ROMA vs UDINESE PREVIEWS

Soccernet

ROME, September 10 (Serie A) - Roma coach Luciano Spalletti will face former club Udinese for the first time when the Friuli outfit visit the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.

Spalletti disappointed the Udinese fans in the summer when he decided to leave and take the reins of Roma but the club has not missed a beat without him, making it through the qualifying matches to reach the Champions League group stages and then winning their opening game in Serie A.

Udinese beat Empoli with star striker Vincenzo Iaquinta scoring the only goal of the game in that Italian league opener.

In Rome, the Spalletti era has also begun in promising fashion with an opening day 3-0 road win at Reggina.

Coach Serse Cosmi, Spalletti's successor at Udinese, has a lot of respect for Sunday's opponents and his predecessor but he is keen to turn the spotlight on his own side's encouraging start to the season.

"We all know that on Sunday we will face a difficult showdown,'' he said.

"But it will be the same case for Roma. I don't think our rivals will be smiling (when it's over).

"It's true that Roma have had a good start but so have we, with the difference that we have won three consecutive official games and they have only won one.''

Udinese have earned praise for their ability to overcome Spalletti's departure, especially with their defeat of Sporting Lisbon over two legs to qualify for Europe's elite club competition for the first time in their history.

Cosmi graciously saluted Spalletti for putting the team in position to reach the top tournament on the continent.

Spalletti is trying to bring the good times back to Roma, who endured a nightmare one year ago.

There were four coaching changes last season, and numerous punishments for indiscipline by the players and fans.

Even as they have enjoyed a winning start to the 2005-06 campaign, Roma are having to deal with the unsettled Antonio Cassano.

He was a distraction at Roma last year because of petulant behaviour on the field and now his reluctance to sign a contract extension has kept him in the news.

Other clubs in Serie A, including AC Milan, want to take him about from the capital.

Cassano played no part in the opening game, and despite collecting the three points, Spalletti found himself being criticised by Juve coach Fabio Capello, the former Roma boss, for leaving the talented player on the bench.

It remains to be seen if Spalletti, who said earlier this week that Cassano has a place in his team, will give him his chance this weekend.

The hosts will be without French defender Philippe Mexes, who is struggling with a muscle injury.

The good news for Spalletti is that Argentinian defender Leandro Cufre has recovered from ankle injury and will be available to play in his place.

Spalletti will not have to contend with one of his key players last season as Udinese midfielder Giampiero Pinzi will be out of action.

Cosmi will look for Iaquinta to provide the answers in attack.

Channel 4

The Week 2 encounter between Roma and Udinese at the Stadio Olimpico promises to be an exhilarating match. New capital boss Luciano Spalletti faces the team he led to Champions League qualification last term, which included a thumping 3-0 win in this fixture last term. And the man who has replaced him on the Friuli outfit’s bench is charismatic Roma fan Serse Cosmi.

The Giallorossi are expected to name an unchanged starting XI from the 3-0 win over Reggina, which means that Antonio Cassano will again have to contend with a place on the sidelines. Vincenzo Montella is likely to hold off competition from Shabani Nonda to retain the solitary striking berth, despite the former Monaco striker netting on his debut. Philippe Mexes and Olivier Dacourt are both unavailable through injury.

The visitors are set to make just one change to their side, bringing in Stefano Mauri to replace new boy Jose Luis Vidigal. Cosmi is also expected to keep faith with Antonio Di Natale ahead of David Di Michele for a second week running. The Bianconeri ran out 1-0 winners in their opening fixture against Empoli.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roma (probable): Curci; Panucci, Kuffour, Chivu, Cufre; De Rossi, Perrotta; Mancini, Totti, Taddei; Montella

Udinese (probable): De Sanctis; Bertotto, Natali, Felipe; D Zenoni, Obodo, Muntari, Mauri, Candela; Iaquinta, Di Natale

Goal

Background

Last term Roma coach Luciano Spalletti was leading Udinesse to a historic Champion’s League birth. In one of this week’s premier match-ups his old squad comes calling to Roma’s historic Stadio Olimpico, led by new skipper and avowed Roma fan, Serse Cosmi. This is a key fixture for a pair of squads both harboring hopes of challenging again for a Champion’s League spot, and is a big test of just how much the Giallorossi have put last season behind them.

Many had thought that Udinesse would falter a bit this season after losing the likes of David Pizarro and Marek Jankulovski during the signing period, however after looking impressive in the CL draws so far, the bianconerri come in to Roma looking to prove that they are still in the drivers seat for the fourth spot in the CL.

Roma looked strong in their first outing of the season, drubbing Reggina 3-0 despite the circus surrounding the Cassano situation and the enigmatic stars’ being frozen out of the lineup. However this week poses much more of a test for the capital squad with one of their main contenders coming into town.

Team News

Roma
News from the Roma camp seems to be that Antonio Cassano appears to be close to extending his deal with Roma, which could see him back in the line-up, but if a deal isn’t done before match-day the Roma boss is likely to freeze him out of the line up once more.

Udinese
David Di Michele, one of last season’s stars for the bianconerri, looks set to miss the lineup a second strait week, with Antonio Di Natale taking his place in the line-up. Stefano Mauri also looks set to see his first league action of the term, replacing new boy Jose Luis Vidigal

Watch Out For

Roma
Francesco Totti looks to be a key to the Roma attack. With Cassano’s creativity looking set for the bench once more, unless a deal gets done prior to game time, Totti is going to have to really play big in order to spark the Roma attack. ‘Il Capitano’ played well in the Azzurri’s mid-week drubbing of Belarus, and looks to carry that form over into this match.

Udinese
Vincenzo Iaquinta needs to show up and cause trouble for the Roma back four if Udinesse are to prevail here. Empoli held the Udinesse attack to a lone goal last week, and the same isn’t likely to prove enough to come out of the Stadio Olimpico triumphant.

Probable Formations

Roma (probable):
Curci; Panucci, Kuffour, Chivu, Cufre; De Rossi, Perrotta; Mancini, Totti, Taddei; Montella

Udinese (probable):
De Sanctis; Bertotto, Natali, Felipe; D Zenoni, Obodo, Muntari, Mauri, Candela; Iaquinta, Di Natale

Prediction

Roma have an additional motivation, looking to avenge their 3-0 loss to Udinesse in this tie last term, and with their ship looking to have righted itself so far this season, look for a tough but close Roma triumph, 2-1.

Ovacije Cassanu, a zvizdali mu do pre nedelju dana. Sada mora pasti gol.
