship ends. What can we offer him? An innovative car and a reshuffle that plays in our hands."

And Briatore has done little to quell speculation that the team are looking to replace Nelson Piquet next year, with Lucas di Grassi believed to be favourite to step up from his testing driving role.

"Piquet hasn't had a good championship so far," said Briatore. "He does good things before qualifying, and then he doesn't go the way he should. We'll see..."
