Revealed: The winners and losers under Liberty’s 2021 F1 prize money plan
2018 F1 season
11th April 2018, 10:21
Dieter Rencken / Keith Collantine

Ferrari and Mercedes will receive a much smaller share of F1’s prize money from 2021 under new plans for how the near-$1 billion fund will be shared out.

Formula One Management’s commercial rights holder Liberty Media presented its proposed changes to teams in Bahrain. RaceFans has learned from sources how it intends to cut top teams’ payments and hand more money to F1’s smaller outfits such as Williams and Force India.

Ferrari’s unique Long Standing Team payment, which by itself is worth more than some teams’ entire prize revenues, will be scrapped. The payment, worth $68 million last year, will be replaced by a $40 million payment which must be taken as company profits, RaceFans understands.

The Constructors’ Championship Bonuses and other special payments to teams will not continue under Liberty’s plan. Instead the prize fund will be more closely linked to where each team finishes in the constructors’ championship.

The fund will continue to be split equally into two columns, the first of which will be shared equally between the teams, as before. The second will distribute payments based on their constructors’ championship finishing positions. While the payment to the first-placed team will fall from 19% to 14%, the last-placed team will continue to receive 6%, and the incremental gaps between them are evenly spaced.

Comparison: How F1 prize money will be shared under the 2021 arrangement

Based on the details of Liberty Media’s F1 prize money plan for 2021, RaceFans has modelled how much money each team could receive under the new structure.

For ease of comparison we have used the 2017 constructors’ championship finishing positions for each team and assumed a total prize fund of $1 billion. All figures are $m.

Teams’ prize money: Current structure

2017 c’ship	Column 1	Column 2	LST	CCB	Other	Total
Ferrari 2nd 35.5 56.7 68	35 195.2
Mercedes	1st 35.5 67.4 39	35	176.8
Red Bull	3rd 35.5 46.1 39	35	155.5
McLaren 9th 35.5 17.7 30 83.2
Williams	5th 35.5 35.5 10	80.9
Force India	4th 35.5 39.0 74.4
Toro Rosso	7th 35.5 24.8 60.3
Renault 6th 35.5 31.9 67.4
Sauber 10th 35.5 14.2 49.6
Haas 8th 35.5 21.3 56.7
Total 1000
Teams’ prize money: 2021 proposal
		2017 c’ship	Column 1	Column 2	Total
Mercedes	1st 50 70 120
Ferrari 2nd 50 65.5 115.5
Red Bull	3rd 50 61 111
Force India	4th 50 56.5 106.5
Williams	5th 50 52 102
Renault 6th 50 48 98
Toro Rosso	7th 50 43.5 93.5
Haas 8th 50 39 89
McLaren 9th 50 34.5 84.5
Sauber 10th 50 30 80
Total 1000
The new prize money structure will result in a flatter distribution of income across the teams. It will also mean the amount of money they receive more closely reflects their ranking in the constructors’ championship.

Ferrari and Mercedes stand to lose the most. While Red Bull will also see a substantial reduction in their payment, its owners will recoup some of this through the increased payment to its sister outfit Toro Rosso.

NB. Under the 2021 prize money structure Ferrari would receive an additional $40m which must be written to group profits. Each engine manufacturer would also receive an additional $10m. These are not reflected in the tables above.

F1 TV gets a launch date

Formula 1’s most anticipated streaming service, the F1 TV will go live by the Spanish Grand Prix. The service will go through a small beta test round during the current Chinese grand prix and the upcoming Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

The new service is Liberty Media’s first step in making the sport available throughout the world via a digital platform. It is also expected to increase the commercial revenue of the sport over time.

The new over the top (OTT) subscription video platform is being produced in partnership with NBC Playmaker, iStreamPlanet, CSG, Ostmodern and Tata Teleservices.

There are two levels of access available in the new service. The premium tier, F1 TV Pro will give users access to all 20 driver-cameras and additional feeds. Users also have the option of customising the views and can decide how and when they want to watch the races. The service covers press conferences and pre- and post-race interviews, all the practice sessions, qualifying and races. There are plans to add Formula 2 Championship, GP3 Series and Porsche Supercup later in the season.

The initial launch will be for the desktop site which will be followed by apps for Apple, Android and Amazon Fire mobile and tablet devices. Access via Amazon Fire TV, Android TV and Apple TV are expected to be covered by summer.

Apart from the F1 TV Pro there will an inexpensive non-live subscription tier called F1 TV Access which will provide live race timing data and radio broadcasts along with extended highlights of each session. Users also get access to a massive historic archive owned by the F1. The service will be available in almost all countries.

NBC Sports’ Playmaker Media and iStreamPlanet will be the system integrators and video streaming partners. CSG will handle identity management, payment processing and business analysis. The web and app design and development will be done by Ostmodern.

Tata Communications will take care of the CDN and connectivity services for both the services.

The new services are expected to bring the fans closer to F1 racing, no matter where they are located. Developing apps for the smartphone will help F1 improve its market penetration among the younger crowd.

Ferrari chairman and CEO Sergio Marchionne has repeated the team’s threat to quit Formula One despite Liberty Media offering the manufacturer concessions in its proposal for how the sport will be run from 2021.

RaceFans revealed earlier this week Ferrari stands to lose its unique Long Standing Team payment, worth $68 million last year, under the proposed restructuring of how F1 distributes its prize money. It will be replaced by a $40 million payment which Ferrari must write down to group profits.

No other team will receive a similar payment. Engine manufacturers, of which Ferrari is one, will each receive an additional $10 million payment under the plan.

“If there are any proposals that distort F1, I think Ferrari will pull out… we are working with Liberty Media to find acceptable solutions,” said Marchionne according to Agence France-Presse.

“We had a proposal from Liberty 10 days ago, we expect to know the details and then we will make choices in the interest of Ferrari,” he added. “We could look for alternative solutions, it’s not a threat, but it does not mean we stop shopping.” Marchionne said the team had “limited interest” in Formula E.

The technical changes to the sport proposed by Liberty include removing the MGU-H from power units to simplify them and reduce costs.

Speaking in the FIA press conference in Shanghai yesterday Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene referred questions on Liberty’s proposal for 2021 to Marchionne. However on the question of whether the $150 million budget cap proposed by Liberty would be acceptable he said “we are discussing and we will see in the future if it’s achievable or not.”

The Formula 1 Strategy Group and the Formula 1 Commission met at the FIA headquarters in Paris today to discuss the future engine regulations for F1.

The decision was taken to increase the fuel allowance for each race from 105 to 110 kg, so that the engines can be run at full power at all time. Other matters that were discussed was to have rules to separate the weight of the car from that of the driver. Drivers will also be required to wear biometric gloves in order to help the medical rescue teams.

There will be further discussions about aerodynamics with the goal being to reach some conclusions by the end of the month once research programmes are completed. The decision will be based on whether or not it is felt that aeroydnamic changes are needed to facilitate overtaking.

The Strategy Group was presented with the FIA's proposals for the 2021 power unit regulations, which the federation wants to have 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid engines (similar to the existing units) but without the MGU-H exhaust energy recovery systems.

Radoje, ne zaJebaJi.

Ni ti ne bi voleo da Ferdža ode. To bi bio F1 life before and after Ferrari.

Easy, moja konstatacija nema nikakvu implikaciju.

A few weeks ago the Formula One group announced that it is working with Netflix to create a 10-episode documentary series, which will be released in 2019. This will aim to tell the behind-the-scenes story of how Liberty Media gets on as it tries to reposition Formula 1 from being a motorsport company into becoming a "media and entertainment brand". The show claims that it will focus on "the intense fight for the heart, soul, and direction for the future of this multibillion-dollar business." That sounds rather sensationalist, but there is no doubt that there is currently a fair amount of action going on in boardrooms, as well as on the track as the sport discusses new engine rules, new commercial arrangements, and a budget cap of $150 million for 2012. Netflix says that its crews will be granted "unparalleled and exclusive access" to the paddock, teams, drivers, and other key players including Formula One's management. It is an interesting idea.

The series will be produced for Netflix by a London-based independent film company called Box to Box Films, which was founded in 2016 by Paul Martin and James Gay Rees. The last-named was one of the producers responsible for the acclaimed Senna (2011) and the Academy Award-winning Amy, the story of singer Amy Winehouse (2015). He has also been involved in similar sports documentaries about soccer players Maradona and Ronaldo and about the Palio horse race in Siena, Italy.

The series will be overseen by Sophie Todd. Her past credits include Mutiny (2015) recreating the voyage led by Captain William Bligh following the famous mutiny on the Bounty, and various other documentary projects such as Britain's Secret Seas and Wild About Your Garden.

Netflix hopes that the soap opera of Formula 1 will attract a lot of viewers, as it continues its fight for subscribers with rival Amazon, which boasts The Grand Tour, a successful big budget car series, presented by the former presenters of BBC's Top Gear. This is now filming its third season. Amazon last year made a documentary series called "Grand Prix Driver" which focussed on McLaren's difficult pre-season in 2017.

Netflix is soon to debut a show about drag racing, called Fastest Car.

Netflix currently boasts 125 million subscribers around the world, primarily in the United States. The company began producing its own original content in 2011 and enjoyed success with House of Cards. It is aiming to be making half of its programmes by next year and is investing an impressive $8 billion this year to create new content.

Amazon Prime membership has now reached 100 million. This service is rather grander that simple content streaming as it is primarily an online shopping service selling a huge number of products in addition to its video streaming.

Nema sanse.

F1 teams could lose ‘mission control’ rooms in new plan to improve races
2021 F1 season

20th April 2018, 15:25
Dieter Rencken / Keith Collantine

‘Mission control’-style virtual garages used by F1 teams could be scrapped in 2021 under plans to cut costs and make racing less predictable.

RaceFans understands new restrictions are being considered which would prevent teams having large numbers of engineers working remotely on their cars from their factories during race weekends.

Virtual garages, also called ‘operations centres’ by some teams, have become increasingly popular because of the staffing restrictions teams face at tracks during race weekends. The number of staff they can have working on their cars is limited and a curfew is enforced on their working hours.

F1’s commercial rights holder Liberty Media believes the virtual garages makes staffing restrictions at race weekends pointless. It wants to get rid of them to reduce teams’ costs, improve the quality of racing and increase the importance of drivers over engineers.

Among the purposes of the virtual garages is to allow teams to study their race strategy options in great detail in real-time during races. This allows them to quickly decide between different tactical options and respond immediately to changes in the race, such as the deployment of the Safety Car.

Liberty Media presented its proposals for wide-ranging changes to Formula One in Bahrain last week including a redistribution of prize money and changes to the sport’s governance plus sporting and technical regulations.
